Enslavement happens by corporations, by technological 'progress' which is another word of leaving as much waste as humanly possible. Industrial control, never.
Don't invent or use things you can't recycle.
And there lies the dominance of nature: return it to me so we can all profit and live well.
Governments can be turned, legislation bettered and justice practised, but what's extinct, poisoned, damaged, will not return.
Where is the logic in people's arguments that this is "scaremongering" to get tax money...the gov't does.not.have.money. in the environment!!! there's money in oil and energy companies, NOT in saving the planet from human destruction! People profit from selling energy to cities..there's no profit in cutting back on harmful habits and cleaning up after ourselves
Andrew Solow, director of the Marine Policy Center at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, "I think a good thing it does is draw attention to the scale of human activity in the ocean in general, but it really isn't science in the sense that I as a scientist view science," says Solow.
"They multiply together numbers that are people's opinions on the impact of a particular human activity on a particular ecosystem", he says. "It's a pseudo quantification."
I aggre with you, But Unlike stuff like global warming I actually feel the effects of ocean pollution, It is Very very Very Real I go 30 meters down My Local Beach and I fill a Bag With trash!
Come on The Big Plastics Companies Have a Stake In Keeping This Down. The Govt Is on There Side Not The Oceans, I don't Think Eco Control Will Happen With This Issue Many Companies have a stake in Global warming It can make them Mega bucks and give them Mega control, With this Issue It is the opposite.
If you use false data you can make anything look bad. Damage the oceans? Give me a break. They say this stuff you automatically believe without any questioning.
Politicians desire power over you. To gain that power you must give it willingly (at first, anyway). The simple solution is to offer to save you from a "crisis" that only the government can solve. If no crisis exists then one must be invented.
Bad science. Subjective. How are the different types of human influence or ecosystem damage weighted together to form this map? To me it just looks like a bunch of data slapped onto a sphere with scary looking red bits to evoke an emotion in the viewer. I could do the same thing with farmland, and show the "extent of human damage to land", and colour farms with a scary red, the same farmland that allows your children to eat food and live. There, I can evoke emotions too, but it isn't science.
Science works in the opposite way to law. In law you're innocent until proven guilty. In science you have to present your results clearly and comprehensively as a precursur to those results being understood and believed. Otherwise they aren't published, even if they do have underlying merit. One of the key features of science is communication. New Scientist, in this case is at fault. They either have shown a faulty paper, or have not presented the pertinent results.
We are all good at pointing out the problem and how stupid our fellow humans are. That's the easy part. Of course finding and applying solutions is the hard part. Yes we are all stupid and really don't give a shit about anything that disturbs our so called life. When the roof caves in we will acknowledge that indeed things have failed catastrophically. Remember "If it is to be,it is up to me". Only about 3% of our DNA is active so we have a lot of potential. We will always need humility.
Fish is consumed as food all over the world; with other seafoods, it provides the world's prime source of high-quality protein: 1416% of the animal protein consumed world-wide; over one billion people rely on fish as their primary source of animal protein.
Fishing needs to be strictly regulated, and the long term solution is population control. Their are too many people to feed, and our population is constantly increasing. We can't wait for species to go extinct to take action. Bird flu what's taking so long? Mutate already!
one hand, who's population do you want to control? it's been my experience that people who talk like that are usually talking about some one else's population some where else. and the somewhere else is usually from and area that uses far less resources per capita than the area from whence the population control coment came.

the only way to survive extreme Ice Age Or Extreme Global Warming Is Underground manmade or in Deep Natural Stable Caves.
And There Are Probably More Undiscovered Caves Than Documented Caves

Its a shame to see the tragedy of the commons at work.
I guess its a good thing I don't like fish anyway :P

Fishing is now human damage?

Over fishing is human damage
I'm not going to argue with you over the validity of this report. As far as I'm concerned, even loose studies like this containe grains of truth.

Superman III contains grains of truth too.

So I assume you have researched the work of this Marine ecologist and refuted the evidence on which his analysis is based?
