I was a kid in Montreal watching this great series. I had never seen the Soviets play before, but I instantly became a fan. I heard that they based their style of play on some old-time Canadian instruction (in some book) which emphasized passing and control of the puck, i.e. no dumping and chasing. I was so impressed by their playing making and teamwork. We looked so individualistic. We won the series 4-3-1 but the Soviet hockey style won me as a fan. They don't seem to play the same way today:(
russia was just so fast. they played a really weird style of game and now its an obsolete style it hasnt worked since 93. and Canada is spelt with a C. its hard to insult a country over something they invented and that happened 38 years ago.
i agree, it is humiliating that Canada only won the series in the 8th game against these subpar bandy playing russian noodnicks. but hey, Canada likes doing it in dramatic fashion.
i don't know about you guys, but i cant of anything more humiliating than being up 3 games to 1 and losing the series 4 games to 3.....ON HOME ICE!! Face it Russia...you always have been and always will be second best
@joshmania7 Well no. One this the the Soviet union not Russia. Two we followed the rules as you did. You say we won the Olympics unfairly but look at the challenge cup, all Canadians and 2 Swedes vs the CCCP and you lost. Now don't get me wrong Canada is amazing at hockey, but you guy's really just got to suck it up and admit that for 50 some years you were not the best. We accept we are not the best now, you accept you were not the best then, ok?
@Potts132 One: it is called Russia now so that's why I was refering to it as Russia.
Two: You think the USSR was the best for 50 years???? Sure, they dominated in the olympics, but they had no competition whatsoever. The USSR team was composed of players who could have easily played in the NHL, and yet somehow they were classified as "amateurs". And so these USSR "amateurs" were pitted against a bunch of canadian amateurs who were of course humiliated year after year. Is that fair??
@Potts132 Trust me, if Canada was allowed to send their absolute best players , the soviets wouldn't have done nearly as well as they did. Team Canada proved that to you by winning the summit series in 72. Yes, it was very close, but think of it this way. The Soviets played with the same team members for hours every day, almost every day of the year, so they were essentially brothers. Team Canada was composed of all different players from different teams who played against one another and
@Potts132 didn't get along. Within 4 games they started playing as a team and were able to come back and win in dramatic fashion...even with the biased refereeing of Kompalla and other hardships. Now that's impressive.
The challenge cup didn't mean shit. Yes, we had our best, but again, all players from other teams. Canada had exactly THREE practices to get ready for this, the soviets...God only knows. And we still won a game out of it. The only thing that USSR did that truly ..
YA real humiliation despite us winning the series, notice how they don't show Paul Henderson's winning goal yet they show Ken Dryden getting scored on or Phil Esposito pissed off in the box or John Paul Parise so frustrated he threatend the ref or what about when they show those soldiers taking Eagleson away but they don't show those same soldiers getting assaulted by Frank Mahovolich with his hockey stick
@Canuckfan78 Yeah, this jerk is just another propagandist. That's one of the problems with the Internet. Any goon with a clip and an opinion can spread his lies.
UNSOLVED MYSTERY...the only clue i still have to explain why such a hockey machine can lose vs a junior caliber hockey club ( USA Lake Placid 1980 ) is that the humilliation of Tretyak by Tikhonov who loses patience too fast with his respected goalie can explain why this decision exploded in his face...after Myshkin went in the net , USSR team didn't play with a strong desire to win this game , maybe a lesson to Tikhonov...never again he have done this blunder
i can't see 1972 as humilliation for Canada , shocking yes but nothing to compare with the 1981 Canada cup ultimate humilliation (losing 8-1)
In 72 , they came back to win the serie in olympic dimension ice in USSR !
it's really strange to think that the best soviet teams of all-time , destroyed the NHL all-stars in the challenge cup in 1979 (team Canada except 2 players) and team Canada in Montreal forum in the 1981 canada cup...BUT losing vs weak USA team (lake placid) ...unsolved mystery !
