It's a fair bet Shakespeare was heavily steeped in Catholic traditions. Traditional Catholics focus on death and preparation for it but in the Reformation's new Protestantism, prayers for the dead were banned and 'death' as a transition was changed in perspective, causing much complex reflection in many of Shakespeare's audience.

just wanna say that I really like Billy Crystal's performance as the gravedigger. He seems funny, intelligent, and also the only healthy person on scene--so he associates most with us. His personality radiates warmth and wit.

There are two versions of Hamlet one which states that Yorick had been in the ground for three and twenty years and that Hamlet was seven when he died, making him thirty. Yet this seems to contrast with the rest of the play which describe Hamlet as young and hence Ophelia should be wary of his attention. Thus I prefer the other version of Hamlet where Yorick is describe as being buried for a dozen year; making Hamlet nineteen.
