@1084421 what does fair plate mean? you want to give them a plate? as in a piece of crockery? do they get this plate as a reward when they return to ireland or do they get it while on duty....
I served in the Leb on two tours. Lebanese people are the nicest people I have ever met and that includes people from Moville in Donegal!!. Loved serving the Army, and would love to go back to the Leb now im older and wiser. Best days of my life in the Irish Army. It was tough at times, but in hindsight, I would'nt have changed it for the world. Mind you, my seargents were a couple of cunts. Corporals and privates still best mates even after 10 years since my last tour. Eire ABU.
@ocean3da You do know that the UN pay. the reason countries do peacekeeping is because if they dont they have to pay for another country do do it. It also helps that countries image around the world and in some cases gives that country more power in the country it has deployed troops in to keep peace as well as the most important aspect which is to provide a safe environment for the countries people to live in.
@ocean3da Believe it or not irish troops are loved by everyone in the places they have served. in lebanon in tibnin all the locals speak in irish accents.lol i was there a year ago i couldnt stop laughing i just taught it was hilarious. irish flag flys beside lebanese flag in tibnin
The men and women in the Irish army are heros and leegends not because we kill innocent people not because we engage in brutal hellish warfare but because we retore the peace we live on peace and equality and even when our numbers are small and our country is in conflict we lend a helping hand to restore war torn countries. Say all you want on human nature and surrender but my friend I know you wouldnt take the responsibility. I salute you all
In the event that Ireland is attacked all forces would be recalled to defend the state.
And anyways mush less then 700 irish soldiers are overseas at any one time. Leaving roughly 10,000 at home to defend the state.
What is the real reason you are against peacekeeping? You complain about larger countries bullying and harassing smaller ones, but when countries help eachother its suddenly unacceptable and all countries must look out for themselves.
I know 850 is a small number, and they would surrender because the army is not huge, we are not equipped to fight a real army, only to fight militia, etc.
Btw, I'm not arguing with you, I was just replying to one comment you made.
And why should it be a 1st world country? There are plenty of 2nd and 3rd world countries with armies a lot more powerful then most 1st world countries.
And i could name plenty. Iceland, Luxembourg, Switzerland (in the case of full time army size), Latvia, New Zealand and whole lot of others.
I didn't say anything about beating the invasion force. You were the one who said "Name one 1st world country we could beat".
I merely said that we wouldn't surrender just like that just because the chances of repelling an invasion are slim.
Just like any country with a volunteer force, no matter what the size, protecting their country is the reason most join up and they would not surrender simply because the chances of victory are slim
And if you'd look at the Siege of Jadotville you'd see that 150 Irish fought against upto 4,000 Katangese troops as well as French, Belgian and Rhodesian mercs who were ex-members of their respective militaries and armed with heavy artillery and had combat air support.
The Irish with only light mortars and small arms managed to fight for 4 days killing almost 1,000 of their enemies and taking no casualties.
They eventually surrendered because they ran completely out of ammunition but it shows that they are not the type to surrender when faced against a stronger enemy.
And i think in the case of an invasion of Ireland the will to fight would be much much stronger.
Actually one of the main roles of the DF as defined in the defence act is:
"To participate in multinational peace support, crisis management and humanitarian relief operations in support of the United Nations and under UN mandate, including regional security missions authorised by the UN."
So that makes your statement invalid.
As well the DF has more then just a few bomb experts there. They operate as part of patrols in Kabul alongside other ISAF forces.
Costa Rica does just fine without an army! I don't like yanks but they are basically the only reason is still running. I live in Shannon and hardly any planes come through here anymore.
And what do you think may happen here in one of the safest corners of the planet? We don't need our soldiers here, sure we don't even need any military at all!
Here bud when all those fire fighters and ambulance crews went on strike a few weeks back who was out doin their best to contain the floods and feed people-the Army-you prob have a nice warm office job anyway so keep your comments to yourself!!!!!
Nope no warm office job i work in a warehouse and would love to join the army but they have 6000 applications just sitting around. I just said having a military in this country isn't needed!
There was about 1000 per brigade. Not only that but alot of those applications would be from the same people applying to the different brigades since each brigade takes recruits independently of each other.
Realistically for general enlistment theres about 5 applications for each space.
But at the moment they have NO applications. They've all been returned because their out of date. The PDF will start taking app's again when recruitment restarts.
@atemporaryaccount100 Ive served the Irish army for 4 years I would deeply recommend it.

Is their any logic in your thinking at all?
murphxbox 2 years ago
murphxbox, it's actually about 850 at the moment, and if Ireland was attacked, the troops wouldn't be recalled... We'd just surrender.
Cyphairius 2 years ago
850 is still a small portion of 10,000.
And what makes you think they'd surrender?
Look up the "Siege of Jadotville" and you'll see that the DF would fight for as long as humanly possible against any overwhelming force.

ALL armies, regardless of equipment are there to fight "real" armies. Even paramilitaries and militias exist to fight "real" armies.

Name one 1st world country we could win a war against in that case.