@vesivialvy IT really isn't mystery at all. It means that on any given night, any team can beat another. That's why the true test of the best team is at least 8 games and wit teams that have had time to be together, practice and become a team. It's very hard to compare apples and oranges, but that's exactly what was happening in Canada Cups, the Summit Series and the Olympics. No doubt the Russian's dominated the Olympics and World's with great teams and wll conditioned players.
Why isn't there a clip of Henderson's goals that won the series for Canada? Oh, that's right. They would tend to challenge the lie that Russia actually won this series.
The Russians were never far behind in talent though and we have to admit that. We under-estimated them, but we were better at that time and we still are, but they have had some pretty good players. In fact, in my view Tretiak is the greatest goalie.
The Soviets should have kept Eagleson, he turned out to be a real slimeball, screwing players, especial Bobby Orr, the greatest player hockey will ever see IMO
Mario Lemieux was above Gretzky in my view, and we haven't even got to Bobby Orr yet! Talking about Gretkzy's descent is like talking about Mardonna having Croatian in his blood! It isn't your blood but the culture and the spirit of the country that shapes you. The whole human race is one blood.
@MrTommypops haha! if you want to count --- ok! you won 1 goal in 72! we won 74, then 75-76 and also Challenge Cup and Canada cup 81...8 to 1....trust me! but anyway I think all these times only sport won! because Canada had great players, sometimes dirty as Ckark, but great,,,,
you guys are brain deads watch how canada took out the guys ankle how are we proud to win when you hack at a guy like that its cheap shots like that that win our games watch the game with gretzky and mario play in the olympics no penelty for both of them hooking to score a goal way to win
@17steele17 i guess your refering to Bobby Clark who slashed, yes that was a cheap shot but it was because of the refs the Russians picked, both sides were at fault alot in the series, but Canada came out on top, Russia even cut the tv feed during the last game because they didnt want ppl to c that they tried to not add the goal, that is y the NHL commissioner was getting arrested at approximately 3:00 but the Canadian players went to get him with there sticks and brought him to there bench
@17steele17 No one seems to notice that Kharlamov played on that powerplay and played in the rest of the series. He was benched for having several poor games in a row (prior to the "broken ankle") they used the faked broken ankle as propoganda since he was being benched already anyway but, he most assuredly played in the final game anyway with no broken ankle. (It must have been a miracle cure or something pffft)
@RigaFraction I didn't know that...too long ago, I guess. All you ever hear is "blah, blah the only reason Canada won is because Bobby Clarke broke Kharlamov's ankle, weep, weep, whine whine, etc." Thanks for pointing out the truth. The Russians played magnificently, and we went into that series arrogant. But we won it fair and square.
@Adanac12345 Clarke's slash does not make me proud. But look at ALL the facts, not just the ones that suit you. Kharlamov was no angel. In fact, he had the most penalty minutes of any Sov player, and was second only to (you guessed it) Clarke for overall minutes. He miraculously played on that "broken" ankle for two more games. If that removed the Russian's best player then it evened things out. Bobby Orr, arguably one of the greatest didn't play, and neither did Hull or Gordie Howe.
Well u won it. I mean I cant really argue with that. History cares about final result only. U did win...at the same time the tournament clearly showed that Russian hockey was at the very high level. That all there is to it. Everything else is meaningless.
@Adanac12345 There is no doubt the Russians played extremely well. We were arrogant going into that series, and learned one hell of a painful lesson. I've never taken the Russians for granted in hockey, and that last game was a defining moment for us as a nation. I remember the teachers canceling class, getting everyone in the gym and wheeling in two TV's. Everyone in the country watched. When Henderson scored "that goal" the country went wild. It's our "Miracle on Ice."
@Adanac12345 Your team played MAGNIFICENTLY in 2010. That was one of the three or four greatest games I've ever seen. It could have gone either way. My favourite games are the 72 final, the new years eve game in 74 (Russ v the Habs), the final game in the 87 Challenge Cup, and the 2010 gold medal game. I don't wanna pick which of these is my favourite!
