I have a hunch that the color of roofs has a lot to do with the amount of heat build up in houses over summer, I think that a light paint color ( yellow, white etc ) would be much cooler than say black etc, it's like a car - on a hot day hold your hand for a short time on a black car then go over and hold your hand for a short time on a white car - you will see what i mean. I am going to paint a house roof Dulux clotted cream color, I did the same with a garage and the garage is much cooler....
I also have a high pitched tiled roof that has a large attic space. The house is two storey and gets really hot inside.
Would you also recommend installing plaster vents inside the house to let the heat directly into the attic?
I will be installing the eve vents as in your orhter video, but wasn't sure if I need to ad plaster vents inside the house. At the moment there is no air flow from the sealed plaster rooms to the attic....or very little.
@darrenjc78 I would have a talk to the maker of the vents to decide whether or not to install inside plaster vents. I myself wouldn't install inside plaster vents because maybe heat buildup in the upper floors may be worked down through the vents on very hot days, as well as dust and insulation, besides i personally don't like the look of interior plaster vents
Mate awesome video I am about to install one but the instructions where confusing! how these work is exactly like a fan but in reverse, they create a vacuum within the roof cavity to remove the hot air you can notice this if you hold the turbine(palm facing up) and spin it you can feel the rush of air low pressure air under your hand. these can be installed without the eave vents but the low and high pressure cycle produced will not work at max capacity.
the heat is expelled through the top but as it turns it also draws in newer air on a still hot day the whirly vent will spin from heat alone your eaves breather holes should provide enough air to circulate into the roof space i have 4 whirly birds but like retrofisherman suggests maybe an open cap vent placed 1-2 feet below the whirly birds will help a little
Hope you have a passive intake source in that hip roof like some dormers or under eave vents sofits so those turbines will work properly. At no time should the exhaust exceed the amount of intake ventilation. That type of roof should have some air intake sources. Convection & wind driven.
Im just wondering, is it 100% water proof there? Since the metal sheet is not 100% taking the place of the roof bricked that was there before the vent?
As a concrete tile roofer for over 20 yrs there are a couple of things that I would recommended doing differently.
1. Seal the top of the flutes of the tiles with mastic to prevent wind driven rain from getting under the base of the flashing (should be a lead base to mold into the tile profile).
2. Never caulk or silicone the tiles together as now you have made a dam between the over and under lap
Nascarenbroncosfans there is 1X4 horizontal strapping under the tiles that the tiles hook onto.
@tintala Yes cold air would come in in winter. I suppose you could cap them off with plastic or some other type of material. I dont think much heat builds up in the ceiling anyway in winter.
When I was younger, I was fascinated with those things. I used to think they were motor-driven. I remember my old elementary school had the motor-driven ventilators that looks like a spaceship. I was also fascinated with them too and had no idea what they were 'til I was in 3rd grade.
Because the vent is tilted the water flows down and off the vent. I did'nt seal the sides or bottom. If after hard rain there are problems with water i'll make a note of it here. So far so good with rain.
but I need to know how to line up the bottom. Still having problems getting the North South, East West, both level. How did you figure it out on the first vent?
Reply cfauska Yer its not easy to get the vents level. there are usually 2 points of adjustment, the base plate and flue just take your time and do the best you can, it's not always posible to get the vent 100% level anyway.
Don't think silicone is required on the join of the shaft and flashing. This need to be free to allow release of condensed water.

I believe that you should not glue the bottom part that connects to the base flashing as this is used for a natural gutter.

@triplex1983 Thats what it said in the installation manual

You also want good airflow in the attic in the winter to prevent buildup of humidity.

@RetroFishman Yep that's installing roof vents 2 - i will link them up

Heat rises. Air movement upwards causes fan to turn. No fan required.
