Ayumi, what do you do with all of your trimmings? I have tried so hard to not have a lot of clay in my bucket 9I hate, hate, hate rendering that mess without a pugmill). Agian...brilliant method.
Ayumi. We are enjoying using our handmade pottery from you. We love the earthenware cups. Handmade pots make life so much better, I think they make my food taste better. Thanks for the great pottery video. Karma says she wants to be in a pottery video now.
This is great! It shows other potters an unusual technique they might want to try, and shows non-potters how an object can be made in a way they might not have thought about before - very educational. Love the dog cameo too!
It's a good question Randall. I developed it as an alternative to wet throwing, because wet throwing was giving me such bad tendonitis. Now I tend to mix up my processes from day to day so that theyre less repetitive for the sake of my body. I also loved trimming so much, I figured out a way to create work this way, not just finish a pot this way.
I love the way moist clay records fingerprints and rib marks, I love the stretch marks and muted marks from the way in which the clay gets pushed out from the inside. Aesthetically, I love the inherent uncontrollability of the process, which makes the throwing a bit uneven and looser. Lastly, I can work more quickly because the pot dries more quickly, plus I can manipulate the clay immediately, like when I fold down a flap handle on a dish right after its thrown.
Ayumi, I had heard about your technique but didn't know you developed it yourself. I have always been a HUGE fan of your work but now I am in awe....you are amazing!
why would you do this????

If the trimmings are spritzed down and wedged back up immediately, it's no problem.

I am not really sure what the point of this is.

it's really that confusing?
superpiskymab 2 years ago
When measured against traditional throwing techniques, it is confusing as to why one would do this. This is not a negative comment BTW.

Either way I love it!
