Yeah, it doesn't smell like rotting flesh, a very pungant skunk scent, but it is sweet and I think it's wonderful to me because of the texture. It's nature's custard!! I love custard! I love the durian!
I am one of the only kids in my class who loves durian. Personally, I like the taste and texture. My parents were born in Indonesia and I grew accustomed to the flavor and the smell. My parents buy the fruit and open it themselves. In Indonesia, people put it in cake, and I really mean cake with frosting and that stuff. Different people have different tastes. Enjoy diversity :)
I personally haven't ever had durian, but I'm guessing vegetarians and vegans from the WEST (which I am included in) might be more inclined to have taste buds that reject it (especially since you said it you even liked the smell!) due to our diets largely lacking in things of that texture and consistency, and also it's very high in fat, another thing that vegetarians (not all of course) tend to cut largely out of their diets. So it may have just had qualities you weren't used to.
But I was so excited to try it! I was looking at it from Bourdain's view that it's amazing. It even smelled good to me. I tried. And I still respect this epic fruit.
what? i love the smell and durian is good if you pick the right ones..they taste sweet and kinda creamy..really good :) maybe it's just because i'm asian and i'm so use to it ..idk ;)
Hey seriously, eating raw is better trust me. If you think my post is wrong, then i will tell you something. I am a Singaporean. And we Singaporeans worship durians. We love them!!!

from the way it looks. that one is not the best one. a good durian shouldn't be that 'fleshy'...

I think everyone is brainwashed by Andrew Zimmern into thinking Durians are gross. It's all in the mind

Wonder if eating a miraclefruit berry will help with the taste?
bmwsux4 3 years ago
Take some dark french raost coffee and mash it into vicks medicated ointment and them put it under you upper lip and that may help.
I have tried durian, and once you get past them smell; its actually not that bad.
bmwsux4 3 years ago
Yeah I thought they taste like shit to...Like rotten sweet garlic.
deviltron1 3 years ago
yea...they shouldn't be bitter...is it firm or soft? It's better if it's soft, but if it's bitter than it might be too ripe lol.
I love them <3
If you hate the smell maybe try freezing the parts first and then eat it? It'll taste like durian ice cream =D!
QingTien 3 years ago
Bitter is actually better
