  • When I saw this in 1979 I really wished my Ohio Scientific computer had more than 2K of memory.

  • why is it that the Klingon ship in the center didn't try to simply use warp drive to escape vger when it assimilated the two other ships after shooting or do those type of Klingon ships not have warp drive at all

  • I really luv this opening scene, I like that it opens with Klingons first instead of human characters. I luv how the Klingons hav2 attack everything they come across first before trying to investigate lol. Then they soon turn tail once they realize oops this things way more powerful than us, maybe we shudnt hav done that lets retreat now!! lol.

  • The short lived animated series had already made a plot like this where a cloud comes towards earth destroying everything in it's path well the difference being the clouds themselves the animated one was pushed away once it realized that the people who lived on those planets it was eating had people living on them while in the motion picture the cloud died because Decker had fixed voyager 6 and therfore destroying it entirely.

  • STAR WARS!!!! :D

  • This scene was the best part of that dull ass movie.....

Sorry, Trekkies, but they did this EXACT plot in a 40 minute TOS episode for what must have been the Craft Services budget for this snorefest and it was much more effective,

I love Robert Wise, but this was a real letdown.....

  • @archer1949 I agree. It's almost as bad as that piece of shit 2001: A space oddesey.

  • @theknightswhosayfrak At least ST:MP had characters, a plot we can detect, and provocative ideas packaged inside rather than be so ambiguous that its all up to the audience to invent their own meaning of 2001. Both have overly extensive scenes, but ST had stimulating visuals than...landscape and a single ship floating.

Plus thanks to Jerry Goldsmith's fantastic score it develops the ideas & atmosphere

more brilliantly than Kubrick playing a hit list of classic favorites.

  • @theknightswhosayfrak

Are you serious? STMP is practically brain-dead while 2001 offers genuine cerebral stimulus. Too bad you don't get it. There's a reason one is known as an all time classic and the other a failed debut nobody ever remembers.

  • @deityvishnu Sorry, I thought the film was boring as shit. Everything dragged on for too long and the ending made no sense.

  • @deityvishnu I'm sorry. I just hate all these stupid art films and out of body experiences. When I go to the Regal and buy cookie dough bites and root beer I expect to be told an epic story of adventure and romance. Not an acid trip with repetitive music, scenes that drag way too long. Pointless scenes that are never brought up again, questions that are never answered and an ending that is just plain fucked up.

  • @archer1949 At least ST:MP had characters, a plot we can detect, and provocative ideas packaged inside rather than like 2001 be so ambiguous that its all up to the audience to invent their own meaning of it. Both have overly extensive scenes, but ST had stimulating visuals of V'ger than...landscape & some ship floating.

  • the best

  • This is better than CGI

  • Mark Lenard (Sarek) was the Klingon Captain in the chair.

  • @kd4adv More Trek Trivia:

Mark Lenard was the only Trek Actor to play the three main TOS aliens:

    1. Romulan (Romulan Commander, "Balance Of Terror")

    2. Vulcan (Sarek, "Journey To Babel")

    3. Klingon (Klingon Commander, "Star Trek, The Motion Picture")

  • didnt someone use epsilon9's arcitechure in a mall somewhere?

  • Klingons were unable to destroy more advanced weaponry!

  • As much a Trekkie as I am, the opening Klingon V'ger battle/slaughter will always be my favorite scene from TMP. It was the perfect blend of sight, sound and content. With minimal dialog, it did everything to give the audience the thrill of battle, the impression of scale, and the enticement of mystery. The late Mark Lenard was truly one of the most underrated actors of his day - he could emote fear and dismay even behind all that Klingon makeup.

  • Klingon #1: Sir, a giant space cloud is invading our territory!

Klingon #2: How big is it?

Klingon #1: 82 AUs in diameter.

Klingon #2: How big is that?

Klingon #1: About 7.6 BILLION miles.

Klingon #2: Oh, 5, maybe 10 torpedoes should take it out, right?

    Klingons - Brawn > Brains

  • @Fortaker QUA'PLA!!!!

  • "That's it! We blast off NORTH in 45 minutes!"

"But sir! That thing's SOUTH of us!"

"See? I *DO* know what I'm doing!"

  • Evasive....... Which means thats get the F.....out here dude

  • Incredible model work. Camera fly-by might be the best ever captured on film.

