Its true he competed with 5 hall of famers but the thing is out of dem 3 already passed their career peak points by 1993/4 lendl becker edberg they were 29/30 then so the remaining were agassi and courier and he was better than them he is one of d greatest tennis players no doubt but is he d bst its arguable and a player name Federer will always come in that arguement
I would think Pete on old faster surface would beat Federer. Guys Pete had to beat to win slams or lost to in the process include legends like Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Agassi, Courier, etc. During later part of career, competition got easier, but during early to mid 90s, Petes competition was way more versatile and tougher than Federer's. Just look up his and Federer's record against Rafter, Kefelnikov, or even Tim Henman who had all court game instead of just baseline grinding.
@nocode61 Bullshit. Rafter was mentally weak. I mean, come on, here's a guy who lost to Ivanisevic in five sets in the final of Wimbledon.... give me a fucking break. Becker, Edberg and Lendl were at the end of their careers in the early 90's, WAY past their primes. Kafelnikov was mainly a clay court player, and Henman was such a disappointment he is not even worth mentioning. Agassi and Courier were great players, but so are Nadal and Djokovic. In fact, they're better. By far.
Yeah , I absolutely agree with the statement about Hewitt and the 2002 US Open ! Hewitt's game was definitely better suited for Sampras' than that of Andre Agassi !In addition , I sort of felt that Hewitt wasn't expecting Agassi to play so well against him and therefore wasn't ready for a big fight in the semifinal ! :D :D
@djstony1 are you retarded or something, bro? when were you born, 2008? do you even know that federer's role model IS sampras - do you even know anything about tennis?
@djstony1 YOU HAVE IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE REASON WHY FEDERER WON SO MUCH IS BECAUSE HE HAD NO COMPETITION UNTIL NADAL AND THAT RUSSIAN GUY CAME ALONG. NOW HE LOSES ALL THE TIME. PETE BEAT GREAT VERSITLE PLAYERS LIKE IVANESAVIC, AGASSI, COURIER, CHANG, SAFIN, BECKER,LENDL, RAFTER ETC. HE IS THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME.
Sampras got lucky in us open 2002. If hewitt had beaten Agassi in semi final (like he should have done) he would have taken care of pete in final. lleyton always had the key to beating sampras
You forget that Pete win 14 majors in 11years when Federer win 15 in 7 years!! well it's not finish! Federer can win some others majors! He has also an olympic gold medal in duo; And it's true that the swiss team is not very good even of federer win all of his match in davis cup. I like both but i think federer is more dominating than Pete.
@carlotta009 Federer did it in less time because he has no competition, only Federer has a rival named Nadal, and suffer Rdocik makes 5 sets, when I beat Sampras in just 3 ... ssets
I used to think Pete had the best service package of all time (1st and 2nd serve). But now I feel that Ivo Karlovic and CHris Guccionne are probably better. Does anyone agree??
Unfornately thats all these other players have, Pete has so so much more, Pete's definitely my most favourite player of all time.
my personal belief,is that the sampras-federer debate will go on until federer wins the davis cup. everyone says that federer is better because pete never won a french open. well he won two davis cups, which is a void on federer's resume
if people can criticize tiger woods for his poor performances in the ryder cup, it's certainly fair to criticize federer's lack of results in davis cup play (though it's tougher to win a davis cup when he and wawrinka don't have much help )
Winning major's is 100% down to your own input; winning the DC requires a strong team! Pete had Chang, Courier, Agassi in his team, its like the whose-who of tennis! like you say Federer has Stan who can be a patchy player...so its only right that Pete gets a bigger stick for not winning RG than Roger not winning the DC!
Tiger Woods comparison in the RC is poor
'cause Tiger plays poorly , the US can still win, But Roger plays great in DC & Switzerland still lose.
Pete is an all time great, but dont compare his to Federer.. federer took the game to new levels and in their prime Federer would kill him over and over again
Fed has had a tougher rival in Nadal than Andre was for Pete who could never beat him in big finals, as for the rest.... are the krajicek's, pioline, ivanisevic, courier's of the game any better than safin, hewitt, roddick, philippoussis, nalbandian's of this era? not imo
pete lost to agassi at AO 95 final and 2000 semi final. and others master series tournament but it's sure that pete was psychologically strong champion then agassi
Hewitt-Roddick-Safin all inconsistent well at least Hewitt had injuries in his case. The other two don't have titles. (Mark Phili-and David)
And the 90's still had Becker-Lendl-Kuerten-Edberg.
Federer getting dominated by Nadal doesn't help that much either to me plus hes still like 4 years younger and 2 years after Fed already had a number of titles. Novak-Tsonga-Murray all to me just came along like last year (or around 2007 for Novak)
@TheMirren81 Do you call rival nadal? and what the fuck is Kuerten Agassi Ivanisevic Becker Lendl, now there are only players who can hit the ball hard and care about in one pass, there is only background players expect the other makes a mistake, your comment is ridiculous and subjective But Federer is an excellent player of the same level as Pete, but with another game idea and it does not do better than him, "or someone is better than you for thinking differently?,--GOOGLE TRANSLATE
Humbleness, that's why Pete is CURRENTLY the best of all time, despite the phoney winning 15 majors against radically inferior opportents than in Pete day. Pete, you are the BEST! Courier and Agassi, also humble, also greats.
Dude throw federer and this whole generation of top 5 players of 2000against Pete and the top 5 of the 90's they'd all be playing for spots outside the top ten.
Sampras was the best of his era, that is a fact. However, I don't think he would excel with the players and type of game today. With the upgrade in racquet techonology, fitter players who can play in all surfaces, he would struggle. Also, the grass courts today are much slower than they were when Pete played. No disrespect to Pistol Pete though, one of the all time greats! Thanks for the upload!
Not much has changed in racquet technology....Federer's 90" Ksix-one hits the same as Pete's 85" Pro-Staff. The only thing different would be racquet-head size..which some are using for mainly spin, such as Rafa's 110".
The Grass courts may start out slower..but towards the end of the tournament, Centre Court looks just as trashed as it always does...so the ball flies faster at the end of the tournament.
