When I was 6/7yo the local TV station used this song among others (Weather Report and Passport, etc.) as filler, that is in Punta Arenas, Chile. That give or take was thirty years ago. I remember thinking then that there was a certain "nostalgic" vibe to something 'bout this song. I hear it differently now for several reasons, but that "nostalgic" vibe remains, go figure. Great post, thank you uploader.
It looks like the album came out in late 1980 (after Catching The Sun). I knew it couldn't be later than early 1981, as this song was used to help advertise for a Dallas TV station while its' subscription service played at night.
One of my favorite Jazz groups of all time and I grew up on them.. Sadly, and in my opinion, after the release of Carnival, that was the last of the best from them. When John Tropea left the group (their lead guitarist) shortly after the Morning Dance album, then Jeremy Wall after the Carnival release, they weren't the same anymore. Still though, Jay Beckenstein is one of the greatest sax artist ever.
@Tommy6860 I hear u. They had it goin on from the start and as time evolved they kinda fell off the wagon. However they did some good stuff that definitely put on the eternal map, like this one.
Spryo Gyra is a key that unlocks the door of good remembrance, and as that door opens the dark things are left and only light remains. This particular track is a car trip to the Panamanian countryside. Such sweetness!
@dal4018 I didn't really check the date, but I just looked at wiki and it said 1980. A lot of bands still had a strong disco hangover, and that says to me "70's". Anyway, the influence is definitely from the previous decade, and almost surly it was primarily written in the late 70's. But more importantly, to me personally, having grown up hearing music like this then in that time, I will always identify with it as such. Cheers to you and congratulations on your taste in music.
