On this song Marvins voice sounds similar to Jermaine Jackson. When Marvin died Jermaine went into Berry Gordys office and begged him to let him portray Marvin if Motowns movie division made a movie about Marvin Gaye.
I loved your commentary as well as the song itself. The instrumental track is the same as The Marvelettes' version (which was common back in the day with Motown). This slow grinder is timeless. Great post, MotownMaster!!!
Are you smoking crack? I went and heard that version and those guys can't even play their instruments and the lead singer can't keep up with the rhythm of the song, plus he sounds like he just finished sniffing spray paint.
This was my exclusive party ender during the summer of 1965. The A-side (How Sweet It Is..) was alright, but in my part of Detroit, Forever was the Slow-drag party ender. It was replaced later with Gladys Knight (and the Pips) Its Time To Go Now.
I remember this song being on the B side of the 45my parents had" and it was the only version we heard in our area. I love this song so much and I have been looking for it everywhere and can't find it. Thank you so much for sharing it and please don't remove it. I can't hear it anywhere but here!
Never heard this before (long before my time), but I love it. Love how he's pleading with this woman. Very tender and so innocent. Don't get songs like this nowadays.
Coming from Cleveland in the 60's we were familiar with both versions of "Forever" and there was no conflict. the Marvelettes version was the benchmark and Marvin's recording was the "singers style" version. The best one to slow dance to with the girls was Marvin's version. Also, the northcoast fraternity of DJ's (Cleveland , Chicago, and Detroit) were always flipping 45's for strong vocal covers.
thanks for the insightful intro. it makes it a lot more interesting to those of us interested in the history of all those songs we listened to as kids. I respectfully disagree with the comment made that this was the version favored at dances of the time. The Marvelettes version was the only one I knew of. At least in Los Angeles this I believe was true.
This is one of my favorite songs my Marvin. His version was more popular at the dances than the Marvellettes' version. I bought the 45 when it came out and still have it. What great memories. Thanks for posting.
Wasn't that the flips side of "Can I Get A Witness"? That was '62-'63. I was living in Compton at the time. Shortly after, the Watts riots broke out..... trip....
Thanks for posting this amazing version of this song. I have never heard this version before. One of my favorite Marvellettes tunes. Marvin must have been young with that high voice.
I totally agree with your descriptions of each singer's version (Marvin's innocence and Wanda's hunger) ... however I think it was Gladys Horton who was lead on Forever by the Marvelettes.
This file has become corrupt, also you need adjust you speed on your phonograph. You are so right this is a great song as well as, "Now That you've won me" Please repost I'd love to have these. be watching
I was in the 12th grade in 1965 and this song was on the B side of one of his hits. I have been looking for this song for years and nobody knows that it ever existed. This has always been my favorite piece from Marvin and As Bob Hope always said, "Thanks for the memories".
24 years ago today, God called the greatest artistic soul home. RIP Marvin, Everybody should take off today and tomorrow (his 69th b-day)...and go on a Marvin Gaye Binge!
Thanks so much, I had forgotten about this version. It sounds so magnificent until I feel like crying. So very beautiful, and touching to hear Marvin's sweet melodic voice. Forever, Marvin, Forever!
Oh yes, this one is by far one of his best to me. It's incredible. Although it sounds different than the mp3 I have... The tempo is a little faster on this one. Hmm... Thanks for posting!
It's very funny to hear that the backround singers were loosed at this days and so the Supremes do the backround at ''How sweet it is to be loved by you''
even as a musical "purist", i have to say this version was well rendered by marvin. it didn't really stray away from the original version. thanks for posting!