lol..soviet hockey was definetly best hockey in 70s and 80s... those summit series were referee games were canada always had the edge, thats why they won it..
none of you know anything about hockey. Once the Canadian team in 72 got its' legs in game 4 it never lost a game. 3 straight. Let's play an 8 game series again, this time Canada's team won't be overconfident, will know exactly and will be conditioned like they are now. It will be a cake-walk like the juniors who defeated the Russians 8-0 in 08.
@rushrules65 You dumb bitch Canada lost game 4 and 5 and the only reason Canada won games 6 7 and 8 was because Clarke intentionally fractured Kharlamov's ankle
@johnh23 the reason this series was so close has many reasons, the Canadians were overconfident, out of shape because it was played in their off season and the officiating was terrible. Russia did prove they were a strong team, but had this been played in April and the officiating were fair the series probably wouldn't have been as close. The Russians have proven to be great players Ovechkin is arguably the best player in the NHL.
@DreamingOfStuff So Russia was all about Kharlamov? I guess 1984 and 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups were also won by Canada because Kharlamov was not there? What about this? I respect the Soviet Hockey system and more so, its players, for their conditioning and their skill. I can say that objectively, not call you a "bitch" because I agree or don't agree with you, and continue on objectively appreciating th strengths in both hockey systems. Can you say that, or are you "dreamingofstuff"?
This is obviously tongue-in-cheek...the description made me laugh.
Those Soviet teams of the 70s and 80s were amazing, there were great games between them and Canada. Can't we leave it at that, rather than have all this hate?
HA HA HAAA!! This is hilarious comrade.Great vid.You should do one on KANADA´s humiliating sudden death overtime defeat at the hands of the USSA in yesterday´s olympic gold medal final in Vancouver :-)))
I don't understand ,are you trying to tell me that this video is going to convince me that russia beat canada? You show me no proof or no score boards? This makes no sense, sorry guys Canada is the best hockey nation in the world. It has been proven year after year in olympics, world championships, and world Jr Championships(6 straight goals) sorry buddy but you have nothing! nice try
I am sorry what was the last time Canada won Olympic Gold medal????
And when was the last time Canada won world championship????
May be u should go look for some proof and score boards. And about Jr Championships..yeah..good job Canada. May be u should count under 10 world championships, I am sure Canada dominate those as well.
canada won a olympic gold in 2002 and 2010? i dont see what your getting at .. and world jr's is pretty much the rookies of the nhl ... more then 80% go on to play in the nhl the very next year... so basically world jrs say that we will dominate in the nhl in the years to come ...and a world championship? really canada doesnt send there best players to those tourneys cuz the rest are still in nhl playoffs..but once again nice try bud you still have nothing
But lost to Russia in 2006, funny u forgot to mention it. And oh wait, actually lost in 2008 and 2009 in world championship. And trust me no1 cares about Jrs. In fact this year none of the countries applied to host it, except for Canada, won by default. And Canada does send pretty good team each year. Sharks consistently lose in 1st or 2nd round every year. Thats 50% of the team right there. And Ovechkin, Malkin and Datsyuk never get to go.
U did get fluky Gold this year I give you that. But
A fluky gold? we beat russia 7-3 in the quarter finals,, thats not fluky its a blowout... and to us world jr's is way more important then world championship, hardly anyone watches it, we watch the stanley cup finals instead..It's a shitty tournament because nobody ever sends there best team, it's almost as bad as the sprangler cup
@Adanac12345 let me respond, the big difference is that prior to 72 the Soviets had never played NHL caliber hockey so the assumption was that they would get their asses whipped, well it never happened. It was an extremly close well fought series which could have gone either way!!!!
