ok this is really stupid! you are getting even less oil out then you would by pulling the drain plug, and you still have to go under the car to change the filter. That is a horrible idea.
@onlyinajeep9740 Actually, the oil filter is top mounted so you don't have to lift the car or remove the sound deadening panel or replace the oil drain plug with a new one. Makes sense to me...
This is working smarter not harder.... I would annually change my oil traditionally maybe once a year but for the most part I own the topside and it easy.
Think of it this way; if you watch race cars and when they drive in the pit, nothing is done traditionally because its advance tools.
We need to start doing more advance methods for servicing our cars.
Just don't hate on innovational if your a traditional.
@timothy1573 Depends on your car. Mercedes, BMW and others have the oil filter under the hood. I change mine with an electric extractor that connects to the battery and unscrew the old and screw on the new filter. Whole process takes under 10 minutes and Mercedes dealer wants to charge over $100. Here is my video.
I prefer doing the oil change the old fashioned way... it's much faster - but a very dirty job nonetheless. I drive a diesel car and the oil is black (soot) so there is need for a shower afterwards but hey... its actually fun
no the first thing you need to do is warm the engine for 5 or 10 mins, this will make the oild thinner and flow faster, you can also put a compression type fitting on the tube and attach it tot the top of the pipe, this will pull the oil out of the engine as the dip stick pipe goes all the way to the bottom of the sump anyway, many garages use this type of oil change now, faster, cleaner and not having to deal with siezed simp plugs anymore, les hassle, this system works ok.
@jrd476 offcourse! when you do it the traditional way all the debris that has sunk on the bottom of the sump will come out as well. and you also get to inspect the sumpplug which often has a magnet in it that holds any metal shavings. (these shavings are a tell tail for bigger mechanical problems)
@bigjpyn Some Engines have the oil filter at the topside, like Audi V8s, still it won't take more than 2 min to lift the car, another min to screw the drainage, 2 min to drain the oil another min to screw it back and 1 min to lower the car back, that's 7 minutes, 10 if you not used to it, and with lifting the car from one side you'll make sure the oil pan is really empty, this method is more helpful with Auto-transmission oil.
The topsider required about 4-7 minutes to draw out the oil of a 5 quart car if the oil is hot. During this time you can change the filter or perform other service checks that are required on an oil service.

what happened to using gravity and getting under a car and changing the oil?
speeddomon407kmh 4 months ago
take the plug out and see how much more oil comes out this dont do justice

I would never change the oil this way even if it´s easier, cleaner, faster. etc.
Gravity will do a better job at draining -all- the oil plus metal chips from the engine than this method.

Um, don't you have to lift it for the oil filter?

that should work in Automatic Transmission as well, but for regular oil change it is useless

Wouldn't you agree the traditional method gets rid of more of the built up deposits?

This thing works beautifully on a car with a canister filter, such as a BMW.

Anything for maximum convenience, I suspect. ☺
On the other hand, a lazy man's oil change is still much better, than no oil change, or the one which is kept postponed again and again.

you have to go down to change the filter u minus well just drain it haha
