Lil Wayne, Drake, Dj Khaled, Mac Miller..... These guys are the only problems with hip hop
Rick Ross goes harder than most of these guys; Lyrical Content does matter, obviously, however talent is not only found in lyrics. The ability to make good sounding, entertaining music is a huge deal, whether you dislike that or not. Thats what music is about, hearing something that pleases you, individually, fuck what others think.
@Pavelski08 The way I judge hip hop is by the subject matter, and their technical abilities in flipping, bending and manipulating words and syllables to form complex rhymes. Rick Ross boasts about his wealth, the drugs he supposedly sells and his sex life, while doing it in such a simplified and uncreative way. He's definitely not worth the money or fame he has.

Music is entertainment, a release from reality of sorts. It's no wonder that commercial hip hop is so successful.
Right or wrong, it is what it is; and the minute you associate (or explain) a genre's (or an "artist's") success with a disparity in age, you have already lost the battle.
Hip hop SHOULD be about social commentary and the disparity between the "haves" and "the have nots". When it fails to live up to that ideal, then there is a greater question at hand...
yes this kind of reminds me of a line Kanye said "If I talk about God my record won't get played" yes mainstream doesn't want philosophers, they want money, drugs and women.
@oOoleveloOo No they don't want Christian rhetoric. Nothing Kanye can say about "god" is going to enlighten anyone. It's more to protect Kanye from himself.
@oOoleveloOo Kanye talks about God all the time... This is what I never understood about this dude. Does he look at his lyrics? Does he look at his albums sales?
@sylverpanther maybe so, maybe so. haha. but it is true. Philosophy is too hard to comprehend for an audience whose majority is made up of uneducated people.
So, wait. We should embrace the glorification of violence and misogyny?
See, this is why I can't respect people who defend hiphip; because you can't bring yourself to totally reject and repudiate the disgusting elements of the genre. Why do you have to tolerate the disgusting?
@mistaspot1 I'm pretty sure that last part after "in 2011 there's a demographic for it all" was sarcastic. I just watched a video where he (correctly) mocks the idea that Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive. He made a sarcastic closing statement as well, "Hip-hop isn't about expressing yourself, it's about not thinking." This video is intended to expose the difference between real emcees who represent the hip-hop culture, and the mainstream morons that continue to defame a beautiful culture.
@mistaspot1 d.respect closes this video with the cookie-cutter response that most mindless followers of mainstream culture would come up with when this topic is brought up "Hey, there's different music for everyone, especially in hip-hop (it's a large state) You like what you like (thought-provoking emcees), and I'll like what I like (drugs, misogyny, violence)." It's meant to sound ridiculous, not to tolerate the disgusting, but to mock the people who blindly worship mainstream "hip-pop"
@mistaspot1 And on a final note, when you bring up people who defend hip-hop, I hope you mean defend "mainstream hip-hop". I put that in quotes because most followers of real hip-hop (now unfortunately, and unjustly called "underground hip-hop") wouldn't even call the shit they hear on the radio "hip-hop" because they know the roots, the history, and the culture behind the term. So regarding people who defend mainstream hip-hop: I agree, no respect. But regarding people who defend and rep...
@mistaspot1 ... real hip-hop, I have to show nothing BUT respect. I bring this up because i feel you're sort of blending the two groups together which would offend a lot of real emcees, bboys, djs, artists, etc. I'm not doing this to lash out, I'm just posting this for people interested in absorbing and learning about the culture. After hearing real hip-hop, you have to respect the genre, perhaps you won't make it your genre of choice, but you do have to respect it.
@mistaspot1 Real emcees are socially conscious, literate, articulate, creative, honest, unique, and, on a lyrical level, leagues past mainstream fools. I know I made this a long post but I don't want people taking away the wrong message from a really well made video. If you care to hear real hip-hop listen to "Reality Check" and "Honest Expression" by Binary Star. They do a real good job touching on the topics I mentioned in previous posts. Hope this shed some light on this topic.
@kimyoungjin I blended the two together, because he did. If he was being sarcastic, then it's my fault for not catching on, but if he wasn't, then that's the mentality I have a problem with. I just feel like fans of Real Hip-Hop (as you call it) need to be more ruthless in their regard for the mainstream crap. It needs to be made fun of more. I mean, I know real hip-hop is all serious and shit, but seriously, rip it a new asshole through mockery and ridicule.
