why is it that the Klingon ship in the center didn't try to simply use warp drive to escape vger when it assimilated the two other ships after shooting or do those type of Klingon ships not have warp drive at all
I really luv this opening scene, I like that it opens with Klingons first instead of human characters. I luv how the Klingons hav2 attack everything they come across first before trying to investigate lol. Then they soon turn tail once they realize oops this things way more powerful than us, maybe we shudnt hav done that lets retreat now!! lol.
The short lived animated series had already made a plot like this where a cloud comes towards earth destroying everything in it's path well the difference being the clouds themselves the animated one was pushed away once it realized that the people who lived on those planets it was eating had people living on them while in the motion picture the cloud died because Decker had fixed voyager 6 and therfore destroying it entirely.
This scene was the best part of that dull ass movie.....
Sorry, Trekkies, but they did this EXACT plot in a 40 minute TOS episode for what must have been the Craft Services budget for this snorefest and it was much more effective,
I love Robert Wise, but this was a real letdown.....
@theknightswhosayfrak At least ST:MP had characters, a plot we can detect, and provocative ideas packaged inside rather than be so ambiguous that its all up to the audience to invent their own meaning of 2001. Both have overly extensive scenes, but ST had stimulating visuals than...landscape and a single ship floating.
Plus thanks to Jerry Goldsmith's fantastic score it develops the ideas & atmosphere
more brilliantly than Kubrick playing a hit list of classic favorites.
Are you serious? STMP is practically brain-dead while 2001 offers genuine cerebral stimulus. Too bad you don't get it. There's a reason one is known as an all time classic and the other a failed debut nobody ever remembers.
@deityvishnu I'm sorry. I just hate all these stupid art films and out of body experiences. When I go to the Regal and buy cookie dough bites and root beer I expect to be told an epic story of adventure and romance. Not an acid trip with repetitive music, scenes that drag way too long. As much a Trekkie as I am, the opening Klingon V'ger battle/slaughter will always be my favorite scene from TMP. It was the perfect blend of sight, sound and content. With minimal dialog, it did everything to give the audience the thrill of battle, the impression of scale, and the enticement of mystery. The late Mark Lenard was truly one of the most underrated actors of his day - he could emote fear and dismay even behind all that Klingon makeup.
(sorry forgot to include him in the previous post)
These entertainment legends are gone now but their work has been preserved for the enjoyment and appreciation of current and future generations.... :)
Craig Hundley was known for building his own version and making extensive use of the "Blaster Beam", a unique electronic musical instrument which consisted of a 15 foot metal beam strung with several wires and equipped with electric guitar pickups. It was first heard in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" as the distinctive metallic bass notes associated with V'ger.
He also played in the original Star Trek Series, "And the Children Shall Lead."
these cruisers were seen again in star trek II kobyashi maru sequence. then the cruiser model was used again in star trek VI but they gave her a diferent paint job
Love the way this evokes the feeling of Mongolian plainsmen or perhaps North African berbers: a tough-living but sophisticated and determined kind of people.
I found TMP boring as a kid, but watched it recently (director's cut) and found it very absorbing. If you haven't watched it for years, it's worth giving it another try. I think I have the patience now as an adult that I didn't when I was younger.

As usual the Klingons got thier asse`s handed to them for attacking a Very large unknown object with thier shoot 1st ask questions later mentality. Love the music and special effects that went with this movie.
They are moving at warp speed. The problem for the Klingons is that they were approaching from in front with Vger heading right at them. Had they not evaded when ordered they wouuld have rammed Vger in about a minute. They had to pull away and turn out of its path which is gave them a low relative warp speed, aka they were toast.
This movie had its faults but it had it's moments too. Some of the most beautiful pre-cgi space art and some impressive f/x for its time and of course the iconic Goldsmith score. It suffered from weak scripting, indifferent acting (especially Shatner and Nimoy), unrealized plotlines, and a director who, while a great one, simply ill-suited for the pace and audience expectations of a Star Trek film. Boring but beautiful, this isn't a bomb, but an unrealized and unfulfilled classic.
@pbanta62 ...and some of the footage and sets were re-used in Star Trek II. Not to mention the main title theme was used for ST-TNG. I have to say that I was as disappointed with it as most everyone was when it came out though.
God I love that Blaster Beam. Also the modelwork on the Klingon ships is incredible and the effects have really stood the test of time, far moreso than later CG work.
"Bird of Prey" was used to indicate Rumulan ships, not Klingon. Those were K't'inga-class battle cruisers. They replaced the older D7 battle cruisers.
Seeing this again for the first time in decades, I realize the Klingons were introduced only to get slagged and demonstrate how threatening Vger is. The Worf effect actually predates the introduction of Worf!
This is not a blanket defense of H. Z, But For a firefighter, his "Show Me Your Firetruck" is as epic and blood-stirring as J. G.'s Klingon theme is for a warrior born.
We used to have Jerry Goldsmith. Now we've got Hans Zimmer shitting on almost every movie made these days with his syntho, sounds like someone falling down the stairs, Euro-trash "music". THERE IS NO GOD!

Star Trek TMP was on Syfy channel this evening. It has been a long time since I have seen this movie and I can remember watching it in the theatre for the first time in 1979, the opening music and the 3 Klingon Battle Cruisers flanked in attack formation was/is absolutely menacing ... wicked stuff!
I remember watching this in the theatre. The Klingons approaching Vger was intense. The tension in the theatre was so thick you could cut it with a knife. When you see first Klingon ship get vger-ized there was a nervous giggle and laugh, When the remaining ship is getting attacked the tension when right back up and the realization that the Enterprise was going to have to face this blue monster set in. Its a very good opening to the movie. The rest of the movie was good but the slower pace
The waste was this movie being made in the late 1970s, America's cinimatic palet was awful. Before 1970 or after 1981 the movie would have gotten better appreciation. I wish Rodenberry would have appreciated the hypnotic effects of too much blue in a shot and have warmed up the colors a bit with some green on the external shots.
This film is much derided (I'm looking at you "Big Bang Theory”!) but the Klingon theme alone should put it into the top 5 Star Trek films. This is the best musical representation in the entire Star Trek continuum. Ka'Plah!

