That is quite difficult for a beginner I must say. I've been playing bass for a few years now but never thought I'd really wanna play slap 'n' pop stuff until a very recent affinity for Primus made me feel otherwise. I think the changing from E to A is tricky enough let alone popping the the G and D if you know what I mean. I think to start I just want a simple low E slapping and G for popping only till I get comfy with it. Plus my thumb needs toughening up.
Okey this is too difficult for a beginner like me to do this fast, haha. One question though: do I see correctly that you mute the e string with your thumb after slapping it?
Man dude, after like 2 months Im finally able to do this at your speed, I cant wait to impress people with it. I love how it sounds, I wish you would do a lesson on the groove you got this from, your sick with the bass...
Much better than most lessons. My problem is the the rhythm, I always get lost there.
Ive been playing bass for a while and have normal playing down, but slapping is just hard minus a few lines I have been playing for years, newer lines just dont come so easily to me.
Thank you. I do think that the rhytmic aspect is one of the most difficult part of playing slap bass. Therefore I almost always practice with a metronome or some drum pattern. And most of the times I construct a slap bass line it is while playing to a drum pattern.
AT LAST!! Too many bass players just want to show off and not show you much. Finaly there's someone who is a great bass player who has the intelligence to be able to teach! Many thanks ThadewGrum!
Thanks. If you're not a bass player then it's not a lesson for you :-) But for those who play bass and knows a little about slap bass and actually have learned something from this, it is a lesson. Judging by some of the comments, somebody has learned from this.
The slap riffs are coming when I practice. Sometimes I play something that sounds like a potential riff, and from there I try to build it and construct it, until I like what I hear. Sometimes a riff is made in 1 hour, and other times it will take weeks before it's done :-)
I always use my index finger for plucking the D string and middle finger for plucking the G string. This also make double plucking and double stops more natural for me.

Doesn't need to be a vocal explanation for a lesson. Many people learn via aural and optical observation.

matizzle32 3 years ago
I played for 8 years in the 90's followed by a 12 years break from playing bass. I started to play again earlier this year.
ThadewGrum 3 years ago
How do you figure out those slap riffs? Everytime i'm improvising with my slap technique it always sounds like some of flea's slap riffs.
Dkbass0 3 years ago
The slap riffs are coming when I practice. Sometimes I play something that sounds like a potential riff, and from there I try to build it and construct it, until I like what I hear. Sometimes a riff is made in 1 hour, and other times it will take weeks before it's done :-)
