I could never figure out why I was always a closet Duran fan.I was into metal as a kid but something thing always drew me to these guys.It wasn't until I watched a documentary on them a few years ago where Andy said if you would have looked in his music collection back then you would have found AC/DC and VanHalen as opposed to new wave.He gave them that edge just enough to attract me and my W.A.S.P. loving friends.Even though they wouldn't admit it for years.
I just saw a documentary the other day, in it Simon said he wrote this song for John because he was so worried about him and his partying. So sweet!! I always wondered what it was about and now we know :)
@shecorona What was the documentary? Was it on a Sky channel, cause if it was then I really need to do another search for Duran Duran related programmes...
And live... Duran is one of the most SOLID bands I have ever seen. I am amazed at their ability to recreate songs recorded 20-30 years ago with such accuracy. They recently performed "Shadows on your Side" at a rehearsal show and it sounded like they recorded it yesterday. My jaw dropped. A good musician isn't being the best soloist, it isn't all the frills, it's clean performances time and time again.... writing interesting music... something I personally thank them all for.
we are here for the best reason there is ..great music....i sort of like it that people dont get it...my own secret club..all by my self no one around...heaven to me
I can honestly say that i am obsessed with Duran Duran!! This is one of many of my favorite songs by Duran Duran....... But it's such a shame, because my sister hates them and doesn't let me listen to their music in the car or whenever she's around.... i really don't see what's not to love about them... Thanks for posting this!!!
@the0nlybullet I sympathize with ya: a friend of mine who I happen to hang around at high school with quite a lot DESPISES Duran Duran (?!?) and when I kinda got The Reflex in my head and started singing it... Let's just say she wasn't too happy. The Reflex is the song that made her hate them, as is Rio. Like, why two of my favourites?! I have a lot of favourites, including Hold Back The Rain, New Religion and Friends Of Mine.
This does remind me of Too Bad your So Beautiful I can honestly say I almost forgot about this tune Hold Back the Rain. With the new album All You Need is Now, I feel that they found their classic sound again. It's refreshing.
@601South; this is exactly as it appears on my CD copy (AFAIK the first CD release).
Apparently there were slightly remixed versions of Hold Back the Rain on later US issues of the Rio album- I've confirmed this by checking on Wikipedia(!) Search on "Hold Back The Rain (Kershenbaum Remix) "
Having found the US mix of this song, you're right- it includes some guitar parts not on this version. But this one *is* the original!
@NotATube You are right. I have the US edition CD with the re-done version which Duran Duran apparently prefer. I used to own the vinyl album which had this version (the better version in my opinion). WHy can't bands leave their songs alone once they are published? Although the second version of MY OWN WAY (the album version) is ten times better than the original single version that predates the album.
@EddieAlda This actually is NOT the original. I used to have this album on cassette. The version of HBTR i had on cassette didn't contain the part when he sings "People tell me i haven't changed at all" and ends "you can't laugh all the time". On my cassette version he sings "Still blows down the lane", it then went straight to the chorus. It ALSO didn't have the bit that goes "So what if the words ain't rhyming" & ends "I probably didn't even say that right and i really don't give a damn".
@EddieAlda I was going to say on my cassette version after the first chorus ends the 2nd verse starts with "Okay go off and wonder..... ". Look for a video on here uploaded by xxgnrgirlxx of Hold Back The Rain. THAT is the original version I'm on about. IMO that version is better. I don't like the added two verses. By the way I've always prefered the single version of My Own Way. I've never been a great fan of the album version.
Thanks so much for posting this. While pretty much everything that Duran Duran released is terrific, there's just something about Rio that is above the rest of their work. Their self-titled first album was so good, but they outdid themselves with Rio but never seemed to be able to better it.
never bought their 1st, but i remember buying RIO on cassette way back in the early 80's. ive probably bought it a half dozens times since. great song.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this album! I loved it as a kid, and now as a 30-something, I understand why I loved it!!!!! Each musician in that band rocked in his own way. John couldn't have carried it without Roger's drumming, who couldn't have carried it without Simon's double-harmonizing vocals, who couldn't have rocked that shit without Nick's keyboards...
@beb2459 And I guess Andy was chopped liver??? Lol. It's his sense of rock, that spices up this album. Great riffs on this record. But I get what your saying, every member brought a different element, and it worked very well.
@rushlimbang Listen... to all people who want to name a bunch of other brilliant bassist whenever someone praises John Taylor... we're not denying other great bassists their due. John is and was one of the most interesting pop bassists ever. He opened up my ears to bass a long time ago and Duran's music features bass so beautifully that I can't imagine why anyone who appreciates bass or plays it wouldn't enjoy it. I know MANY who do.