  • R.I.P... (from TMP) Persis Khambatta DeForest Kelley JamesDoohan Majel Barrett Jerry Goldsmith [Great, OSCAR-quality score!] Robert Wise (from TWOK) Bibi Besch Merritt Butrick Paul Winfield Ricardo Montalban and Gene Roddenberry
  • @metaeditor R.I.P. Mark Lenard (from TMP)

(sorry forgot to include him in the previous post)

These entertainment legends are gone now but their work has been preserved for the enjoyment and appreciation of current and future generations.... :)

  • if that's the future of fashion, im killing myself now

  • Still love the pajamas starfleet wore in this movie....

  • Some trivia I found really interesting...

Craig Hundley was known for building his own version and making extensive use of the "Blaster Beam", a unique electronic musical instrument which consisted of a 15 foot metal beam strung with several wires and equipped with electric guitar pickups. It was first heard in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" as the distinctive metallic bass notes associated with V'ger.

He also played in the original Star Trek Series, "And the Children Shall Lead."

  • Seeing all the trekkies here on this page, ijsut want to say that I have missed you guys and gals. After allt hese years. I still miss this stuff.

  • I always felt that this scene alone ("Klingon Battle") could stand as a short subject film. Perfectly self contained, and my favorite part of ST:TMP.

  • I love it! I hear it about 10 times a day:)

  • these cruisers were seen again in star trek II kobyashi maru sequence. then the cruiser model was used again in star trek VI but they gave her a diferent paint job

  • Whoa, the opening credits look nice here!

They are different on my DVD. Is it because I have the Director's Edition?

  • ladies an gentlemen... mark lenard.aka sareck, spocks father.

  • 6 people are Romulan p'tok.

  • Love the way this evokes the feeling of Mongolian plainsmen or perhaps North African berbers: a tough-living but sophisticated and determined kind of people.

  • I found TMP boring as a kid, but watched it recently (director's cut) and found it very absorbing. If you haven't watched it for years, it's worth giving it another try. I think I have the patience now as an adult that I didn't when I was younger.

  • A timeless masterpiece that shall eternally be on a trek of all stars throughout the universe and beyond!!!

  • 6 people were in V'Ger's direct path.

  • some of the music is from classical music i was listening to wagner's tristan and isolde and a i heard some familiar music, i was like hey i heard that in a star trek movie, lol,

  • @shafta99 film composers rip off classical composers goldsmith ripped off stravinsky williams ripps off holst when dimitri tiomkin accepted the acedemy award he said i would like to thank beethoven tsychovski...

  • As usual the Klingons got thier asse`s handed to them for attacking a Very large unknown object with thier shoot 1st ask questions later mentality. Love the music and special effects that went with this movie.

  • 5:15

  • They are moving at warp speed. The problem for the Klingons is that they were approaching from in front with Vger heading right at them. Had they not evaded when ordered they wouuld have rammed Vger in about a minute. They had to pull away and turn out of its path which is gave them a low relative warp speed, aka they were toast.

  • Nice shots. I have a 1/1000 D-7 that I'm modding to a K'Tinga which is what I see here in this video. Thanks.

  • This movie had its faults but it had it's moments too. Some of the most beautiful pre-cgi space art and some impressive f/x for its time and of course the iconic Goldsmith score. It suffered from weak scripting, indifferent acting (especially Shatner and Nimoy), unrealized plotlines, and a director who, while a great one, simply ill-suited for the pace and audience expectations of a Star Trek film. Boring but beautiful, this isn't a bomb, but an unrealized and unfulfilled classic.

  • @pbanta62 ...and some of the footage and sets were re-used in Star Trek II. Not to mention the main title theme was used for ST-TNG. I have to say that I was as disappointed with it as most everyone was when it came out though.

  • this is the best part of the movie.

  • This is my favorite part of the movie.

  • @gmoore9449 Kinda went downhill for me after that... ;-]

  • Maybe the third ship got away (from the editor, oops!)

  • If I were any of the Klingon captains, I think I'd have gone to warp anytime after about 5:20...

  • 5:39 - 5:45 is my text message alert tone :P

  • @ComradeRichey I had 2:46 - 2:58 as my ringtone for a while.

