Bad science. Subjective. How are the different types of human influence or ecosystem damage weighted together to form this map? To me it just looks like a bunch of data slapped onto a sphere with scary looking red bits to evoke an emotion in the viewer. I could do the same thing with farmland, and show the "extent of human damage to land", and colour farms with a scary red, the same farmland that allows your children to eat food and live. There, I can evoke emotions too, but it isn't science.

Science works in the opposite way to law. In law you're innocent until proven guilty. In science you have to present your results clearly and comprehensively as a precursur to those results being understood and believed. Otherwise they aren't published, even if they do have underlying merit. One of the key features of science is communication. New Scientist, in this case is at fault. They either have shown a faulty paper, or have not presented the pertinent results.

We are all good at pointing out the problem and how stupid our fellow humans are. That's the easy part. Of course finding and applying solutions is the hard part. one hand, who's population do you want to control? it's been my experience that people who talk like that are usually talking about some one else's population some where else. and the somewhere else is usually from and area that uses far less resources per capita than the area from whence the population control coment came.