@Adanac12345 Lol, nobody gives a shit about the World Championships except Russians cause thats all they can win. Out of 11 best on best tournaments, Canada has won 7, Russia has won one, WAY back in 1981. Canada had only 2 of their Olympic players on the 2009 World Championship roster, so tell me where ur getting this 50% stat. You sir/madam, know absolutely nothing about hockey.
Noboyd gives a shit??? I live in Canada, every time Canada wins a junior championship (i am not even talking about actualy world championship) there is a huge story in all newspapers, TV is going nuts and every1 is really excited about it.
@bloodwitch0789 Dude I live in Canada every time Canada win's everyone flips out. When you lost in 2010 it was all over the place, I'm not speculating I live in Alberta I know it's a big deal in Canada.
@Potts132 impressed me was winning the 1981 Canada Cup...a true best on best competition. Canada was prepared... We even had Gretzky! and we got slaughtered 8-1 in the final game. So for that USSR, I congratulate you. Out of 5 Canada cups, Canada did win 4 however.
So yeah, USSR may have the medals and some fantastic players, but truly Canada is the best.
@joshmania7 Even Canadian's I know are ashamed of the Canada cup. I won't say anything about it but I know lots of Canadians who thought that was a disgrace. Now I really don't feel like reading four comment's but I'll assume you used the "USSR had more time or something like that. But it's called being prepared. Each of those players had other teams to play for they just took more time to practice get better.
@Potts132 The Canada Cup was probably the only hockey event in the world that was actually fair. Our best vs the best players in the world, and we won fair and square 4 times. People like you bitch about the biased refereeing, but we had refs from sweden, finland, USA, even that idiot Josef Kompalla officiated some games. And we didn't wake up the players with late phonecalls and steal their luggage either. Other nations were just frustrated that their best wasn't good enough
@joshmania7 I have heard more Canadians say the reffing was bad the Soviets actually. You say all those countries but what do they have in common? They hated us. Who in the world other then the Soviet's wanted us to win? No one pretty much.
Sweden Finland and America all wanted us dead, they had more reasons then Canadians to want us to lose.
Josef Kompalla was a bad person to bring up, his reffing was horrible. I could have done better then that.
@Potts132 Of course Kompalla's reffing was horrible! He seemed to help the Soviets out a fair bit during the final games in the Summit series though, didn't he? Look at the penalties in games 6 and 8! For some strange reason, he made it into the IIHF hall of fame too. Weird
My point is, he certainly supported the Soviet team. And believe me, the Swedes and the Fins hated Canada as much as USSR because of our rough style of play. Pretty much everyone in Europe wanted to see us defeated.
@joshmania7 Yes, I can admit he was a terrible ref, when we say that other reffs are horrible we get attacked for"making excuses" but it's not an excuse when you use it.
Wanted to see you defeated, yes, did you get defeated all the time in those days yes. They both had more to hate us for then you. We are not the most liked people in the world. Although I love Canadians (: Great people
Funny how u decided to go to 2002....What happened to 2006??
Well Canad has no political power, that why its a second rate country. At the same time u do play hockey on a decent level and u did win Olympic games. Congrats...we'll see what happens in 2014.
@Adanac12345 Do we have to win every tournament to have any credibility? Yes we lost in 2006. Please, by all means let me know if you want to debate Canada's record in international hockey. By the way, what happened to the Americans in Olympic baseball? They've one once, in 2000. They have one gold and one bronze. CUBA has the most gold, and in the year US took gold, Cuba took silver. US wasn't in the medal round in 92 or 04. God forbid anyone should stop a yank from bragging.
All I am saying that if u wanna use 2002 hockey, then u should probably take 2006 into consideration as well. (BTW in 2002 RUssia didnt even play Canada, so what excatly r u refereing to?)
I have never really watched baseball, so cant really say anything about it.
Overall: Canada did win Ilympics. I would say its the best team right now. At the same time we did beat you in 2006, so u cant reall say that Canada has been dominant for the last 10 years or something. Right now u r on top, but everything can change in 2014, especially considering that we will be playing at home.