  • @ComradeRichey High five! We're the biggest geeks on this comment section :P

  • What we leave out is at least as important as what we include... Wm Shatner?

  • I hear that "BHUM BHUM" and my heart leaps into my throat.

  • Not bad music Gerry or is it Jerry.. But you could have made it more deep Jerry..

  • God I love that Blaster Beam. Also the modelwork on the Klingon ships is incredible and the effects have really stood the test of time, far moreso than later CG work.

  • I agree. This IS film music perfection. I love the very beginning use of drums to introduce and then after how it leads into the attack. Superb!

  • Where can I sign up for the Klingon Empire?

  • "Bird of Prey" was used to indicate Rumulan ships, not Klingon. Those were K't'inga-class battle cruisers. They replaced the older D7 battle cruisers.

  • @warlocalcott

    respectfully,

actually sir the term "Bird of Prey" was used for both.

In fact in the TOS storyline the Klingons and Romulans shared designs,

like the D7 battle cruiser design, namely the episode "the enterprise incident"

    look it up!

  • Lousy movie overall but amazing music

  • HAHA! Gotta love Klingons,,Shoot first,,and then run when they are about to get their butts kicked,,,

  • Heh! If the Klingons were at "warp speed", then so was the man doing the EVA at the space station when it was hit!

  • @Anelf3 This is from the original version of TMP? Because i have the Director's Cut version and it don't have the part from 4:44 to 4:56.

  • Why in the hell didn't the Klingons go into warp speed?

  • @founder222 They were at warp. V'ger was moving along at a good clip.

  • Comment removed

  • @founder222 those were only mark 1 bird's of pray they didn't have warp tech

the mark 2's were the first bird's of pray to be warp capable

  • I like this just for the description.

  • The Klingon theme was taken from and inspired by the scherzo to the fourth symphony of Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

  • Seeing this again for the first time in decades, I realize the Klingons were introduced only to get slagged and demonstrate how threatening Vger is. The Worf effect actually predates the introduction of Worf!

  • This is not a blanket defense of H. Z, But For a firefighter, his "Show Me Your Firetruck" is as epic and blood-stirring as J. G.'s Klingon theme is for a warrior born.

  • @backdraft916 Show Me Your Firetruck is the theme to Iron Chef!!!!!!

  • they reused the klingon cruiser for star trek VI

  • @TURBODORK2 Yes. However, they gave it a more aggressive painting. Looks like a diamondback rattler. Dangerous.

  • I'd hate to see what would happen on a Federation vessel if the temperature dropped!

  • Music is for a 'warrior race' Goldsmith brilliant

  • ...Klingon redshirts LOL

  • those Federation people... nice pajamas.

  • We used to have Jerry Goldsmith. Now we've got Hans Zimmer shitting on almost every movie made these days with his syntho, sounds like someone falling down the stairs, Euro-trash "music". THERE IS NO GOD!

  • @RAIDERS58th The Zimmer has assimilated 85% of all film composers, and rising. Resistance is futile

  • @RogueRotting360 LOL! You hit the nail right on the head! If you're a fan of his, I suppose that's a good thing. If you hate the son-of-bitch as much as I do - photon torpedos full spread and hold the line! NO SURRENDER!

  • Star Trek TMP was on Syfy channel this evening. It has been a long time since I have seen this movie and I can remember watching it in the theatre for the first time in 1979, the opening music and the 3 Klingon Battle Cruisers flanked in attack formation was/is absolutely menacing ... wicked stuff!

  • I remember watching this in the theatre. The Klingons approaching Vger was intense. The tension in the theatre was so thick you could cut it with a knife. When you see first Klingon ship get vger-ized there was a nervous giggle and laugh, When the remaining ship is getting attacked the tension when right back up and the realization that the Enterprise was going to have to face this blue monster set in. Its a very good opening to the movie. The rest of the movie was good but the slower pace

  • The waste was this movie being made in the late 1970s, America's cinimatic palet was awful. Before 1970 or after 1981 the movie would have gotten better appreciation. I wish Rodenberry would have appreciated the hypnotic effects of too much blue in a shot and have warmed up the colors a bit with some green on the external shots.

  • Does anyone else think the K't'inga Battlecruiser looks absolutely amazing in this ? WOW... I love the Klingons.... K'pla ...

