  • "Changing Steps consists of ten solos, five duets, three trios, two quartets, and two quintets, which can be performed in any order, in any space, in any combination. Cunningham stated 'I wanted to make a piece which could have a different order from performance to performance.' He made the dances separately so that each one could occupy a small space. The piece could therefore be performed almost anywhere, and could last from around 12 to 43 minutes."