Canada owns all, most olympic golds, most Canada cups, most world juniors. im american and i salute you as a true hockey fan. no one comes close to Canada
You wish you had the depth at forward as we do, and you wish you had the depth at goaltending.
PS: As for your claim of dirty tactics by the Canadian team: Yes, Clarke was underhanded. But you are "conveniently" ignoring the fact that the Russians off the ice "misplaced" team Canada's meals, woke them up in the night to disrupt their sleep and set up incredibly bias refs in the last 4 games in Russia. AND WE STILL WON!!!!!! WEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Don't get me wrong, the Russian team is capable of beating Canada in any given game (because of those potent top two lines), but Canada all around is BY FAR the top country in the world. Over 50 percent of NHL players are Canadian, roughly 50 percent of all first round draft picks are Canadian and no country produces the sheer number of effective players as Canada does. You wish you have the depth at defense that we do.
It's actually funny to see you delusional Soviet idiots claim that Russia's hockey team is better than Canada's... ARE YOU KIDDING??? Take a look at the depth chart idiots! I will be the first to admit that Russia's top two lines are the most potent in the world. But the fact of the matter is that Canada could field two to three olympic teams of the same caliber as the single Russian team. Your defense is a shambles, and with Nabokov as your top goaltender I think you have a good ways to go.
Soviets win so many Olympic Gold's because they cheated and used pros. You really think those guys playing for the Red Army and the Central Red Army aren't pro's? The only people who actually believed they were Army officers who played hockey in their spare time were members of the IOC. It was so ridiculous that Canada & Sweden for a time refuse to enter teams into the tournament.
Canada couldn't even send Jr. B players during that time because under Olympic rules they were professionals.
Finns are good in floorball, sweds are even better, it was great final.
I'm 11 so? i know soviet union etc. You really don't like hot dogs? Have you try it? They are very tasty, you should try differents spices, mustard is great!
Who cares about fucken Olympics? To beat canada on its own soil 2 years ago, thats the achievement. And the next year after!!!!!!We beat brazil in football too in 1988 in Seul Olympics.BRAZIL! What did canada win?Stupid series 1000 years ago?Ha!
If only I could have convinced Harry to play Gil Perreault in every game in 1972 and inserted him in Ron Ellis' spot on the line with Henderson and Clarke. As well the Hadfield, Ratelle and Gilbert line should have played all 8 games too..I do agree with Sinden's choice of Esposito, Cournoyer and Mahovlich as line #1..We missed Orr, Hull, Laparriere, Dallas Smith and some others and too bad the CCCP didnt have the great Firsov, Alexandrov and Davydov. Still the greatest series in history.
useing percentages?? lol, fuck you are desperate. i'll stick with the actual number of titles as would anyone who wasnt completely desperate like yourself. Canada has the most golds making them the greatest. anyway if Canadian NHLers were in the olympics in the 60s,70s and 80s. russia wouldnt have 2 golds and you know it. the Canada cups proved that.
percentages = easy to do. sorry if u don't understand. CCCP's numbers are much more impressive that is Fact. 1 more gold in 50 more years? common. Nonsense..Canada and CCCP were pretty much even throughout the 70s, sides the fact Canada was pretty dirty but both teams did their share, however a 2 handed "sword" slash on the USSR's best player's ankle is just wrong.
i actually found out something interesting..Canada has 9 golds including the 2 from the womens..so as far as mens hockey goes..tie 7 to 7, and if u include the unified team that's 8 to 7. :) Im not sure if womens hockey should even count due to CCCP never having a womens team.
Then u might as well consider britains gold a Canadian gold seeing as the team was entirly Canadian WW2 soldiers. the soviet union isnt a country anymore so Russia today has 0 golds.
right you are. We can argue about who is better all day and I can guarantee neither one of us will be swayed in the others direction. So instead of this nonsense I think we can both agree on how they both were exceptionally amazing and that there will never be a rivalry even close to Canada vs CCCP in anysport :).
agreed, last few years the media (mostly american) have been hyping the Usa , Canada rivalry as a big deal (esp. since 2002) but it will never compare to the pedigree and intensity of Russian taking on Canadian on ice. i watch game 8 every once in a while and its a mindf@ck how intense it was.
Check the stats and then you know....CCCP was best, in my opinion canada is third best hockey country just after CSSR, that's not so bad, and you are best in that swiping game
Finn has never win gold medal, so??? What that has to with anything, Canada is still third best hockey country, it's great achievement. By the way sorry about that swiping game comment, Canada is also pretty good in Rodeo thing, clowns and horse, that must be great sport!
Russia is Russia, same country who cares. Vodka is great and I drink straight from bottle, so? It don't make canada better country what ever we finns do, you are good in hockey, be the third best in world is not shame, be proud!
Wau, I just realized that Canada is best in women's hockey, two gold in olympics, USA has one, USA is second, well americans really succeeds in feminin sports, good for you :)
I know that finns are ugly so? what it has to do with hockey? Canadiens womens are best looking in the whole world, every nation admires them, even those Latins who thinks that onion shape ass and big breasts are sexy....they are so wrong!
by the way, what is that hot dog thing all the time, don't like hot dogs or what?
I'm from Canada but can't say anything wrong against Russian, players like Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, etc. are SO fun to watch.. love them.. Ovechkin proved to everyone that russian could play rough even if they were better known for their fast, skilled, puck controlling style..
These 2 countries both dominate hockey with both completly different styles.. and theyre both the best at their style...
I remember it like yesterday, Team Canada was not in shape or prepared to play and thought it would be easy. This was REALLY a case of underestimating opponent, and were of course without Bobby Orr. They still won series in the end despite these handicaps.
The way the video description was typed in stereotypical Russian-English grammar, I knew this couldn't be true. Nobody on the internet is THAT stupid.
If Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull had played in the 72 Summit Series nobody outside of Russia would even know who Valery Kharlamov is, sorry, Canada wins every game.

