You're right, the yellow sun practically is his main life support allowing him to go for days (maybe years) without food and water due to his advance Kryptonian physiology.

The thing is, he is on a planet with a red sun; which pretty much reduce him to that of a normal human, meaning that he now needs to eat and drink to survive due to the absense of his super genetics.

But since he was under a red sun, No EM biofield. So the costume was as frail as any other type of clothing.
