  • Just FYI...the Genji clan that the main character belongs to is the same as the Minamoto clan that famously defeated the Taira clan in the most significant battle between samurai...the war between the two clans ended with the mass suicide of the entire Taira clan, including the Emperor.

  • this reminds me of inuyasha and the soundtracks toooooooo<3

  • @chungAE1 Most of the costumes in Inu Yasha are based on this period, even though most of the characters are from far further ahead in Japanese history...strange, I know.

  • What the heck happened to the first 3 1/2 chapters??? Man you weren't kidding when you said they left a lot of things out.

  • The clothes look so beautiful...

  • why does Genji look like a woman?

  • @r3dst4r9O That style was the height of fashion and attractiveness at the time.

  • @r3dst4r9O

    Anime-tasted

  • Oooh, the part where the pumpkin-flower-lady dies. I wonder if it's worth watching. Oh, well, I would have to finish the book first anyway.

  • 葵の上の声優さんはオスカルの声優さんと同じとは!

  • I wonder is this anime based on the Tale of Genji, the original one? Or does this anime has changed some part of it?

  • @minyoon0205 There are some very minor changes, but a lot of omissions. This movie only covers the first half of The Genji, but there are lots of pieces from the first half that aren't in it either.

  • who made this movie?

  • @IronRobeYan The director was Gisaburo Sugii, the production company was Asahi Shimbunsha. There was supposedly a re-release of this film in 2003, but I've never seen anything other than a VHS of it.

  • I was looking for this movie for a long time.

    Thank you!

  • lol genji looks like agirl im sorry. but its really funny but other then that i like it.

  • @sugercube99

It isn't meant to be funny. In Heian times that was the height of beauty. In a way Japan still has this sort of beauty ideal, at least as far as the women are concerned. Women of Genji's time preferred white, round feminine faces on men. Japanese women of today idolize the pretty boy type as well, this is especially noticable in music genres like Visual Kei. Seems some ideals either don't go away completely or they come back into vogue.

  • Anyone knows who made the music?

  • @IrisIridiscente Haruomi Hosono, of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame. He also did the soundtrack to Night on the Galactic Railroad, another anime film from this director.

  • Thank you sooo much. I luv this movie

  • The costume designs in Inu Yasha borrowed a lot from the Heian era (when this story takes place), as well as court costumes from later eras. All the characters in The Tale of Genji are from the courtier class, so it is understandable that the outfits look the same. The dresses are junihitoe, which are traditionally 12 layers.

  • at 5:43 that guy looks familiar.. perhaps Inuyasha.. im not certain. but the costume IS very familiar.. im starting to like this even though i despratly hate old animes.. its the graphic.. and quality of everything.. shapes of faces.. not my favorite. but i like this because of the kimonos and era ^^ were those 12 layer kimonos they were wearing?

  • @VKQueenVamp

Yes, they are called Junihitoe for the women and they wore 12 or more of them.

  • why i can t hear this sing

  • the dude looks more like a girl the the girl.... y is this so confusing??

  • @4teensanime

Because it is old Heian era Japan. Men were considered more beautiful when they had a fair round face, white skin, and feminine virtues. It was over a thousand years ago and a very alien culture. I suggest learning about it if you hope to appreciate Genji Monogatari.

  • Thank you so much, Motoss, for sharing this. The book is still the best experience through which to merge with Muraski in her world. But this is compelling and conveys the atmosphere of her writing very effectively.

  • He is a guy, duh: LORD genji, eror secound SON, his love for women, ect.

  • It was supposed to be empror not eror sorry

  • It is simply magical and very beautiful. Thank you!

  • どうもありがとうございました!

Seriously, this video has made me happy beyond happy. It's a very interesting portrayal of Genji and is animated very beautifully!

  • 2008 was one thousand year anniversary of genji monogatari.

  • beautiful..

  • Thank you thank you thank you! Domo arigatoooo! I really like Genji Monogatari!

  • These people took some serious artistic license. Yugao TOTALLY does not die like that, and when she DOES die it's clear that the just had sex. I dont think they could make a movie about the Shining Prince, it's freakishly long and the last like 30 chapters doesn't even have Genji in it, he dies.

  • I agree no film could even come close to the story of Genji. Seidenstecker's translation I recommend to read. Arthur Whaley's would be a mistake if you are to delve into the circumstances Genji lives in.

