  • you suck. hard

  • You have no idea what you're talking about.

  • STOP YELLLING

  • reviewing vintage guitars...and using line6!?

  • Sure wish guys would keep their mouths shut. Used to be able to find G & Ls at Squire prices in pawn shops. Then Guitar Player Mag started a bang-for-your-buck column, and guess what the first one was about? You got it...G & Ls. Suddenly they all started to disappear before I could scrounge the money to buy any of them. Anyway, if you do want an early Strat, and you don't want to sell your house, a G & L, tho pricey, is about as close as you'll get, witout becoming homeless.

  • Coil splitter and a coil tap? Dude, they're the same thing, it's probably a coil tap and a phase inverter.

  • i use a line six. it is good

  • I have a black one of these and the paintwork is atrocious, were they known for the cracking vertical paintjob that mine seems to have?

  • I have this exact guitar. I love it, the only downfall is with so many options I sometimes get preoccupied with the tone. I love all things Fender including the G&Ls

  • G&L F-100s Rock! I bought my ffirst G&L in 1980, a natural ash with ebony board! Still got it!

  • question for anyone who currently owns a g&l f100 does anyone know where to get parts for the switches i.e. switch itself, knobs, new bridge, left guitar at a friends house and rust took over due to him not taking care of it so trying to restore. please help. looking for cheap parts not too expensive.

  • @siphilrus I can't be sure but I'd check with all parts for those old G&L switches. 1-800-327-8942 Good Luck on the refurb.

  • G&L pioneered the 'double expanding' truss rod. The knobs on the f100 were volume, treble, and bass. The splitter switch split both pickups at once. The phase switch turned both pickups on and put them out-of-phase (rather than having to moving the pickup selector to both pickups and then hit the phase switch). Many other features.

  • @jwschleusener The active version was a little different.. One mini is Preamp off/on/on with bass boost. The other mini-toggle is HB/ SingleCoil/ Single Coil w Treble boost. I had a third mini added to put the PuPs out of phase when in single-coil mode. The tone controls are true boost/cut on the active model.

  • DUDE!! I have one of these !!! Bought new in 1980, mine is sunburst and has the active electronics.

  • I got one. Somebody can give me a price? i 'd like to sell it...

    G&L F100 serie II

  • i feel like line 6 amps are kinda like elementary you know? like they have lots of cool effects and stuff, but the sound isn't pure and its own. its a lot of replications. so cool for like learning and jamming, but if your looking for your own sound, something else would be better

  • Oops, seems that i sent my message , er, to soon.. Anyway, this guitar looks & sounds very similar to LF 's Stingray & Sabre from Musicman, wich are fantastic guitar. The F100 could be an improvment of MM, logically. Anyway, what about the weight ( MM man are backbones' pain) & shape of necks( paradise, on MM). Need your advice to replace ( arggh can you replace a lover?)my so old Stingray II. Thxs.

  • @2quundar My F100 is crazy heavy - in the range of 10 lbs. It's solid mahogany with maple neck and an ebony fingerboard. But it's a back killer ;-)

  • @moucon Thanxs Moucon, sure the F100 seems to be the MM heritage : fantastic neck, fantastic microphones, over unbreakable, & .. back killer. Beautiful too ( more than a stingray or a Sabre, because more simple). well, we must admit that the 1rst & only accessorie is a stool... btw, I bought me a Jazzmaster, wich is, to my opinion, the grandma of MM & F100. Buch still waiting for a F100, for sure. & a stool.

  • This guit

  • G&L build quality is similar to Fender Custom Shop guitars, but for less money.

  • Active pups on these or passive?

  • pleeeaaase do not disgrace this instrument through a digital modeling amp!!!!!!!

  • @zaoribah Yeah. Line 6 = piece of shite!!!

  • @zaoribah I really dont like line6.... I love my Roland GA120 2x12 amp with ma Boss Ds2 pedal >:).... my neighboirs couldnt ask for a better alarmclock.