@soopersogood true true to some extent. labels in todays music industry are mainly used for marketing and distribution. however at the same time with all of the internet and popularity of free mixtapes the people have way more power than in the past. For example, Drake. Who is featured in this video. He released So Far Gone as a free album. His rise to the top was not created by the labels. It was accomplished through the quality of his music
@lanlan11777 Maybe that's true for the rise but what about his current position? Ever seen that terrible sprite commercial featuring him? Its just one example, but hiphop artists are all selling out to using their fame to endorse products and help advertisers. Hip Hop as turned from being about getting out of the ghettos and surviving it into keeping others down in it.
@lanlan11777 The fans are being told what is cool. The artists no longer have self-respect, or respect for their fans. Saying "make your own money" is just what's wrong with the industry. IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT MONEY. But that's all they care about now. Their raps are just brags about how rich and extravagant they are. The masses are stupid. D. Respect knows this, and is shedding light on it.
@TheArchZodiac J. Cole got absolutely fucked by his label by pushing his album back so much. He does not owe his success to the label machine. He sold over 270,000 first week. He doesn't spend his time rapping about money and hoes. So I am just confused at what all of you "hip hop" heads are trying to accomplish here. You guys have no solid backing. It just seems like jealousy. Dont be mad that these rappers are enjoying success. They are not forcing anyone to buy their records.
@lanlan11777 The video specifically talked about guys like that. The problem is that the majority of popular rappers aren't like that. Kanye West, Drake, T-Pain, Flo Rida, and those guys who are selling the most music simply sing about women, sex, and moneymoneymoney.
There are thought provoking artists out there that are successful still, but they aren't the top sellers anymore. That's what's wrong. Maybe the listeners are stupid, but that doesn't make a stupid rapper like Lil Wayne any better
@TheArchZodiac you guys really just dont get itHave you listened to the College Dropout or So Far Gone or Guerilla Warfare? What about Marvins Room by Drake? Im pretty sure they are not talking about money and hoes. How is Wayne a stupid rapper? Just because he cleverly puts words together that is unparalled by most. I read a book or watch a speech when I want some superior enlightenment. Why is there so much pressure on rappers to teach you a damn lesson? You are so shallow with the thinking.
@lanlan11777 unparalleled by most is a bit of an overstatement bro. moving on there isn't pressure on rappers to teach lessons, there is pressure to represent what they come from, which in a lot of cases is hell. rap started out as the common mans outlet. now its become a fantasy world. what people should say instead of you suck your music is garbage, is dude you're rapping about shit that 99% of us don't understand but we dream about. there are people that like that and that's why its popular
@mosily1313 continued... but the people who like concious and underground rap are saying dude i don't wanna hear about how sick your life is, i want people to hear about how shitty mine and people like mine our. anyway you look at it its all peoples self centered interest, people who like main stream dream that that will be them one day with all eyes on them, the rest want you to see how shitty their life is. this is my opinion at leeast.
@lanlan11777 Okay, I really can't take you seriously anymore.
Lil Wayne's #1 single in his career: Lollipop.
Give me one thoughtful line.
Nope. I didn't think so.
The guy claims to be a Christian too, which is totally not hypocritical, right?
So sure, his lyrics are sometimes clever, and his beats are enjoyable, but every song with lyrics has a message dude, don't try to claim that they don't, and more often than not (IN THE MOST POPULAR SONGS) they totally SUCK.
@TheArchZodiac whats the chorus of one of biggie's biggest songs? fuck bitches get money. whats one of tupacs biggest songs? i get around. What are the themes of Nas and Jay-Z's most classic albums? violence. Get outta here with that underground hip hop bullshit
@lanlan11777 because when they dropped thier classic albums, they were still pretty much living in the hood. They grew up with that. LIsten to thier previous albums.
@TheArchZodiac What thee.....Kanye west? you realize he's a concious rapper too right? i mean thats why talib kweli and mos def have songs with him. Name one song that kanye brags about wealth... exactly
@pLaNbAKeR922 If you sample your music, the song isn't original. It's not his music, just his lyrics. Sometimes he stays true to the original song, which isn't original but is okay. I don't understand how he can be considered a great artist if just turns an old classic into a rap.