following my previous post....
UNSOLVED MYSTERY...the only clue i still have to explain why such a hockey machine can lose vs a junior caliber hockey club ( USA Lake Placid 1980 ) is that the humilliation of Tretyak by Tikhonov who loses patience too fast with his respected goalie can explain why this decision exploded in his face...after Myshkin went in the net , USSR team didn't play with a strong desire to win this game , maybe a lesson to Tikhonov...never again he have done this blunder
vesivialvy 1 year ago
i can't see 1972 as humilliation for Canada , shocking yes but nothing to compare with the 1981 Canada cup ultimate humilliation (losing 8-1)
In 72 , they came back to win the serie in olympic dimension ice in USSR !
it's really strange to think that the best soviet teams of all-time , destroyed the NHL all-stars in the challenge cup in 1979 (team Canada except 2 players) and team Canada in Montreal forum in the 1981 canada cup...BUT losing vs weak USA team (lake placid) ...unsolved mystery !
vesivialvy 1 year ago

Kharlamov's goal in the first game was the best part of the series, didn't notice it in this video.
It didn't matter that Canada barely managed to eke out a win, the world had been shown they could be beat at their national sport.
Since then, Canada's greatest player ever has a Russian name and almost all the NHL teams are in the US.

you guys are brain deads watch how canada took out the guys ankle how are we proud to win when you hack at a guy like that its cheap shots like that that win our games watch the game with gretzky and mario play in the olympics no penelty for both of them hooking to score a goal way to win
17steele17 1 year ago
@17steele17 i guess your refering to Bobby Clark who slashed, yes that was a cheap shot but it was because of the refs the Russians picked, both sides were at fault alot in the series, but Canada came out on top, Russia even cut the tv feed during the last game because they didnt want ppl to c that they tried to not add the goal, that is y the NHL commissioner was getting arrested at approximately 3:00 but the Canadian players went to get him with there sticks and brought him to there bench
CoolDeath91 1 year ago
@17steele17 No one seems to notice that Kharlamov played on that powerplay and played in the rest of the series. He was benched for having several poor games in a row (prior to the "broken ankle") they used the faked broken ankle as propoganda since he was being benched already anyway but, he most assuredly played in the final game anyway with no broken ankle. (It must have been a miracle cure or something pffft)
RigaFraction 1 year ago
@RigaFraction I didn't know that...too long ago, I guess. All you ever hear is "blah, blah the only reason Canada won is because Bobby Clarke broke Kharlamov's ankle, weep, weep, whine whine, etc." Thanks for pointing out the truth. The Russians played magnificently, and we went into that series arrogant. But we won it fair and square.
wilmanric1 1 year ago
@wilmanric1
Fair and square by literally breaking Kharlamov ankle??? Does it look very fair?
Adanac12345 1 year ago
@Adanac12345 Clarke's slash does not make me proud. But look at ALL the facts, not just the ones that suit you. Kharlamov was no angel. In fact, he had the most penalty minutes of any Sov player, and was second only to (you guessed it) Clarke for overall minutes. He miraculously played on that "broken" ankle for two more games. If that removed the Russian's best player then it evened things out. Bobby Orr, arguably one of the greatest didn't play, and neither did Hull or Gordie Howe.
wilmanric1 1 year ago
@wilmanric1
Well u won it. I mean I cant really argue with that. History cares about final result only. U did win...at the same time the tournament clearly showed that Russian hockey was at the very high level. That all there is to it. Everything else is meaningless.
Adanac12345 1 year ago
@Adanac12345 There is no doubt the Russians played extremely well. We were arrogant going into that series, and learned one hell of a painful lesson. I've never taken the Russians for granted in hockey, and that last game was a defining moment for us as a nation. I remember the teachers canceling class, getting everyone in the gym and wheeling in two TV's. Everyone in the country watched. When Henderson scored "that goal" the country went wild. It's our "Miracle on Ice."
wilmanric1 1 year ago
@Adanac12345 Your team played MAGNIFICENTLY in 2010. That was one of the three or four greatest games I've ever seen. It could have gone either way. My favourite games are the 72 final, the new years eve game in 74 (Russ v the Habs), the final game in the 87 Challenge Cup, and the 2010 gold medal game. I don't wanna pick which of these is my favourite!
wilmanric1 1 year ago
lol..soviet hockey was definetly best hockey in 70s and 80s... those summit series were referee games were canada always had the edge, thats why they won it..
juhdiakathat 1 year ago
none of you know anything about hockey. Once the Canadian team in 72 got its' legs in game 4 it never lost a game. 3 straight. Let's play an 8 game series again, this time Canada's team won't be overconfident, will know exactly and will be conditioned like they are now. It will be a cake-walk like the juniors who defeated the Russians 8-0 in 08.
rushrules65 1 year ago
@rushrules65 You dumb bitch Canada lost game 4 and 5 and the only reason Canada won games 6 7 and 8 was because Clarke intentionally fractured Kharlamov's ankle
DreamingOfStuff 1 year ago
@DreamingOfStuff Well we didn't have Orr or Bobby Hull. woulda bin different.
johnh23 1 year ago
@johnh23 the reason this series was so close has many reasons, the Canadians were overconfident, out of shape because it was played in their off season and the officiating was terrible. Russia did prove they were a strong team, but had this been played in April and the officiating were fair the series probably wouldn't have been as close. The Russians have proven to be great players Ovechkin is arguably the best player in the NHL.

