@bowler8 Dunno. In a way I'm glad she didn't, because I felt that Clarice seemed way different in Hannibal than in Silence (the character, not just the actress), and it would have thrown me off even more if it was the same actress playing the same character but acting like a different character, if that makes any sense. 'Course, I haven't watched in a while.
That's exactly why she didn't return for any sequel. The actions/personality of Clarice was drastically modified and Jodie refused to play her again stating the integrity of the character had been overly compromised. Clarice was nothing like her strong willed, independent woman from the first movie.
@jckfmsincty Meryl has been nominated a record-breaking 16 times and won twice. In contrast, Jodie has been nominated twice and just so happened to win both times. They are both extraordinary actresses but Meryl has been around a long time and her her 2 wins were only 3 years apart. She hasn't won an Oscar since "Sophie's Choice" in 1982. But as mentioned, she has been nominated several times and is usually seen as the greatest living actress of all time.
@bombass2000 Jodie has been nominated 4 times. She got her first nomination when she was just a kid. She's been around in the movie business longer than Meryl Streep. but Meryl Streep has played more great roles.
I didn't see this movie until about a year ago, but I instantly fell in love with Jodie. There are much more beautiful actresses out there but she's so smart and talented, absolutely deserved this
What he says comes down to simple 'hey, all this stuff isn't worth shi*e, no matter who's gonna win after all'. I'm curious if he said this deliberately or just came up with it accidentally. Either way I would love to see faces of the bastards in the audience hearing that ;]
As to Jodie... Well, I'm happy for her to have won, she's simply great and...damn she's got a really low voice o_O
God, what a ramble.....it's for women, it's for feminists...it's for women.....can't people like her (admitedly very talented) just say "thank you" without being so damn political?
@mjtvalfather It was an eloquent speech and statement. It's her time she can use it to say something meaningful besides thank you. Atleast she wasn't rambling incoherently like so many winners.
@mjtvalfather It's because of people like you that "people like her" feel the need to be active in their ethics; but it's also rather odd that you're not realizing that as actors, they're artists, and art has always been intimately connected with its contemporary socio-political issues. Chances are an actor who makes a film without being self-reflexive about what sort of questions and concerns the film is trying to raise doesn't understand his/her character or the craft itself.
OMG readinig the biggotted, superficial and ignorant reviews here about lesbians and morality make me wonder what rock these people have been hiding under for years. Jodi was always tomboyish and I respect her wanting to keep her personal life private. I don't give a crap who somebody sleeps with and I have to wonder why the morons posting here care. Does it really matter who we love? Like...at all? She's a brilliant actress and that is what the Oscars are about.
@bbaggins1298 I thought what he said was lovely. I wish awards ceremonies still had lovely sentiments like the one he expressed here (which was clearly written for him).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hints of her possibly being a lesbian shone through there at the end "feminist hero", rather than female hero. Truly a shame if she is indeed a lesbian, to much of that sinful behavior in the world today.
@kieran1990able I wonder if she has a family of her own since I read from an article she personally doesn't like to talk about her sexual orientation to the media, but nevertheless she still is a brilliant actress...I also wonder how it would be like if she reprised her role as Clarice Starling in Hannibal?
@jckfmsincty She did much more than that. Did you see the showdown in Buffalo Bill's basement? The autopsy scene? So much emotion in her eyes playing a very quiet character. It's rare that the Academy goes for a great subtle performance and they did here.
@High5Brah Actually, I don't even know why Hopkins was nominated for BEST ACTOR instead of Supporting Actor -- although he gave a masterful performance no doubt. The film, is actually revolved around sexism and how Foster's character is affected by it (for example, the villain treats his victims like objects, Clarice Starling is used as bait by her boss or whatever, etc..).. Clarice is CLEARLY the main character of the film. DUH
@High5Brah Wrong. If you think she was "just riding the Hopkins train" watch her in that whole basement sequence as she's going after Buffalo Bill. Some of the best acting ever. Never has fear been portrayed better. Don't underestimate what she brought to the film just because Hopkins got the flashier character. Foster had to play a character that internalized everything and still be compelling. That's more difficult. She carried the movie.
@rtmeador - he's talking about how there are no objective standards by which we can (or should) judge art. Its easier with athletics because you can time a race, measure a jump, etc. There are objective standards there that allow you to say one person is better than the other. But art is like food - judging what is good and bad is subjective.
BRAVO!!! One of my favorite all-time actresses. Truly a Hollywood legend. This performance by Jodie was no doubt worthy.... she encompassed the power of the character soo beautifully. I think that role was much harder than a lot of people think. Portraying a STRONG female character at a time where these roles where not as easy to comeby. She essentially was the make or break factor of the movie. If her performance would've stunk, then the movie would've stunk.
The trouble is she read the script and did not want to reprise the role for Hannibal. There was clearly something in the narrative that did not inspire or maybe, just maybe she wanted to move on.
@rohansrider Rumour is there was much in the script that she didn't agree with. She didn't think that Clarice would do half the things that occured in the sequel.
For example, the original script had Clarice and Lecter running away together at the end and she didn't agree with that at all.
@nauris706 I totally agree. Jodie Foster is one of a kind, truly a classy and gifted actress. The legends of the Hollywood have nearly all passed away. I don't think Hollywood will ever have the caliber of stars it did in the 1940s-70s. Back in the old days, performers had to sing, dance and act in order to compete and get hired. Nowadays, all "actors" have to do is take their tops off, men included! (Taylor Lautner anyone?)
jodie foster did a great role in the movie but if you compare her work with anthony hopkins then I will have to say Hopkins wins unquestionably!!! FACT!
@navieedful Not a fact. That's an opinion. I like Foster's performance better actually. Hopkins just had the flashier character and was great, but Foster's performance had some real depth to it. You could see the fear behind her eyes. Together they were magic.
DAMN I LOVE ALL THOSE WOMEN LOL...JODIE FOSTER IS BEST THOUGH...her emotion she has goes on for days...I think the one thing she had over julianne moore and other women acting is that she actually had something traumatize her...I don't know for sure, but you can just see the depth in her eyes during her performance. Like a little puppy, but yet strong, powerful, and intelligent.
@MrRDR911 Actually SotL won the BIG FIVE (one of the few to do so); Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress. I think only one or two other movies have ever done that.

What a woman and actress! I love her. She has so many qualities; she's intelligent, serious, beautiful, classy, professional, down-to-earth, so different from some vulgar exhibitionists and talentless "actresses" around . I wish I could meet her one day, she's my role model!
Forget Foster and Hopkins, Ted Levine is the one whose performances stands the test of time - although many people will never admit it, since the character is hardly one they aspire to be.