@TheArchZodiac If you think its unoriginal and easy to sample another song and turn it in to a beat I'd like to see you try it out. Sure some people do really lazy copy and paste type sampling such as I'll Be Missing You by P Diddy but to do the type of intricate sampling Kanye does takes a lot of musical talent and skill. He's taking one little snippet of another song and flipping it around into something completely new that is his creation. Think of the sample as a musical chord:
@TheArchZodiac (continued): Many people have played a C-minor chord on a piano before, but if you write a song containing that chord its not unoriginal, you're just using it in your own way. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a producer myself who sometimes uses samples, but I'm tired of people bashing a type of music creation that deserves just as much credit as anything else
Started out well, until you revealed that your favourite mcs are tyler the creator and hopsin (who I dont mind... but come on dude). Dissing 50 and eminem is also not on
The problem is not what the mainstream rappers rap about, its how they do it, they're too soft.

yes this kind of reminds me of a line Kanye said "If I talk about God my record won't get played" yes mainstream doesn't want philosophers, they want money, drugs and women.

So, wait. We should embrace the glorification of violence and misogyny?
See, this is why I can't respect people who defend hiphip; because you can't bring yourself to totally reject and repudiate the disgusting elements of the genre. Why do you have to tolerate the disgusting?
mistaspot1 4 months ago
@mistaspot1 I'm pretty sure that last part after "in 2011 there's a demographic for it all" was sarcastic. I just watched a video where he (correctly) mocks the idea that Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive. He made a sarcastic closing statement as well, "Hip-hop isn't about expressing yourself, it's about not thinking." This video is intended to expose the difference between real emcees who represent the hip-hop culture, and the mainstream morons that continue to defame a beautiful culture.
kimyoungjin 4 months ago
@mistaspot1 d.respect closes this video with the cookie-cutter response that most mindless followers of mainstream culture would come up with when this topic is brought up "Hey, there's different music for everyone, especially in hip-hop (it's a large state) You like what you like (thought-provoking emcees), and I'll like what I like (drugs, misogyny, violence)." It's meant to sound ridiculous, not to tolerate the disgusting, but to mock the people who blindly worship mainstream "hip-pop"
kimyoungjin 4 months ago
@mistaspot1 And on a final note, when you bring up people who defend hip-hop, I hope you mean defend "mainstream hip-hop". I put that in quotes because most followers of real hip-hop (now unfortunately, and unjustly called "underground hip-hop") wouldn't even call the shit they hear on the radio "hip-hop" because they know the roots, the history, and the culture behind the term. So regarding people who defend mainstream hip-hop: I agree, no respect. But regarding people who defend and rep...
kimyoungjin 4 months ago
@mistaspot1 ... real hip-hop, I have to show nothing BUT respect. I bring this up because i feel you're sort of blending the two groups together which would offend a lot of real emcees, bboys, djs, artists, etc. I'm not doing this to lash out, I'm just posting this for people interested in absorbing and learning about the culture. After hearing real hip-hop, you have to respect the genre, perhaps you won't make it your genre of choice, but you do have to respect it.
kimyoungjin 4 months ago
@mistaspot1 Real emcees are socially conscious, literate, articulate, creative, honest, unique, and, on a lyrical level, leagues past mainstream fools. I know I made this a long post but I don't want people taking away the wrong message from a really well made video. If you care to hear real hip-hop listen to "Reality Check" and "Honest Expression" by Binary Star. They do a real good job touching on the topics I mentioned in previous posts. Hope this shed some light on this topic.
kimyoungjin 4 months ago 3
@kimyoungjin I blended the two together, because he did. If he was being sarcastic, then it's my fault for not catching on, but if he wasn't, then that's the mentality I have a problem with. I just feel like fans of Real Hip-Hop (as you call it) need to be more ruthless in their regard for the mainstream crap. It needs to be made fun of more. I mean, I know real hip-hop is all serious and shit, but seriously, rip it a new asshole through mockery and ridicule.
I'll def check out those tracks.

lanlan11777 4 months ago
@lanlan11777 Not necessarily, labels choose who they like, and invest money in them and put them on a pedestal for you to like.
soopersogood 4 months ago
@soopersogood true true to some extent. labels in todays music industry are mainly used for marketing and distribution. however at the same time with all of the internet and popularity of free mixtapes the people have way more power than in the past. For example, Drake. Who is featured in this video. He released So Far Gone as a free album. His rise to the top was not created by the labels. It was accomplished through the quality of his music
lanlan11777 4 months ago
@lanlan11777 Maybe that's true for the rise but what about his current position? Ever seen that terrible sprite commercial featuring him? Its just one example, but hiphop artists are all selling out to using their fame to endorse products and help advertisers. Hip Hop as turned from being about getting out of the ghettos and surviving it into keeping others down in it.