@DreamingOfStuff Bull.
wilmanric1 1 year ago
@DreamingOfStuff So Russia was all about Kharlamov? I guess 1984 and 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups were also won by Canada because Kharlamov was not there? What about this? I respect the Soviet Hockey system and more so, its players, for their conditioning and their skill. I can say that objectively, not call you a "bitch" because I agree or don't agree with you, and continue on objectively appreciating th strengths in both hockey systems. Can you say that, or are you "dreamingofstuff"?

And when was the last time Canada won world championship????
May be u should go look for some proof and score boards. And about Jr Championships..yeah..good job Canada. May be u should count under 10 world championships, I am sure Canada dominate those as well.
Adanac12345 2 years ago
canada won a olympic gold in 2002 and 2010? i dont see what your getting at .. and world jr's is pretty much the rookies of the nhl ... more then 80% go on to play in the nhl the very next year... so basically world jrs say that we will dominate in the nhl in the years to come ...and a world championship? really canada doesnt send there best players to those tourneys cuz the rest are still in nhl playoffs..but once again nice try bud you still have nothing
beardawg89 2 years ago
But lost to Russia in 2006, funny u forgot to mention it. And oh wait, actually lost in 2008 and 2009 in world championship. And trust me no1 cares about Jrs. In fact this year none of the countries applied to host it, except for Canada, won by default. And Canada does send pretty good team each year. Sharks consistently lose in 1st or 2nd round every year. Thats 50% of the team right there. And Ovechkin, Malkin and Datsyuk never get to go.
U did get fluky Gold this year I give you that. But
Adanac12345 2 years ago
A fluky gold? we beat russia 7-3 in the quarter finals,, thats not fluky its a blowout... and to us world jr's is way more important then world championship, hardly anyone watches it, we watch the stanley cup finals instead..It's a shitty tournament because nobody ever sends there best team, it's almost as bad as the sprangler cup
beardawg89 1 year ago
@Adanac12345 let me respond, the big difference is that prior to 72 the Soviets had never played NHL caliber hockey so the assumption was that they would get their asses whipped, well it never happened. It was an extremly close well fought series which could have gone either way!!!!
bladerunner9405 1 year ago
@Adanac12345 Lol, nobody gives a shit about the World Championships except Russians cause thats all they can win. Out of 11 best on best tournaments, Canada has won 7, Russia has won one, WAY back in 1981. Canada had only 2 of their Olympic players on the 2009 World Championship roster, so tell me where ur getting this 50% stat. You sir/madam, know absolutely nothing about hockey.

Potts132 1 year ago
@Potts132 impressed me was winning the 1981 Canada Cup...a true best on best competition. Canada was prepared... We even had Gretzky! and we got slaughtered 8-1 in the final game. So for that USSR, I congratulate you. Out of 5 Canada cups, Canada did win 4 however.
So yeah, USSR may have the medals and some fantastic players, but truly Canada is the best.
joshmania7 1 year ago
@joshmania7 Even Canadian's I know are ashamed of the Canada cup. I won't say anything about it but I know lots of Canadians who thought that was a disgrace. Now I really don't feel like reading four comment's but I'll assume you used the "USSR had more time or something like that. But it's called being prepared. Each of those players had other teams to play for they just took more time to practice get better.
Potts132 1 year ago
@Potts132 The Canada Cup was probably the only hockey event in the world that was actually fair. Our best vs the best players in the world, and we won fair and square 4 times. People like you bitch about the biased refereeing, but we had refs from sweden, finland, USA, even that idiot Josef Kompalla officiated some games. And we didn't wake up the players with late phonecalls and steal their luggage either. Other nations were just frustrated that their best wasn't good enough
joshmania7 1 year ago
@joshmania7 I have heard more Canadians say the reffing was bad the Soviets actually. You say all those countries but what do they have in common? They hated us. Who in the world other then the Soviet's wanted us to win? No one pretty much.
Sweden Finland and America all wanted us dead, they had more reasons then Canadians to want us to lose.
Josef Kompalla was a bad person to bring up, his reffing was horrible. I could have done better then that.
Potts132 1 year ago
@Potts132 Of course Kompalla's reffing was horrible! He seemed to help the Soviets out a fair bit during the final games in the Summit series though, didn't he? Look at the penalties in games 6 and 8! For some strange reason, he made it into the IIHF hall of fame too. Weird
My point is, he certainly supported the Soviet team. And believe me, the Swedes and the Fins hated Canada as much as USSR because of our rough style of play. Pretty much everyone in Europe wanted to see us defeated.
joshmania7 1 year ago
@joshmania7 Yes, I can admit he was a terrible ref, when we say that other reffs are horrible we get attacked for"making excuses" but it's not an excuse when you use it.
Wanted to see you defeated, yes, did you get defeated all the time in those days yes. They both had more to hate us for then you. We are not the most liked people in the world. Although I love Canadians (: Great people

