You do need a kick box when using anything other than the ION pedal that the ION set comes with. The ION pedal is not PIEZO trigger it is just a simple on and off switch. IOn was quite stupid about this as all the other pads are... So when using a GHWT pedal or a KD8 or any other real electronic drum trigger you need a Converter box
(KICKBOX) in my case for this video the ION EXPANDER has a kickbox built in.
THE DM5 Kit (without the DM5 module) can be used with a Kick box or IOn Expander.
If you want to use the DM5 module - then just hack up a GHWT box and use the MIDI out on your DM5 to the MIDI IN on the GHWT drumset or make it a stand alone box (see my other video for GHWT CUSTOM BOX). Lastly you can get a ION EXPANDER MIDI TOO. Videos for that coming very soon.
Hi, can i please ask, when the plugs are in the alesis d5 brain, do you have to take the cords out and put them back in the original drum module for it to work in rock band/guitar hero?
I do not have to - that is the point of the EXPANDER - it lets you THROUGH to both brains so it's a one time hookup and a hassle free way to play both ways.
What's the ACTUAL name of the module you're using? Also, a link to where I could buy one would be appreciated. I've already searched on Google for the expander with limited results.
He is using the Alesis DM5. For the price I would buy a Yamaha DTXPress IV or the cheaper Yamaha DTXPlorer. The Yamaha's have a better sound than the Alesis.
I chris first of all thanks for this video, it's very helpfull for a newbe like me ;)
I'd try to find the ION EXPENDER but i didn't find it... maybe i'm stupid but cood you give me a internet web site where i can find it? thanks a lot man and keep continue
iT'S CALLED A DRUM BRAIN accoding to the product manager at Alesis and or ION. SO call it a module if you want - just don;t come here telling me on my page what to call something when according to the industry I am using the correct language.
While manufacturers such as Roland use "Percussion Sound Module", such a term only describes a subset of the device's functions. "Drum brain" is a term used by drummers, equipment sellers, and other industry professionals to be more descriptive. The term "drum brain" is used to denote the fact that its primary function is to act as the central logic device within an electronic drum kit.
How much does your pedal system go for? I'm looking to get a double bass, seeing as they allow it now in Scorehero & what not. I just wanna know a basic estimate on how much an electric bass drum would go for. Message me the answer, if you could.
so i have a question for you. I have the ion drum rocker for PS3 and I want to use my ion on ghwt and gh metallica and be able to use my cymbals. Does the J5 allow me to do this?

lol your kit would look a lot bigger if you "truly" tried to match what the 4 lanes stand for.
4 Hi Hats, 2 Snares, 4 toms, 3 Ride/Crash ^^
Thats 2 Red, 4 Yellow, 4 Blue and 4 Green. Total of 14 pieces (Even more if you address high/low toms).
Sticking to GH would be easier on your kit.
1 Hi Hat, 2 Crash, 1 Ride, 1 Snare, 2 High Toms, 2 Low Toms
Thats 1 Red, 2 Yellow, 2 blue, 2 Orange and 2 Green. Total of 9 pieces (7 if you only count 2 toms).

I got the Alesis DM5 2 weeks ago. For me it works just fine. I am, however, exploring some more options.
