The HANS device being discussed is being worn in this accident, while it should provide some neck support, it's main purpose is to keep the drivers head in line with his body. Prevents his head from turning to the side during an accident and/or propelling far enough forward to hit the steering wheel. These limits help protect the driver from a basal skull fracture which is what killed Dale Earnhardt Sr.

But don't you think that seat belts must stretch at least a bit? would you not suffer from internal damage if you would hit something at high speed? of course they cant stretch that much because of the risk of falling out the seat when rolling but at least a bit?

@w8tfield Well, I did not follow the conversation. These seatbelt do stretch a bit, just a question of physic. Be careful do: the stretching is not like the one from a road cars: there is very little mechanism into it, and you could not move a lot in that.

A HANS device keeps the head from turning sideways and getting wiplash...wat your seing here is completel normal the seatbelts are stretching this just shows how much they stretch the reason dale earnhart died was because his belts stretched and he wasnt wearing a full face helmet and crushed his face on the steering wheel

im not sure but this should be 2002, that year salazar crashed heavily in a practice seisson with Airton Dare's car and he almost died. So Ray took his place at team foyt. I am pretty sure they didnt have hans those days.

The Hans device was around at that time, developed in the early 80's and on the market by the mid 90's. Dale Earnhardt refused to wear what he referred to as "that damn noose", and ultimately died from basilar skull fracture that might have been prevented by the HANS. At that time the HANS device was resisted by most drivers who felt it was too restrictive and uncomfortable.Earnhardt died in Feb. 2001 that same year F1,Cart,ARCA and NASCAR mandated use of either HANS or Hutchens device.
