The fact that believers believe it may not all be so literal seems a good thing to me. Although it negates any attempts to blame violence on them based on what's written in the good book. They clearly don't follow the book in all matters, so we can't simply point to the book and say, "See, this is what they believe!" Well, unless it's particularly convenient to the argument at the time.
Basic knowledge of history, and pre-history doesn't hurt either. It's fascinating how much we know about people tens of thousands of years ago from their rubbish alone. Archeology is basically going through the rubbish of long dead people, not Indiana Jones mystical crap. If you want that, be a dumb journalist, not a scientist. I know more about the history of history, or writing things down, than most can remember. Writing was necessary for bureaucracy, so it was developed.

I couldn't be an atheist without also being educated, i.e. having basic knowledge of the natural sciences. I may have a soft spot for astronomy, but that requires maths, physics, relativity, and quantum theory. Biology requires that too, physics, chemistry and biochemistry. It all comes together into knowledge of reality.

Hitchens gets forgiveness so wrong-it does NOT mean that you are not responsible for what you did, nor does it entail God saying "You didn't do it". That's not forgiveness of sins, in a Biblical sense, entails. As for Genesis and the creation story-it should go without saying that the Hebrew word for "Day" can be longer then a 24 hour period. The points of the story are that we were created by God, giving meaning and dignity to our lives, and that we have all rebelled against Him.

The Jewish creation myth is similar to other creation myths around the world but differs in that the Jewish tradition entails a 'fall' of man, whereas the other myths tell of man being freed from being bound by a god or nature.

The "Nothing" part summarized the current understanding of vacuum, quantum fluctuations, virtual particles, and what the current theories are about the universe coming from nothing.
As time goes on, this understanding will change/improve. But I still highly recommend the documentary, so that you know our _current_ state of knowledge.

Look into the things that are happening in quantum particle theory (the god particle), look into mathematical certainty of the unknown (kurt godel). Basic knowledge of history, and pre-history doesn't hurt either. It's fascinating how much we know about people tens of thousands of years ago from their rubbish alone. Archeology is basically going through the rubbish of long dead people, not Indiana Jones mystical crap. If you want that, be a dumb journalist, not a scientist. I know more about the history of history, or writing things down, than most can remember. Writing was necessary for bureaucracy, so it was developed.

I couldn't be an atheist without also being educated, i.e. having basic knowledge of the natural sciences. I may have a soft spot for astronomy, but that requires maths, physics, relativity, and quantum theory. Biology requires that too, physics, chemistry and biochemistry. It all comes together into knowledge of reality.

Hitchens gets forgiveness so wrong-it does NOT mean that you are not responsible for what you did, nor does it entail God saying "You didn't do it". That's not forgiveness of sins, in a Biblical sense, entails. As for Genesis and the creation story-it should go without saying that the Hebrew word for "Day" can be longer then a 24 hour period. The points of the story are that we were created by God, giving meaning and dignity to our lives, and that we have all rebelled against Him.

The "Nothing" part summarized the current understanding of vacuum, quantum fluctuations, virtual particles, and what the current theories are about the universe coming from nothing.

Two infact, add a man for the females too, or are they even worthy that? Without the "sinning" there are no people left for god to punish, and that wouldn't be fun for him wouldn't it?

GOD TAKES NO PLEASURE IN THE DEATH OF THE WICKED. He is not willing that any perish but that all come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9. This is why God has given a “mandate” to all Christians to go into all the world and spread the Gospel. It isn’t God’s will that any should perish. God doesn’t send anyone to Hell the same way a righteous Judge doesn’t delight in sending anyone to prison or sentence them to DEATH. The criminal’s crime sends him to prison. The Judge merely executes JUSTICE.

@Keitaro2011 ....we are ALL born with a SIN NATURE. That means we will always struggle with sin but through Jesus Christ...HE ALONE can remove that desire to sin from us. Does that mean we will never be angry or depressed or hurt or doubtful (all sins). Of course not. Christ can however remove our addiction to pornography, homosexuality, fornication, lying, stealing, etc.
