@BelytaRuiva what vestiments are you talking about? The public? He designed all the costumes himself. His drawings are actually quite famous, they're beautiful

Paradoxpat, it's like you read my mind! Brilliantly said! It's a tragedy that so many people in the church have used the document of Vatican II to try to turn the Catholic Church into a sorry imitation of Protestantism.
Fellini was a GENIUS. You know, catholics are the only people that make fun of their own religion. For me this is very healthy. And no one would be better than an italian for that!
@janecz it is not true that only Catholics make fun of their own religion. There are plenty of Episcopalian jokes, Lutheran jokes, Baptist jokes, etc.
The very black wit of Fellini's films, while obvious at first viewing, demand the reading of the source material for the full tragedy sticking to the other shoe to drop. This film pulls no punches in stripping the spectacle from the spectre, and focusing a burning glass at the desire for religeon. The other sword of the roman empire still rattles.
I have to say...as one into surrealism (and also baptized at birth into Catholicism) this really takes the "host". Exceptional Parody and an Unparalleled Classic. Thank you for posting this Ecclesiastical Mischief from Fellini. True Bliss... As always rendered, inherent suffering makes one laugh all that much harder. (Now where did I put my flagellation device..oh yea..that's right...it's there next to the cell phone...)
@paolusstefan, the church is much richer than this, and its accessories much grander. Will you please pray to them and ask that they sell everything and give it to the poor and sick?
The independence and autonomy and therefore the economic and political power are essential to the realization of God's plan "God has given me all power in heaven and on earth" (MT 28:18).
If the church were poor all the powerful men of the world, all the folks would do what they want and evil reign.
Will never forget waking up under a bridge in Rome with a serious hangover after some cheap rocket-brandy-fuel to find myself (with mcr george) in the middle of the film set for the film..... amazing. Found it hard to separate rome and its characters from the film. Later physically ejected from the vatican for exposing an elbow ........... I'm doomed and dammed.
I was born with Fellini Cinema ...and I can t think of any other director who still give me shivers when i watch his movies...Fellini sei il piu grande...
Géniale et gigantesque. Quelle vision ! I don't know wether to laugh uncontrollably or masturbate furiously !!!! Perhaps I should do both !!! These costumes are better than the most explicit porn.
Just to follow my last comment, I ran out of space. Nothing satanic here, only not very subtle humour but end is disturbing in a strange way.
Months ago somebody commented that the pope at the end is Pius XII and that the whole thing is a kind of spoof on the very conservative Roman nobility that did not really like the fact that their priviledges with the Vatican were removed by Vatican 2 This scene as much about Roman patricians as about the Church. I think that this must be restated.
Fellini Roma is NOT a documentary, it is an personal film about how Fellini "felt" his city trough his life. Many scenes reflect his childhood and young adult life (around WW 2) and today. i.e. around 1973.
This scene is of the past a contemporary scene like the one in the metro.
Fellini was attacked many times by the Catholic church end 50 early 60's but later it was pointless so here Fellini intentionally tried to shock the Church to bring publicity for his film. And it worked.!
That's what it is. Fellini's films reminds me very much of paintings done by Titian. I had the privilege to see the exhibit at the Boston MFA. The richness of color, it's awesome.
Remember Christians, the will of God is no Catholic, Protestant,Orthodox, Penticostal, Adventist, JW, Etc. NO DIVISION, Only Christians, holy, helping and sharing instead of buying and selling.
"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (John 17:9-21)
It is a scene from Fellini's "Roma." The film takes us through many of the impressions he had of his childhood in Rome. I take this scene as an exaggerated childhood remembering of the Catholic culture in Rome. In many ways must have seemed like a fashion show all over the street. The Church to a child: all powerful/maudlin. Also pokes fun at the Italian conservatives absolutelove and devotion to Pope Pius XII.
Fellinin is presenting a work of ART, he is trying to get the viewer to EMOTE - he wants you to hate it, love it, embrace it, reject it, or have fascination with it - clearly this is not exactly a representation of the Roman Catholic Church, it could even be showing what the RCC is not....that is the point, it is what YOU take from it, what you decide it is - he isn't criticizing really and he is definitely not praising the RCC - it is subjective ART.
Pope John Paul II - mysticaly slept in April 2005, just like Lazarus -, present Pope Benedict XVI, and "the Little Pebble" i.e. Pope Little Peter Abraham II.
Sometimes I wonder if the folksy, painfully plain ecclesiastical styles of the post-Vatican II Church are not some vague, embarassed attempt to respond to Fellini's ingenious fantasy. As for me, I would rather have a Church with color, music, and "smells and bells" that, despite its human, sometimes silly countenance, tries to reflect the incomprehensible psychedelia of the Divine, rather than one with Idaho potato bag vestments and sanctuaries that look like high-school gymnasia.
@Paradoxpat : Roma was shot in 1972 and Vatican II closed in 1965. Being chronologically obsessed, it makes it hard for me to follow your reasoning. Meanwhile, if you want such a Church, you might as attend a mass from the Society of Saint Pius X or travel to Eastern or Southern Europe lol, so you can see the continuation of a time when the genius of human kind was primarily dedicated to testify of the greatness of a supposedly almighty (through music, architecture... fashion, etc.).
@Paradoxpat but in all these fabulous get ups they would attract more attention when they are abusing the innocent little boys in their trust. Perhaps this is why they have gone under cover. The 'gymnasium look' surely projects a 'healthier' less introverted or flamboyant image. Would the psychedelia of the divine include, rather than preclude, gay love between consenting adults I wonder? Or do they fear that being seen to approve of it OUTSIDE the church would mean condoning it inside?
Even though I am not a catholic, I disagree. I have met plenty of kind and highly intelligent Catholics who comprehend and stand against what some of the "big" boy Catholics stand for. We can't judge a group of people just based on a few..otherwise, America is in deep deep trouble.
A part from the surrealist scenography I may say that it is pretty hard to understand the nuances of this and other scenes if you did not experience Rome and the Vatican. You cannot separate this scene from the movie, that's about Rome and the Vatican which is part of it. No offense for who believe in the catholic church but you develop a very cynical point of you when you live the exuberance and display of power of the Vatican everyday.
In conclusion, bravo Maestro, a great touch as usual
I love the imagery, but, it's ridiculous. Everyone wants to hop on the anti-organized religion bandwagon and mock our faith and the rituals that accompany it. Enough of this iconoclasticism, enough of the bigoted skepticism, enough of the hate towards our faith. We are a humble, pilgrim people who are searching for our God. In the name of our Holy Savior, allow us to search and worship in peace!
You know nothing about Fellini, you know nothing about his beliefs, you know nothing about this clip...please stay away and please do not blurt out stuff when you have no fuckin clue what this clip is about. He made this clip for people who are EXACTLY like you...who do not understand or SEE what is wrong...He was NEVER anti organized religion or religion. He was against people who are fake...and phony...
@janecz Catholics are the only people what?? Fellini was Italian and it DOES NOT mean catholic, and this is satire OF Church, not "making fun"

@Paradoxpat When it comes to "churches with color, music, and "smells and bells"" It's hard to compete with hindu temples.

The world wide Catholic Church is a dichotomy.
Rich, white, rightwing ,fascists... who just know that the church is a grand and glorious social club..
These "big boys" have an eternal right to play dirty in God's name.
Catholics who believe in God.. The "big boys" have a God given right to be better than them.
And to be "more worthy" and "more capable"
primoabruzzi 3 years ago