  • @SGH28N They sure do. Real models > CGI any day!

  • @SGH28N It looks great because it isn't CGI. It's a well built model that has lots of shadows and thats something CGI just can't recreate.

  • @SGH28N SG, I am secretly a super nerd and I agree. And I am an undercover trekkie

  • An amazing symphonic score which still holds up with any modern comparative.

Goldsmith displayed an incredible portfolio of breadth and accoustic diversity that William's scores often seem to lack....

just look at some of Goldsmiths landmark scores- Alien, Star Trek, Boys from Brazil, Outland, Omen, Great Train Robbery,Magic etc A lost genius....

  • an advertisment for red doesnt make sense for this video

  • whare are the borg whare born in v.ger

  • @Mybuddhakitty Your spelling is attrocious. I can't even understand what you're trying to ask!

  • @Mybuddhakitty This is why we should execute the retarded.

  • @Mybuddhakitty Get off daddy's PC.Frickin' retard

  • This film is much derided (I'm looking at you "Big Bang Theory”!) but the Klingon theme alone should put it into the top 5 Star Trek films. This is the best musical representation in the entire Star Trek continuum. Ka'Plah!

  • Hey I recognize that metallic twang from First Contact. Man Goldsmith had a long memory.

  • 1:33 is when the truly epic stuff begins. Honestly, it's my favourite part of the entire film.

  • I saw the movie and that big blue cloud is a robot that's a satalite called voyager6 that was sent from NASA and got lost in like 1950something

  • Rick Berman and Jerry Goldsmith would've had at it. Berman fired Ron Jones in spite of his critically acclaimed work dramatic scoring of Star Trek TNG during the first 3 seasons. According to Jones, Berman "always considered music an intrusion", and forcibly changed the dramatic scoring to generic wallpaper songs shortly after firing Jones after his scoring in "The Best of Both Worlds".

    EAT IT BERMAN!!

  • @armysupertroop Berman was a hack.

  • @pandaphil I'd like to melt Berman in the transporter by deleting his pattern and materializing him.

  • To kbrenard92: They couldn't warp because retreating from battle is not an option for Klingons. The captain would have been branded a coward and put to death as soon as they arrived home.

  • ooohhh my god got to love star trek!!!!! STAR TREK FOREVER!!!!!

  • why dont they warp

  • @kbrenard92 Because that wouldn't be the Klingon way.

  • @kbrenard92 I wondered the same thing but then I remembered they're klingons. It would probably be too dishonorable to flee. I'm just thinking like a klingon.

  • @kbrenard92 STOVOKOR!!!!!

  • This was written by a man who knew that great music wasn't defined by the size of the choir, or how blistering a pace he could put into the music. This was a man who wrote THEMES, a man who was a perfectionist, a pioneer, and a musical genius.

  • @NeroBlack2200

Themes are definitely out of fashion in contemporary movie composition, especially the use of leitmotifs. The emphasis now is on rhythm and energy, and melodies tend to be simpler diatonic rather than chromatic pieces.

  • Great effects. Sometimes CGI just can't match a true model. Especially the lighting and shadows.

  • @greg19670 Well said.

  • A classic section of music from Jerry Goldsmith -10/10

  • Makes me wish this was a silent movie. I.E. only the music a soundtrack.

  • @Kinemacolour It was a silent movie, nothing said in that film was worth hearing lol.

  • @hamanu666 some people think that silent movies had the best acting

  • Klingon warship designs seems to haave been influenced by the Martian war machines in the original War of the Worlds movie.

  • весело быть клингоном) их облик чудесным образом очень сильно меняеться от фильма к фильму)

  • Only good part about that movie.

  • @FantasticBob7000 Sadly yes. After the Klingon sequence I was amped to watch the rest of the movie waiting for more scene like this. 2 hours later I awoke to the closing credits...

  • @jtno2 Join the crowd.

  • Good WORK!

  • Love the Federation Pajamas in this movie they all wore....very comfortable

  • Ripoff,but good.

    watch?v=Gg_dnfOg7B8

  • The full-length title theme to Star Trek: The Motion Picture should have been used in the entire intro to the 2 part TNG pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint".

  • One of Mr. Goldsmiths best.

  • @greg19670 if not the best!

