I don't understand why they didn't put him in hall of fame.
They put Noah for example & he deserves(who won french open83).
Vitas won Australia77& 8semi at GS & at least semi at all 4GS. FinalFrench80Semi79 2semiWimbly(77-78) 1final usopen79 & 2 semi78-81. 2 finals at masters & 27 title won (2 Rome& 2 Forest Hills).Won titles on grass-carpet-red clay-green clay & hard court & over 500 matches won.
He made Tennis very popular because of his Personality & Generosity on clinics helping pour kid.
@BORGCONNORS Vitas played plenty of Davis Cup too! Majority of Connors career Jimmy wasn't really interested in doing the team thing nor play no 2 to Mcenroe's 1. That's where Vitas stepped in and furthered his career in that arena as well! Also when Vitas won in Rome, it was then called the Italian Open. The Italian Open was extremely prestigious.
Vitas played old style classical Tennis, only seen in books and in amateur tennis classes;and he was a pro!
he did the impossible thing!
while Borg was inventing modern tennis he was doing exactely what coaches all over the word tought,i.e. the perfect swing, the folow through, the straight arm, the classical voley, the perfect posture, the leg work, etc
@igalflint Yeah but he couldn't come over top of a backhand to save his life, sorry for the wording on that.
Bottom Line: I put up a blog post about putting him in the Hall of Fame just Google "Ode to Vitas" it should come up -- he should have been in there a long, long time ago and I wonder if they are just player hating because of th cocaine thing. Regardless of that that guy deserves it not only on his record but on his work outside the court, love the guy and what he stood for.
he oozed with charisma. he gave my sister a ride in his golf cart when she was at hopmans tennis academy and it made her year. I had a huge poster of him as well as one of borg growing up.
He's of Lithuanian descent but did he ever live there? I thought he was a New Yorker. Anyway, he was a great character and should've been even more successful. RIP

Geru was agreat soul. His legendary semi-final against Borg at wimbledon in 1977 is still regarded by many as maybe the greatest match ever.
