My grandpa died in 1948, four years before I was born, but I was told that this was one of his favorite songs, and it was playing on the radio when my grandma got word that he'd been electrocuted at work. I've always loved this song.
my mum used to sing this to me as a lullaby ...she passed away recently and i read the lyrics at her funeral service. such appropriate words and emotion , thanks for posting , it has really comforted me.
Thanks pentubes for taking the time and trouble to comment on what clips I've posted by Marty. He's my 'hero' as well. To me, he has never received the credit or plaudits his unique vocal and songwriting talents deserved.
Not only did he have outstanding vocal ability, but he wrote many wonderful songs that crossed all genres.
Who better to sing this song is none other than my "HERO" Marty Robbins. Thank you again "tarquin45" for posting.
This is New Zealand's signiture song, during the war - when the "Maori battalion" left the shores of Aotearoa (NZ) for overseas. The song is written and sung both in Maori and English.
Yes Maori Farewell song, great by Marty and I am a fan,, but have to say the maoris sing it better.

This is a very old song my mum taught me as a tiny tot. She knew it from WW2,

@Scerena0 - Marty first recorded this in 1957, so I've playlisted it for that year.
I'm creating playlists for each of the past 100 years - a musical escape to the past. Years 1950-1975 play for an hour each.
200 more playlists honor individual artists - I add every upload I can to them.

I have the LP "Song of the islands" and is simply PERFECT. I'd like you to hear Gene Vincent's version of this song. Just awesome.