  • Fuck me, i can't explain how i feel. Leo was a GOD! This guitar is ultimate. Splitting the HUms Genious.

  • This guy doesn't know what the switches do. The red mini is a splitter and the other one is phase. The phase does nothing unless both pickups are active. This info is easily available with a search.

  • hey whats better- g&l or fender tele??

  • honestly, i think they are the same exact thing, different company, different popularity.

  • ok, i kinda looked g&l up.. i guess it stands for gary and leo? its a company leo fender started after fender. idk why

  • george and leo, Leo fender wanted to make some new quality products. Fender didnt' want to spend the cash so Leo started his own thing.

  • @dryice129 it's george and leo

    george fullerton was his partner.

  • G&L blows fender out of the water no comparison. no doubt about it.

  • @TheMikev21 absolutely!!!!!!

  • Could you give us your opinion about G&L sc3 guitars, please.

  • how about trying a DECENT AMPLIFIER??? but seriously orgasmal guitar :OOOOOOOO i want a G&L!!! :)

  • why does he always play through a Line6??

  • I wish they would get someone better to play these guitars in better amps.

  • ... omg are you actually playing that through a line6? -_-

  • @sonofkikkoman boo-fucking-hoo

  • @sonofkikkoman I know right............

  • Guitar tone:

    G & L > Fender

Try a G & L out for yourself - the tone will blow you away...

  • That's because G&L is like Fender was under Leo Fender, they were about quality, not quantity. The G&L is far better than a Fender, at least when stock.

  • Man your awsome lol and i want that guitar im gonna get a job at Pizza Hut lol and save up for one :).

  • 8:54 wasted, since this awesome guitar is being run through a Line 6 Spider.

  • Also worth noting that the 3 bolt G&L system is solid (designed by George Fullerton, the "G" in G&L) and not the same as the ones used in the 1970s by Fender.

For a look at the predecessor of the F-100, google for "1978 music man sabre ggjaguar".

  • You completely lost me with the product history. Leo Fender sold Fender in the mid-60s and then in the mid-70s creates CLF Research, which builds and designs instruments for Music Man. Around 1980 there's some partner changes and at the end, the CLF facility becomes G&L. With this company, new designs are created that are different than the Music Man instruments before them and the Fenders before that. Most notably, better pickups and bridges.

Check out the wikipedia article on G&L Guitars.

  • I was not impressed by this demo. The tone wasn't great sounding. Of course, David's custom shop Strat didn't sound good with this Line 6 Spider amp, so I'll give it that. That looks like a nice quality Strat though...

  • I own a 93 s500 and it's absolutely the nicest strat i've ever played. If this guitar were being played through a Blues Jr you would have been convinced in my opinion. G&L guitars can get so many sounds.

  • I had a foreign made G&L strat, it was amazing!!!! I since sold it and latter bought an American Strat. what a disappointment. I was so sad that I sold it. It was way better. So much better too.

  • Great job, as always. By now I think you know, and probably knew, that Leo didn't leave Fender to go make G&L's because they were too expensive to make for the Fender factory. He was deathly ill. He had a no compete with Fender. Once he got better he worked for Musicman for a while until his no compete was up, then started G&L with his old buddy, Fullerton, and perfected his Fender designs.

  • I've got a candy apple red f100series2 from 1981. I'm the original owner. Absolutely the best guitar I've ever played. Ever!! If you've never had a chance to play one of these older ones, try to find one and do it....you'll be impressed.

  • Cool Video! I Love G&Ls! I bought a new F-100in 1980, and still have it. Thanks for posting a review of a personel favorite of mine.

  • I had one of these that I bought from an old friend. It was a gold color with a maple neck. I have not seen one like it ever. I traded it for a down payment on a BC Rich. I have been regretting it everyday since! Stupid Stupid Stupid!!!

  • skills!!

  • Great guitar, good review!

