I'd also recommend Ghost Hunt (it's from the same author as Shiki), and Madoka Magica, which looks light and fluffy on the outside, but is actually one of the most brutal and disturbing series I've seen in a long time.

That might possibly be cause the two aren't... really related. One is a romance novel aimed at girls in puberty and the other is a horror anime (that probably has some novel origin, at least the storytelling style is very novel like).