AND WE STILL WON!!!!!! WEEEEEEEEEE!!!

yahh suck on that
wasuphommieg 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong, the Russian team is capable of beating Canada in any given game (because of those potent top two lines), but Canada all around is BY FAR the top country in the world. Over 50 percent of NHL players are Canadian, roughly 50 percent of all first round draft picks are Canadian and no country produces the sheer number of effective players as Canada does. You wish you have the depth at defense that we do.
guitarpj 2 years ago
It's actually funny to see you delusional Soviet idiots claim that Russia's hockey team is better than Canada's... ARE YOU KIDDING??? Take a look at the depth chart idiots! I will be the first to admit that Russia's top two lines are the most potent in the world. But the fact of the matter is that Canada could field two to three olympic teams of the same caliber as the single Russian team. Your defense is a shambles, and with Nabokov as your top goaltender I think you have a good ways to go.
guitarpj 2 years ago
Soviets win so many Olympic Gold's because they cheated and used pros. You really think those guys playing for the Red Army and the Central Red Army aren't pro's? The only people who actually believed they were Army officers who played hockey in their spare time were members of the IOC. It was so ridiculous that Canada & Sweden for a time refuse to enter teams into the tournament.
Canada couldn't even send Jr. B players during that time because under Olympic rules they were professionals.

Canada = 9 olympic golds

9 golds in 82 years.. or 9 golds in 19 appearances
49.8%
7 golds in 32 years.. or 7 golds in 9 appearances
77.8%
Plus 1 gold for the unified team which was the CCCP team so basically 8 golds in 10 appearances or 80%.
do math, CCCP is logically is superior :)
Tantalis77 2 years ago
probably should of proof read :P but all my numbers are correct and that's what matters most.
Tantalis77 2 years ago
useing percentages?? lol, fuck you are desperate. i'll stick with the actual number of titles as would anyone who wasnt completely desperate like yourself. Canada has the most golds making them the greatest. anyway if Canadian NHLers were in the olympics in the 60s,70s and 80s. russia wouldnt have 2 golds and you know it. the Canada cups proved that.
Love4SK 2 years ago
percentages = easy to do. sorry if u don't understand.
Tantalis77 2 years ago
i actually found out something interesting..Canada has 9 golds including the 2 from the womens..so as far as mens hockey goes..tie 7 to 7, and if u include the unified team that's 8 to 7. :) Im not sure if womens hockey should even count due to CCCP never having a womens team.
Tantalis77 2 years ago
Then u might as well consider britains gold a Canadian gold seeing as the team was entirly Canadian WW2 soldiers. the soviet union isnt a country anymore so Russia today has 0 golds.
Love4SK 2 years ago
right you are. We can argue about who is better all day and I can guarantee neither one of us will be swayed in the others direction. So instead of this nonsense I think we can both agree on how they both were exceptionally amazing and that there will never be a rivalry even close to Canada vs CCCP in anysport :).
Tantalis77 2 years ago
agreed, last few years the media (mostly american) have been hyping the Usa , Canada rivalry as a big deal (esp. since 2002) but it will never compare to the pedigree and intensity of Russian taking on Canadian on ice. i watch game 8 every once in a while and its a mindf@ck how intense it was.

These 2 countries both dominate hockey with both completly different styles.. and theyre both the best at their style...

when soviet was strong their hockey was best in world, everybody love them, their were best, and that is truth

I see, this is how Russia rewrites history. Do you do it in all your school textbooks too?
You didn't show the winning goal by Paul Henderson!
I wonder why.

We had our major taste of humble pie in 1972. We won, by the skin of our teeth and learned a lot.

Nobody on the internet is THAT stupid.
....wait, maybe there are some....

If Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull had played in the 72 Summit Series nobody outside of Russia would even know who Valery Kharlamov is, sorry, Canada wins every game.

Igor72 is correct about the inferior CBC propaganda.
It's nothing compared to the genius of this Russian revisionist fairy tale. Very well spun Igor.
But may I remind you the Red Army won 3 games,
One game was tied.
Team Canada won 4 games, including the final game with 34 seconds on a goal by PAUL HENDERSON
HE SCORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