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@lanlan11777 The fans are being told what is cool. The artists no longer have self-respect, or respect for their fans. Saying "make your own money" is just what's wrong with the industry. IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT MONEY. But that's all they care about now. Their raps are just brags about how rich and extravagant they are. The masses are stupid. D. Respect knows this, and is shedding light on it.
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@TheArchZodiac J. Cole got absolutely fucked by his label by pushing his album back so much. He does not owe his success to the label machine. He sold over 270,000 first week. He doesn't spend his time rapping about money and hoes. So I am just confused at what all of you "hip hop" heads are trying to accomplish here. You guys have no solid backing. It just seems like jealousy. Dont be mad that these rappers are enjoying success. They are not forcing anyone to buy their records.
lanlan11777 4 months ago
@lanlan11777 The video specifically talked about guys like that. The problem is that the majority of popular rappers aren't like that. Kanye West, Drake, T-Pain, Flo Rida, and those guys who are selling the most music simply sing about women, sex, and moneymoneymoney.
There are thought provoking artists out there that are successful still, but they aren't the top sellers anymore. That's what's wrong. Maybe the listeners are stupid, but that doesn't make a stupid rapper like Lil Wayne any better
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@TheArchZodiac you guys really just dont get itHave you listened to the College Dropout or So Far Gone or Guerilla Warfare? What about Marvins Room by Drake? Im pretty sure they are not talking about money and hoes. How is Wayne a stupid rapper? Just because he cleverly puts words together that is unparalled by most. I read a book or watch a speech when I want some superior enlightenment. Why is there so much pressure on rappers to teach you a damn lesson? You are so shallow with the thinking.
lanlan11777 4 months ago
@lanlan11777 unparalleled by most is a bit of an overstatement bro. moving on there isn't pressure on rappers to teach lessons, there is pressure to represent what they come from, which in a lot of cases is hell. rap started out as the common mans outlet. now its become a fantasy world. what people should say instead of you suck your music is garbage, is dude you're rapping about shit that 99% of us don't understand but we dream about. there are people that like that and that's why its popular
mosily1313 4 months ago
@mosily1313 continued... but the people who like concious and underground rap are saying dude i don't wanna hear about how sick your life is, i want people to hear about how shitty mine and people like mine our. anyway you look at it its all peoples self centered interest, people who like main stream dream that that will be them one day with all eyes on them, the rest want you to see how shitty their life is. this is my opinion at leeast.
mosily1313 4 months ago
@mosily1313 Conscious rap doesn't have to be about how shitty your life is, don't get it twisted.

@pLaNbAKeR922 Really? How many songs of his are even original?
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@TheArchZodiac umm all of them? he revolutionized soul sampling and actually raps about something. get outta here
pLaNbAKeR922 4 months ago
@pLaNbAKeR922 If you sample your music, the song isn't original. It's not his music, just his lyrics. Sometimes he stays true to the original song, which isn't original but is okay. I don't understand how he can be considered a great artist if just turns an old classic into a rap.
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@TheArchZodiac This just proves you know nothing of hip hop. Mostly everything in hip hop is sampled. Dont be so ignorant.
pLaNbAKeR922 4 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@pLaNbAKeR922 Everything now is. You just proved my point dumbass.
TheArchZodiac 4 months ago
@TheArchZodiac If you think its unoriginal and easy to sample another song and turn it in to a beat I'd like to see you try it out. Sure some people do really lazy copy and paste type sampling such as I'll Be Missing You by P Diddy but to do the type of intricate sampling Kanye does takes a lot of musical talent and skill. He's taking one little snippet of another song and flipping it around into something completely new that is his creation. Think of the sample as a musical chord:
killinginthenam617 1 month ago
@TheArchZodiac (continued): Many people have played a C-minor chord on a piano before, but if you write a song containing that chord its not unoriginal, you're just using it in your own way. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a producer myself who sometimes uses samples, but I'm tired of people bashing a type of music creation that deserves just as much credit as anything else
killinginthenam617 1 month ago
That's why I have no respect for anyone who listens and enjoys listening to the mainstream radio.