To kbrenard92: They couldn't warp because retreating from battle is not an option for Klingons. The captain would have been branded a coward and put to death as soon as they arrived home.
@kbrenard92 I wondered the same thing but then I remembered they're klingons. It would probably be too dishonorable to flee. I'm just thinking like a klingon.
This was written by a man who knew that great music wasn't defined by the size of the choir, or how blistering a pace he could put into the music. This was a man who wrote THEMES, a man who was a perfectionist, a pioneer, and a musical genius.
Themes are definitely out of fashion in contemporary movie composition, especially the use of leitmotifs. The emphasis now is on rhythm and energy, and melodies tend to be simpler diatonic rather than chromatic pieces.
@FantasticBob7000 Sadly yes. After the Klingon sequence I was amped to watch the rest of the movie waiting for more scene like this. 2 hours later I awoke to the closing credits...
The full-length title theme to Star Trek: The Motion Picture should have been used in the entire intro to the 2 part TNG pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint".
@WhimsicalXay even a Klingon wouldn't hang around if they realised none of their attacks had any effect on what they were attacking whatsoever. They want an honourable death not a needless one.
@TitanLover8011, it entirely depends upon what you subscribe to. K't'inga is indeed a proper title for these ships, but so is D-7 ... the K't'ingas are a variant of D-7, after all, the M variant, I believe (although it depends upon what technical lists you reference). The D-7 we often see in TOS is generally known as the D-7A, and has a K name of its own (although I can't recall it atm).
These were still TOS Klingons, not afraid to run away when it was necessary. It wasn't until TNG that they got Flanderized into honor-obsessed hair-metal space Vikings who'd rather fight with blades than ranged weapons.
Yeah Berman and Braga definitely turned them into something they weren't during TNG and DS9. Now it's always "hurf hurf hooonaarrrzz" and space samurai bullshit. The Klingons have become the original "warrior race" sci fi cliche.
@CaptHawkeye I really don't blame B&B that much. It seemed like the Klingons were always changing. From the heavy metal Klingons in STV, to Russians in ST VI. It wasways struck me as odd how well-groomed these guys were compared to every Klingon who came after.

This was written by a man who knew that great music wasn't defined by the size of the choir, or how blistering a pace he could put into the music. This was a man who wrote THEMES, a man who was a perfectionist, a pioneer, and a musical genius.
NeroBlack2200 1 year ago 3
@NeroBlack2200
Themes are definitely out of fashion in contemporary movie composition, especially the use of leitmotifs. The emphasis now is on rhythm and energy, and melodies tend to be simpler diatonic rather than chromatic pieces.

Great effects. Sometimes CGI just can't match a true model. Especially the lighting and shadows.

Klingon warship designs seems to haave been influenced by the Martian war machines in the original War of the Worlds movie.

The full-length title theme to Star Trek: The Motion Picture should have been used in the entire intro to the 2 part TNG pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint".

Where would Klingons be without Jerry Goldsmith?

@bluworm Agreed. Goldsmith is FAMOUS for saving mediocre/crappy movies with his MAGNIFICENT scores for them.

Please forgive me for saying this, but I've never seen a Klingon run from battle before this.

they wernt surrendering they your turning to use their aft torpedoes since they were still loading their front ones - how dare you :)

Perhabs that "running away" wasn't actually one. Perhabs they were falling back for another attack run.
FekLeyrTarg 1 year ago
@WhimsicalXay even a Klingon wouldn't hang around if they realised none of their attacks had any effect on what they were attacking whatsoever. They want an honourable death not a needless one.

The D7 Battyle Cruiser has two Photon launchers in the rear and one up front, so turning around they double their firepower
Maltray 1 year ago
but theres arent d7 starships. they are k't'inga class battlecruizers. this was the first show with them.
TitanLover8011 1 year ago
@TitanLover8011, it entirely depends upon what you subscribe to. K't'inga is indeed a proper title for these ships, but so is D-7 ... the K't'ingas are a variant of D-7, after all, the M variant, I believe (although it depends upon what technical lists you reference). The D-7 we often see in TOS is generally known as the D-7A, and has a K name of its own (although I can't recall it atm).
mdmnmdllr 1 year ago
You should watch Deep Space Nine if you havent. During the Dominion Wars, Klingon ships did a lot of hit and run operations.
FederationStarfleet 1 year ago 2
These were still TOS Klingons, not afraid to run away when it was necessary. It wasn't until TNG that they got Flanderized into honor-obsessed hair-metal space Vikings who'd rather fight with blades than ranged weapons.
KenoshiAkai 1 year ago 4
@KenoshiAkai
Yeah Berman and Braga definitely turned them into something they weren't during TNG and DS9. Now it's always "hurf hurf hooonaarrrzz" and space samurai bullshit. The Klingons have become the original "warrior race" sci fi cliche.
CaptHawkeye 1 year ago
@CaptHawkeye I really don't blame B&B that much. It seemed like the Klingons were always changing. From the heavy metal Klingons in STV, to Russians in ST VI. It wasways struck me as odd how well-groomed these guys were compared to every Klingon who came after.

Wonder if v'ger would be so happy if lets a 300 klingons armed to teeth were to beam down to his ship :)