  • My F100 weighs as much as a Buick. But I love all my other G&Ls

  • Guitarists should keep in mind that Leo Fenderis the man behind Fender, Musicman and G&L.

Here I would like to show my appreciation to Leo Fender's lifetime friend and partner George Fullerton hence the name G&L (George&Leo).

One other person that I would like to salute is their formidable sales person Dale Hyatt and last but not least everyone at G&L for giving us musicians such fine and second to none instruments.

  • I met Leo Fender at the June 1982 Namm musical instrument fair held in Atlanta Georgia. In a photo I have with Leo at the G&L stand there is the F-100 guitar and the L1000 bass exhibited behind us.

Yes Leo has done Musicman before his final company G&L and he always said that G&L are tbe best guitars he has ever manufactured.

My Musicman Stingray (active) does not even start with my G&L L1000 which is passive, and that is thanks to the powerful M.F.D (magnetic field design) pickup.

  • Very cool model of guitar.. desirable! i've had a mid-90's legacy special for 15 years and its still as good as day 1. Recently picked up one of the tribute line comanche's, mainly because closing my eyes i couldnt feel or hear a difference from their american counterparts. G&L guitars seem to be eternally underground unless you're talking with guitar heads. Good review!

  • i had friend who got a prototype bass in 79 and later i got the f-100 seriesII. Its a blue transparent finish, still plays great. has serial number g000701. they started at 500 so it is pretty early production. wonder what my friend did with his prototype bass?

  • G&L F100

Cool features overlooked in the video:

    -Ebony fretboard

-Double expanding truss rod (never a back bow!)

    -Easy access truss rod adjustment

-Tight fitting neck/body joint (always on G&L guitars)

-Controls are as follows - Vol, Treble, Bass (not just two 'tone' controls), the splitter switch split both pickups, the 'out of phase' switch turned both pickups on and put them out of phase.

-The G&L vibrato was a monumental improvement over the original Fender trem.

  • G&L are truly amazing, authentic Fender instruments. I want a G&L Bass so badly. I have a friend who has an original. He can't play a note but he's saving it for its eventual value! So frustrating. That bass has the tone to rival any American Fender P-Bass or Jazz Bass. G&L don't get the notoriety they deserve. It's a shame Leo Fender couldn't even use his own name on these guitars since it was bought by CBS. His own name! I hate corporation rights that exceed those of individuals.

  • You should buy a tribute; same parts just assembled overseas and a lot cheaper. The tribute series still blows away Fender.

  • Don't buy a tribute, the re-sell value isn't very good and the american ones are usually under a thousand. The americans are hand made, not sure about the tributes, but dont spend 650 on a tribute.

  • I think I'm beginning to agree with you. I've demoed a few tributes and I wasn't knocked out by them. One thing I didn't like is that the maple fingerboards are glued on instead of being a single piece of wood. End analysis, I take back what I said before and would never give up my Mexican tele (heavily moddified though).

  • I can get a tele sound with the mini toggle switch on my s500, it uses the bridge and neck, lots of crunch.

  • Do those switches allow you to put any of your pickups in series?

  • Its a 5 way selector, with the toggle allowing all 3 pickups to be active, or bridge and neck. The pickups are ceramic magnets (less noisey and super hot), as far as the series, not sure. It really bites down hard when using the bridge and neck.

  • awesome!! kinda like a mix between a strat and a les paul

  • please review a G&L Comanche next

  • anyone know how to get a good punch sound on my fender using Line 6 15w spider III ?

and wats noise gate or distortion boost?

  • I was playing a Line 6 Spider in the music store today - I had the first knob on "blues", turned the gain (drive) up about 2/3, added a bit of echo, slight reverb, and all sounded well.

    Great punchy Fender Strat sound.

  • wooh positive comments i h8 negative comments woop woop

  • I think G&L are the best guitars you can get, and I think the best guitar of all time is a G&l Rampage

  • I agree - G&L guitars are phenominal.

