hey Tyll as an audiophile do you think that headphones should be better today than it should be compared 10 years ago? i mean like you said a lot of headphones did not change since they were first release. unlike other gadgets such as computers were so much improve over a course of a decade

@Cptheadstomp420 Ummm spend $15 on the KSC75s. They are very similar to these. If you want real bass monsters near $50, just get JVC HA-RX700. If you want something smaller and more portable look at ljokerl's portable headphone review thread on headfi. (google ljokerl's portable headphone review).

@Cptheadstomp420 Also the bass on these is much better than most things which are under $50. What Tyll meant is that these don't compare to the likes of the $350 HD-650. Honestly, with a non hi-fi source like a smartphone you won't really notice all that much of a difference.

If you want a better upgrade of the Koss headphones I suggest the Pro DJ 100's they have un parallel sound to any 300 headphones I've ever owned and cost me less than 100, they have such crisp sound and great build quality if you buy them I can tell you in confidence you will not be disappointed and you will be able to hear things you never heard before in your music.

This are fantastic headphones, I own phones that cost 2 or 3 times as much but these just sound better to me. Huge sound from tiny headphones. Also, check out the creative aurvana live.

I bought a pair of the portapro as a result of this video. They're comfortable, they did pull on my hair once or twice though, and I keep mine very short. They aren't bad for the price, especially since I found a deal on them ($40). I've read some things about the headphones wearing down over time but c'mon. Lifetime warranty. Very happy, thanks!

@MosWaki7 Nah, Studios are better (cleaner, a bit more detail). But Porta pro sounds smoother which can be nice, plus studios has a very grainy, uneven and sometimes piercing piece of shit treble that can be very disturbing. Porta pro is undeniably impressive for the price.

I replaced my wires on the Porta Pros with some Gepco wires, the sound got even better, especially the high mids and highs. Worth experimenting with IMO.

I really love the KSC75, even though I also have the Audio Technica M50. The KSC is just so much more involving sometimes, especially because the M50 has a really shallow soundstage.

It goes to show that $15 headphones really can challenge others that are ten times their price.

I wonder if the porta pro are even better than the KSC75, even though they use the same driver.

I wonder whether the designers of the Portapro got any kind of industry awards at the time - they would have deserved one. I never quite realized the mechanism was this clever. Elements of it must have been copied dozens of times. Iconic? You bet.

Ouch, where'd you find the KSC75's for $39? I got mine for about $15. Not to say they aren't worth it at $39, but their value is much more impressive at $15.