  • klingons getting spanked !!! fire 1st and see later !! morons !!!

  • im happy to say i have the old version as well but i love this one

  • Where would Klingons be without Jerry Goldsmith?

  • @bluworm Agreed. Goldsmith is FAMOUS for saving mediocre/crappy movies with his MAGNIFICENT scores for them.

  • Please forgive me for saying this, but I've never seen a Klingon run from battle before this.

  • nor i

  • they wernt surrendering they your turning to use their aft torpedoes since they were still loading their front ones - how dare you :)

  • @WhimsicalXay

Perhabs that "running away" wasn't actually one. Perhabs they were falling back for another attack run.

  • @WhimsicalXay even a Klingon wouldn't hang around if they realised none of their attacks had any effect on what they were attacking whatsoever. They want an honourable death not a needless one.

  • The D7 Battyle Cruiser has two Photon launchers in the rear and one up front, so turning around they double their firepower

  • but theres arent d7 starships. they are k't'inga class battlecruizers. this was the first show with them.

  • @TitanLover8011, it entirely depends upon what you subscribe to. K't'inga is indeed a proper title for these ships, but so is D-7 ... the K't'ingas are a variant of D-7, after all, the M variant, I believe (although it depends upon what technical lists you reference). The D-7 we often see in TOS is generally known as the D-7A, and has a K name of its own (although I can't recall it atm).

  • You should watch Deep Space Nine if you havent. During the Dominion Wars, Klingon ships did a lot of hit and run operations.

  • These were still TOS Klingons, not afraid to run away when it was necessary. It wasn't until TNG that they got Flanderized into honor-obsessed hair-metal space Vikings who'd rather fight with blades than ranged weapons.

  • @KenoshiAkai

Yeah Berman and Braga definitely turned them into something they weren't during TNG and DS9. Now it's always "hurf hurf hooonaarrrzz" and space samurai bullshit. The Klingons have become the original "warrior race" sci fi cliche.

  • @CaptHawkeye I really don't blame B&B that much. It seemed like the Klingons were always changing. From the heavy metal Klingons in STV, to Russians in ST VI. It wasways struck me as odd how well-groomed these guys were compared to every Klingon who came after.

  • @CaptHawkeye I really don't blame B&B that much. It seemed like the Klingons were always changing. From the heavy metal Klingons in STV, to Russians in ST VI.

It always struck me as odd how well-groomed these guys were compared to every Klingon who came after.

  • @WhimsicalXay They're not stupid :-) Foolhardy sometimes.

  • @WhimsicalXay There are two things even the Klingons will run from: tribbles and the sound of a blaster beam!

  • Wonder if v'ger would be so happy if lets a 300 klingons armed to teeth were to beam down to his ship :)

  • Yeah.. Mark Lenard didnt last that long in this movie... :(

  • Gotta give Goldsmith a big hats off on this music. When you hear it, you know some badass Klingons are nearby. So fitting ....

  • yay star trek is not dead

  • Is that Mark Lenard?

  • Yes.... Sure is. :)

  • @Laceykat66

Yep, the only man to play a Vulcan, a Romulan AND a Klingon!

  • Almost a great film. As it stands it's a weird curio with good music and excellent special effects. 2 and 3 are better.

  • Gotta love the Klingon K'Tinga class cruisers!

This scene really did establish klingon set design, costume and music for the entire next-gen era.

  • Before this, that is.

  • I'm trying to remember the last time I saw a Klingon run from anything.

  • I like pants. :(

  • Jerry Goldsmith is still my favorite composer. The theme from first contact is my fave but all are great. Also love Alien.

  • Good Lord if this is not film music perfection.

And those massive orchestral sweeps at the end - EPIC

  • today is a good day to die

  • Goldsmith also used the Klingon theme again for Worf when he scored ST:FIRST CONTACT.

  • I love the music for the Klingons, it represents them very well

  • @wolfstev76 it sure does !!!

  • SPACE

    THE FIN-L FRONTEEYAH

    Picard accent FTW.

  • the first 7 minutes of this movie were awesome, then it got boring afterwards

  • miss jerry..

  • I didnt know Jerry Goldsmith died. :(

  • WUAOOOOOOOOO....Una de las mejores secuencias de Ciencia ficcion de todos los tiempos.
