My only regret was I bought his tape as a present for someone else, and now I wish I had bought a copy for myself! I like his rendition of "Lock The Doors Larriston" best.
I have got to get this! Listened in childhood to Alastair McDonald but could never get his stuff -- the only cd I ever had was picked up by my dad on a business trip to Edinburgh. And now I find out he did music videos... !!!
Alisdair Macdonald released two excellent albums back in the 1970s called "Sottish Battle Songs" and "Scotland First". If anyone has copies, especially of "Scottish Battle Ballads", it would be appreciated if songs were posted here. I lost my copies somewhere and would love to hear republican songs like "Hush, Hush" and "Fireraisers" again.
@cosmicviper Too right. I grew up on Scottish Battle Ballads. Found your comment while searching for the songs on Youtube. My Dad still has the LP somewhere. Will see if I can sample it and post to Youtube. Crackin stuff. As you say, "Hush, Hush" and "Fireraisers" are songs far too good to be forgotten.
Too true, Willie! I also have the Velvet & Steel dvd, and a few of Alastair McDonald's cd's in fact - everything from jazz/gospel thru folk to comedy & kids songs! He's a pretty diverse sort of muso/entertainer. Plays other instruments, too. Know he's a bit of a household name in his native Scotland, but I only discovered his music a couple of years ago. So am sure hopin' there's a lot more to come! :-)
Bought this dvd on spec, about a year ago. And have been pleasantly surprised! Is worth getting just to watch Alastair McDonald's impeccable guitar fingering - SUPERB tone. Nice voice too. And quite a philosophical & entertaining take on Scottish history - not too heavy handed. I'm normally more into folk/blues/roots/world rather than "Scottish entertainment" as such. But this one's been a real find. Highly recommend.