I'd actually have to say that G&L guitars sound better than present day Fenders.

The tone you get from a nice G&L is just god-like.

    Great guitars.

  • ~Awesome guitar..I have a 1984 G&L S-500 is my number one guitar now...I would love to get an F-100 someday...the one featured here is a real beauty...~~

  • i realy like the simple and striped down look of the guitar. id love to play one for myslef

  • Great stuff - but when can we expect you to try out the Ibanez Jem that you keep gettin back to in the test videos?!

  • Cool guitar. They actually arent that expensive on Ebay.

By the way Dave, you always play that EVH "Panama" bend string tapping lick in those vintage guitars videos, it's the last lick we here in this video. :)

  • Amazing guitar! One thing cool about that G&L tremolo system is that it allows you to push the bar too, just not so much as with a floyd rose.

  • shred david shred :D your a really good guitar player.

  • oh crap!! I should've gone with G&L just checked their page, they've got some beautiful guitars on there... I KNOW when I'm out to buy one it's got to be a G&L!!!!

  • Thats a nice strat the body looks nice and chunky!!!^_^

  • great vid....!! LIGA CAMPEON COPA LIBERTADORES DE AMERICA!!!!!!

  • i want one!!

  • hey dave , i got a mexican strat with the 2 single coils and a humbucker. when i have my selector switch on the humbucker , and i move it one click toward the front. is that splitting my humbucker like you talked about, or using the humbucker and the single coil. my ear cant tell.

  • I think that is the humbucker and the middle pickup

    rock on!

    DT

  • i have a similat guitar.but is it when the switch is on for,is it using the inside coil of the humbucker and the middle pickup?or the full humbucker and middle pickup

  • so in which place is your humbucker

im thinking about taking one off my peavey and putting it on my strat

so is it on the back?

    or middle?

    or neck?

  • they're both humbuckers

  • no shit

    i was asking someone else

about the humbucker they put on their strat

  • It's funny that in every one of these videos there are different guitars in the background =P

  • hi, I have a G&L SC-3. With my Fender Pro Reverb, how can I produce a Gilmour distortion? I have a TS9.

    Thanks,

    Simone / Italy

  • Wow, when he held it upside down it looked spot on like a Mosrite.

  • My dad has an Aria guitar that he paid $1 for, and we can NOT find it on the internet...It looks, and sounds GREAT, and even the Guitar Center says it looks vaulable, but they cant even GUESS the price...we can find Aria guitars online, but not one as nice, and even close to the model, or the model number...

  • ty for review mate,

i got occasion to play with 2 original G&L old line limited edition

a comanche and this one... simply amazing instruments: you really can taste what you're sayin about the wish of Leo Fender making research and better guitars

    see ya,

    d

  • i cant tell the difference, between the two settings of the splitter switch. pretty small difference

  • Has a real nice sound, I'd like to get one of those for myself one day. Do you know how much they would go for on average?

  • I want pickups that can be single or humbucker.

  • PRS!

  • buy an HSS

  • sweet guitar rock on!

  • i love the vids, keep it up

  • so i guess this is a jazz guitar rite

  • But the feelings I feel when I listen some guitar players expressing themselves are making me thinking if I could express my feelings playing the guitar one day... thanks for sharing those videos with us.

    Rock On!

  • Hey guys, you know what? I watch your videos since long time ago, you helped me to pay attention to all that instruments inside the songs I already listened before, and you know what? I'm getting in love with a special instrument... the guitar... to be sincere, I don't buy a guitar only because I don't have enough patience to learn how to play it correct, by "the rational way" that it should be.

  • Awsome vid.

And in the Description thing of your video, I think you meant to say, "In this episode, we will review..." instead of "In this module, we will review" Sorry! I'm a grammer nerd...

  • cool guitars dave you played so wicked awwsome guitars

  • i mean partner

  • sweeet guitar

  • you should become a patron

  • That's a kickass guitar. Great Review.
