Most of the continent are loco hauled it seems. France has extensive loco hauled services and the SBB (Switzerland) are primarily loco hauled too!
Nothing particularly wrong with loco hauling except for increased track wear and tear compared with EMU operation, though EMU's if they go wrong are more difficult to fix (loco hauled you just stick another loco on).
DB does use EMU's for the S-bahn services though and the ICE 3 are too. ICE1 and 2 are not EMU, they are loco hauled. =)
The definition of an EMU is one where there are multiple sources of motive power resulting in a distributed motive effort. The ICE1 and ICE2 (particularly ICE2 as it only has one power car) run as a push-pull system much like the TGV/Thalys/Intercity 125's rather than a true EMU.
The ICE 3, on the other hand, has distributed motive power throughout the length of the train, making it a true EMU.
Feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong though. =)
Agreed it's a complex issue, and thanks for subbing, but it's just like the HSTs in England - the powered vehicles couldn't go off and do other work, eg. pulling a rake of cargowaggons or sumat, so are "power cars"...also, to me, the number series is another key defining point.
In my mind they're still EMUs, even if they don't quite match any criteria properly.
DB is the best and this have a cool sound...

Yep, about half still are - and there's good reason for it; only the 'ICE' services are EMU-worked

ICE1 & ICE2 are also EMUs - check-out the 4xx/8xx-series numbering and the fact that the '401s & '402s are 'Power Cars' not locos
