Sonak was killed in the transporter. Kirk is talking to him before the transporter scene. The actor who played Xon was killed on the Space Station in STTMP as a scientist character when VGer assimilates it.
Entertaining discussion. However i want to point out that taking inflation at the box office into this. The ST:TMP grossed more at the box office then the Voyage Home.
The new series was to be called Star Trek 2. The Character of XON was to replace Spock. However they killed Xon in the first movie in a transporter accident.
You guys are on crack! Star Trek III was the best of the series in many ways. It was all about friendship. Kirk blows EVERYTHING for his friend! Christopher Lloyd was actually a pretty good villain too.
Actually, Leonard Nimoy wasn't going to be on the "Phase II" series because of legal differences he had w/ Paramount at the time (I believe over marketing). In Spock's place would've been a Vulcan character named Xon.
Actually, the Decker character (played by Stephen Collins of "7th Heaven" fame) was there as mainly a surrogate captain just in case William Shatner asked for too much money after the initial 13 episode order of "Phase II".
The Star Trek movies weren't that good, STMP was terrible Star Trek 2 was OK(but hollywoodish lightweight and melodramatic). ST 3 was boring. ST4 was fun, but light weight. ST5 was REALLY BAD!!!! And the only other won what was fun(Baut also light weight) was the one with the Borg. The last ST was forgettable and I forgot it 5 minutes after I walked out of the theater.
I disagree strongly with these guys about Star Trek 3 BEING unforgetable I think these guys don't realise the true essence of what the film is about is FRIENDSHIP and what would you do for you friend, the actions that you would take and the price you are willing to pay to help a friend. To me Star Trek 3 is the most personal of a the trek movies and one of the best so you guys are wrong very wrong
I think the popularity of IV is that the previous films were just SOOOO heavy. 1 was boring, 2 was a good comeback great story and acting, 3 is a bore as well. Two boring heavy films with only one good one. If the makers went heavy one more time the franchise would have died early. Comedy was the only way to go, just to be different from the other three films.
I just watched THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL dvd with commentary from Bob Wise and another Star Trek director, Nick Meyers (Star Trek 2 and 6), which was a great discussion over sci fi.
Great movie and a very good director...RIP: Robert Wise
What the hell is Mikes problem? It that all he talks about is racist stuff? He needs to show some respect to Jeff. Or maybe Jeff should just slap the shit out of him.
I've never understood the popularity of "The Voyage Home" - I've never liked it. It's just not funny, at all: Scotty talking into a computer mouse? "Double dumbass on you"? "Nuclear wessels"? Are you kidding me? And the whole "save the whales" aspect to the plot is absolutely lame - especially when you consider the fact that there are more humpback whales now in the 21st century (the time that the film states humpback whales went extinct) than in 1986.
Oh, re Botany Bay - it's also the name of the penal colony that the British built in Australia, hence its applicability to Khan and his men as marooned convicts.
Good show. Love Michael's Lloyd impression. What I remember from III was "I - have had - enough - of YOU!!!" IV sucked imo - fish out of water, 'comedy', set in today's world - I agree with Jeff: that's not what Star Trek is to me, and message films are a bore. One thing about II that was great is that it feels more like they're part of a military organization, the ship has parts and departments, there's more formality about their actions, and it feels more real.
If you haven't read it, I recommend William Shatner's STAR TREK MOVIE MEMORIES. He had some great stories on the making of the Star Trek films. One of the funniest he tells was about George Takei getting in a fight with Nimoy and Harve Bennett over his fight with the guard (The "Don't Call Me Tiny" moment).
Great book. Can't wait for Part 2 of this episode.
Great show you guys. As a Trek fan its always fun to hear what others think of the films, I agree with all your comments about the first 4 movies. Thanks Edwin for telling people that the Director's Cut of The Motion Picture is better, I couldn't agree more
My favorite Trek movies are Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, First Contact and Star Trek from this year. I like Search for Spock too, Its not perfect but its def not as apprecaited as it should be.Looking foward to Part 2!
Thank you. We decided to nerd it out for the last couple of tapings as we got some requests for Star Wars and Star Trek, so we decided to do them back to back to get them out of the way; however, it was a fun subject to tackle and edit, especially the opening credits.
The producer you were thinking of was Harve Bennett. By the by, Gene L. Coon wrote and produced some first season episodes of Wild Wild West before he went on to write and produce for Star Trek. Awesome show and keep up the great work! I can't wait for part 2!
First Contact was easily the best of the Next Generations films! That's mainly due to the fact that it felt like an "event" movie instead of an overblown episode like the later installments.
Great comments, especially about the first movie. It's sad that Ricardo Montalban is no longer with us. The greatest villain of Star Trek History. And Lord, was that Star Trek 4 poster goofy!!
Looking forward to hear what you guys thought of First Contact (the best Next Generation movie).
Personal Favorites: Star Trek 2, 4, and First Contact (* with Undiscovered Country a close fourth fav.)

Star Trek 1, the motionless picture. Silent Running is the model of all sci-fi films from 1972 on! How about alking about that?

As always very entertaining and I am looking forward to part II. Are you guys going to do all the Trek films or just the original series ones (I-VI)?

We'll be covering the entire series, including the newest one. It should be uploaded very soon.

Eddie Murphy was supposed to be a college professor.
P.S. Eric seems bored in this episode. Edwin is the dominant one.
