Battle of attrition only works in set pieces. No doubt Long Tan was a decisive Anzac victory, the yanks never did really learn from these warriors of their experience fighting a indigenous war, like in Malaya. It cost the yanks the war.
i have the book called the battle of Long Tan. it is very chilling to know what these men went through in this battle. yet a miraculous victory as Sun Tzu said in his book the Art of War place you men on death ground and they will survive.
Firstly, a very big thank you to willytheekid for posting this great documentary on the battle of Long Tan, where once again Australia covered itself in glory. SBS actually showed this in 1996, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the battle. Watching this documentary makes you proud to be an Australian.
Another brilliant strategic effort by the US. New Zealand helped also directing US fire. The Australians were bogged down in an NVA trap and have to get urgent assistance. The US did not disappoint.
Without the NZ Artillery the Aussie troops would have been overrun in a flash. Those cannons ran hot to hold those VC back. Aussies and Kiwis were the greatest soldiers in Vietnam. They had jungle warfare experience from Borneo. Americans had nothing to draw experience from.
im an FO with the battalion the band of bros. is written after (the duce / cinco 0 sixth you guys may understand the gravity of the situation i just want to emphasise how much shit they were in, danger close is thought of as 75m but its actually 600 for mortars and typical arty. CALLING ROUNDS UP TO 75 FUCKING METERS! thats like were going to die, were taking them with us. im just glad i know my job.... you civillians and"brothers and sisters" in arms dont realise how hard and important a foward
oberservers job is. im going to afghanistan like next week...ish (opsec) but if i ever get in a situation like this lets just say that you may thinktheese guys are oldbut they are fucking badasses. especially the fo for having the nerve and confidence to callin a immediate suppression mission THAT close to them. i would pay just to shake his hand. Im US btw im looking foward to workingwith the aussies/brits. you guys are badasses.
this histroy should b teached at school instead of the shit we were feed wen i was at school,we have a proud histroy in war fair which we should no about(people no more about the yenks there instead of our own....the battle of long tan and others need telling, someone needs to make a band of brothers type film on this battle and let the vets know some off us are greatfull for there sacafise over there. any vet is always welcome at my table. stranger or not.
@SuperWeststigers I think you should have paid more attention at school. Taught not "teached". War fare not "war fair". know about not "no about". Yanks not "yenks". "of" not "off". "sacrifice" not "sacafise"
Australian soldiers swear loyalty ONLY to the Queen. Not to country, not to constitution or any other type of thing. This makes us more akin to the ENGLISH than the United States.
As for the comment re: American units, lsd's and radios. Both my father, and my uncle served in Vietnam in combat units. Bothsaid, the americans would have been less prone to KIA's if they showed some more professionalism.
Judging personally from over-seas on deployment with US forces, I'm inclined to agree.
Do us australians have the queens monarchy badge on our soldiers uniform? no. soon we will not be apart of the british commonwealth. those soldiers fought for THIER MATES. THE PEOPLE NEXT TO THEM. ANZAC LOYALTY AND BELEIFS IS TO FIGHT FOR THE BLOKE NEXT TO YOU. NO MATTER WHAT COLOUR SKIN, ACE OUR NATIONALITY. this is ones value and beleif that will never leave our soldiers hearts and minds.
Yes we do have the Queens 'badge', it's called the UNION JACK and it is found in the top left corner of the Australian flag, signifying our status as a member of HRM's Commonwealth.
All soldiers who fought and died in any war Australia as a nation has taken part in, have sworn an oath of loyalty to the Queen. Not to a constitution, or a country. This was my point.
Mateship is a big part of it, but your oath is inviolate. And those of who HAVE served, take it seriously.
i know vietnam vets and have heard a lot of their stories, i was told the us marines were piss weak cunts who were off their guts on drugs (LSD) and they also loved their music playin loud on patrols making it easy 4 the vc 2 find them. And i know my history because ive spent many years studying it as it has always been an interest.
Let us not forget the great American fighting men who saved Australia once again. Whenever diggers were in trouble, the GIs came in and helped. The Australian cousins, the English were nowehere.
America and Australia are like good brothers imo. We help each other out even if we don't really have to but because it is in our own self interest to do so.
True. The Australians and Americans have always been closer in fact. The English relationship with both countries is phoney. The English always act superior.
english always act superior?!?! you should listen to yourself mate. we didnt take part in this war and we never took any credit, but at least in ww2 we thanked you a lot and are still giving back money to you guys today. yeah you were good back then but you were a bit slobby if you know what i mean. Oh yh when you say English always act superior, think of what language your speaking.
We'll only become a Republic with [a] the Queens blessing - she has to give permission.. point of law there.. and [b] when the Republicans advocate a DEMOCRATIC Republic.
The 'Republic' model put forward to the Australian people, was for a GOVERNMENT ELECTED PRESIDENT.
That's totally contrary to the Australian way of life. Their model would have permitted for example, if Labor won the majority vote - would enable Labor to make Anna Bligh the President. Look what she's done to QLD...
So until Republicans stop trying to reintroduce the policy's used/espoused by the defunct Australian Communist Party [were first to suggest a government elected pres. in the 50's] I really can't see any informed Australian making that choice. Last referendum showed how 'ready' the average joe is to see us become a 'Republic'... About 7-12% of the population...
BTW: You cannot mention the ANZAC spirit without involving our relationship to England. Well, you can... if you're totally uneducated.
@redhardnuts . maybe NEXT time you get the referendum on that you could all...err vote on it ! ! just an idea. cos' you know, we kind of find the bleating pretty boring. :]
cwa. Sorry. It looks like you were born in 1982. If so, you were not even born when this took place. Your opinion therefore means nothing. You also have a dirty little mouth.
CWA. What history are you talking about? The only way to know about what happened in Vietnam was to have been there at the time. If you were not even born, what are you basing your history on?
This is a very old (1986) Battle of Long Tan documentary and not the award winning version which screened on the History Channe in Australia on 16 August 2006.
Yes..but its the only copy on here, I have emailed the producers and directors of the "new" docco trying to find a copy I could purchase with no success :(
If you or anyone else can obtain a copy, please post it to share this amazing true story.
@willytheekid I'm pretty sure that OZ2CDO is the producer of this more recent documentary and the upcoming feature film - ie. Red Dune Films - and is just making sure others aren't confused. Thanks for posting these 1986 doco clips.