  • Personally I'm a fan of Royall Tyler's translation, it's done better IMO.

As far as Artistic liscence goes, I agree with you, no film could come close to the story of Genji, however, I do like this interpertation of it. Perhaps that's just because I like visuals, but basically they took the important scenes and complied them for it, and made them viewable for those unable to read the book.

  • I was basically a Seidenstecker man but my wife who knew how much time I spent re-reading the book, making notes, and my book was fallying apart-copyright date of 1982 she bought me the Tyler translation. Actually I feel, so far, that it is as good as Seidenstecker translation-well so far anyways. I cannot say how I was drawn to the Genji but it was a long time ago. I regret that I am not near a Univ to take Japanese courses. For some reason some folks think Spanish is the course to take. Sad!

  • I really loved all of the annotations and extra details in the Tyler translation, even though it made for a denser read.

  • When people see you reading the book and ask what it is do you find the words readily available? For me when I start to explain the Genji it is so far ahead of most literature That explanation has a rough time coming out of my mouth. It is so broad a story & yet intimate all the same. Murasaki truly is the Shakespeare of Jpnese Literature. I guess you would find a loss for words trying to tell someone about shakespeare. It just can't be done even in a few spoken paragraphs.

  • I can't believe I bought this book 27 years ago. It won't be too much longer & I'll be older than Genji. Sometimes people will ask me what book I'm reading & when I begin to speak I find it impossible to tell them about this book. I cannot find the words. Even the introduction needs an introduction.Tyler's book does have more explanations than Seidensteckers but S's book seems to be self-contained enough for an enjoyable read. I love them all because they are human. That's the great thing.

  • genji monogatari was written in the eleventh century.

  • My wife gave me a copy ot Tyler's book for my birthday. Of course I thought my Seidenstecker translation was best but Tyler's book is wrtten as well as Sedenstecker's however Tyler gives more information about people & customs than Seidensecker. It's a toss up on those 2. In my world a book like Genji would have half as many pages of footnotes as the story itself. I might say that in Tolkin's Return of the King half the book is footnotes, languages, all kinds of stuff that give his world belief

  • There is actually another film based on the Tale of Genji which is live action and made around the year 2000 called 1000 Years of Love...I haven't seen it but I've heard it is pretty good.

  • Thank you for sharing!!!

May I know the artist's name??

  • thanks!

  • domo arigatou gozaimasu for sharing this video with me i really like it and i have never heard about it .

  • oh my god! thank you so much for uploading this! I was trying to buy the tape, and the only place that had it was selling it for 100 dollars :< I thought I would never be able to see it.

  • ほんとにありがとございました。だいすきよ!

  • arigato gosai masu tebayoooooo!!!!

  • :O omg, I've seriously been wanting to see this for like, an eternity. Thank you SO so much for uploading. <33

Genji's super pretty~~ X33 (is that earrings I see...?? <3) Chronologically, I'm confuzzled, (starts with Yugao??), but I'll go watch the next part. :P

  • Yes, it starts with Yugao...chronologically the movie is extremely confusing and skips in time are not acknowledged very much.

  • Yugao was one of the women that Genji really loved. In Seidenstecker's translation Yugao doesn't enter the story untl the 5th Chap. As long as this animation is it doesn't even begin to delve into the mystery known as Genji. And there are NO samurai. I think that in addition to expanding the Genji to 50 videos and a narrator some justice might be given to the story ending at Genji's death. That's only @ 60% of the story.

  • Yugao's in the 4th chapter in Royall Tyler's translation. Either way wherever she turns up there's a lot of discrepency about chapter order and if Murasaki Shikibu even wrote all of them. Best not to get too upset over order, considering no one can give an exact, precise, 100% correct order.

  • I'm not upset about the order I was comparing the book to the cartoon story. Sad that there will never be a dramatization close to the story line. I like the story even though I have read some rough comments on court society especially women getting raped from time to time. That is really strange how they would put up with behavior like that. Genji, Kashiwagi, Yugiri are all guilty. Powered face, blackened teeth they must have been a real sight.

  • Haha sweet!

I remember watching this back in 7th grade while we had our Japanese Lessons. Our Japanese instructor showed this to us.

I've been looking for it everywhere! XD
