  • the symbol of green. beautiful country.

  • Thumbs up if SOCI 273 brought you here!

  • My Professor Sent me here

  • how can you not smoke that fuckin cannabis ? <3

  • been there and like that country

  • How fascinating.

  • Blessing

  • "The kingdom of Bhutan is placing environmental concerns and spiritual wellbeing over rampant capitalism."

Have fun when you're poor, ignorant, socialist and being attacked by economically superior nation-states. Don't deify the past or confuse American-style socialism with real capitalism. Free trade, free markets and personal responsibility are necessary for the development of all arts in a society, including philosophy and values.

  • 13:45 Bhutanese Jean Baudrillard! XD

  • I'll stay in the U.S. thanks.

  • 250 US dollars a day?!?! Ouch....

  • Watching this video made me happy. :)

  • Not diverse enough. Get Bhutan some multiculturalism pronto!

  • @ntskl Hell no. Cultures are supposed to be preserved, not mixed into one global mess.

  • @JL3Wind Das raysiss

  • @ntskl nope

  • I was the 100,000th view! :D

  • These people know what real happiness is all about.

  • how can a country that's responsible for kicking out over 100,000 of its citizens claim to be "the happiest and most peaceful country"? In fact, Bhutan is the largest generator of refugees till date!!! It's so sad how stories of some people goes unheard!

  • It's ironic that Bhutan, reputed to be a "primitive" society economically, is in fact the most technocratic society on earth, in the best sense.

  • This place is paradise on earth. This is how people are meant to live. I am SICK of the materialism and greed in western countries.

  • pot bacon...mmmm

  • So they will let us screw up and go extinct then they will learn from our mistakes in our rather callous development and rule the world all by themselves! I see their sneaky plan...

  • We should redefine what "undeveloped country" actually means. Its present definition implies that industrialism and profit-chasing are signs of evolvement. I would say Bhutan is taking a sideways step into a surpassing level of evolvement, and setting an example for others to follow.

  • I would even bet the traffic police are not beating and murdering the others either! Imagine?!!

  • @44prot i don't think traffic police in america do that either, they just direct traffic

  • Charging a tourist $250 a day to visit Bhutan is one of the smartest ideas I've ever heard!

That means the tourists you have are --- on average --- mostly well educated tourists who simply wanted to go and walk around and do sight seeing for a few days, in a relatively exclusive place, not to trash the countryside or to set up some type of network or activities.

It means you could manage the influx of tourists and also get a decent income from it and both visited and visitors are happy!

  • This is intriguing. We are told that the only goals in life are the acquisition of money, property, status and power. So then why isn’t the GNH index on a par with the GNP index or the other conventional standards of living index?

  • Wow........Weed, happy people living the simple life.......man I'd like to visit this place!

  • IS THERE ANY MUSLIM COMMUNITY IN BHUTAN?

  • Comment removed

  • @songshoshe

No, that's why its so peaceful.

  • Feeding pigs with marijuana...Even the pigs are happy, then!

  • They now got tv and internet... ouch now it is inevitable. They will be like us in time no matter how much they want to stay the way they are. Future Generations...

  • I like that farmer's hat.. Go Dawgs!!

  • They may be signalled as a "dangerous" example and bombed by NATO and US drones as they did in Libya! They should avoid any contact with the evil bastards.

  • @gatheringleaves

Yes, I like to see my country to be the best of the best, but only in reality not in fake.

How can we say, we are the peace loving nation, if our king makes hundred thousand of Bhutanese cry in refugee camp?

The fact is 1/9th population of the country are staying in refugee camp or have been resettled in third country. I love the kindness and sympathy of our folks, but I hate the denial of freedom to these folks.

    Thanks!

    Sonam

  • @Mr4sonam

Because they're not really Bhutanese, there ethnic Nepalis, so quit complaining and shut up!

  • @gatheringleaves

Be realistic, how could many of our people living inside Bhutan remain happy if hundred and thousand of their parents, children, families, friends, and neighbor are today living in a refugee camp?

    Thanks!

    Sonam

  • @Mr4sonam

There not hundreds of thousands living in refugee camps, it's only some Nepalis in Southern Bhutan, not Central or Northern Bhutan, so relax, it's not a big deal

  • @gatheringleaves

I also agree entire country should not be responsible for the cruel action of our government, but people like you and me are not responsible to announce the truth?

    Thanks!

    Sonam

  • I hope that this is not destroyed by expanding Chinese forces

  • this is great example of a sensible country, taking advantage of more invasion restrictions and making sure that it works 4 the people

  • I really hope they don't succumb to the theistic religions, now that they have tv...

it will be probably the biggest threat to their lifestyle and happiness.

  • @mihaimoldo The form of Buddhism most commonly practised in Bhutan is highly theistic and focused on deities. Also, Hinduism is widely practised in the country as well (although to a much lesser extent than Buddhism) and it is of course a (poly)theistic religion.

  • @gaatakek but isn't Buddhism an atheistic religion with no deities, reason why so many call it a philosophy? As for hinduism....didn't knew they practiced it.

  • @mihaimoldo There are different kinds of Buddhism. The kind most commonly practised in the Himalayas has a heavy emphasis on deities. That being said, I'm pretty sure all forms of Buddhism have deities, they just don't have the same importance they do in some other religions. Hinduism is the second largest religion in Bhutan. Also, many Himalayan peoples practise a Hindu/Buddhist syncretic fusion, especially in Nepal.

  • Extra! Extra! The U.S. is invading Bhutan because they believe their way of life is a weapon of mass destruction!

  • If those thousand of Bhutanese Refugee are warmly welcomed back to Bhutan, and given the equal respect and support to every language, religion, and values of people of Bhutan, then the real meaning of gross national happiness blooms.

  • @Mr4sonam

Stop obsessing over some refugees, it's not like the entire country was responsible for the governments actions. Bhutan is a good, honest, spiritual country with few problems compared to Maoist Nepal

  • I am happy if they are happy!

  • actually i just loooked it up. the BTN trades about 46 for one US dollar. 8-22-11

  • I wish a lot of this wasn't changing. But who am I to talk...

  • I wish my country was run like this.

  • they should take some of that MJ they feed to pigs and sell it to us "morally corrupt" westerners for MAD profit!!

  • It Is all your drama to show the world.I know what is going inside the country. So be patient, realistic , and good. There will gross national happiness when the Bhutan return its people who are living in refugee camp in seven different camp of eastern Nepal. Also who are resettled in Western countries.

  • @MrMadrita

No there is gross national happiness there now and the Bhutanese are not entirely to blame for a bunch of Nepalis living in Southern Bhutan

  • I love bhutan

  • dudes dudes!~ quit the fighting, and look up the video's statistics, if you look up the map of who has watched this there are people from Bhutan that have. Hello Bhutan!!!

  • Screw college, I'm moving to Bhutan!

  • yeah, ok, what ever!

    I'm angry you're just sad!

anyway there is nothing wrong with wanting more. if we didn't we wouldn't have planes to travel to other countries or computers (and internet) to exchange those stupid messages or a whole load of other everyday things!

I'm bored with all this now, so I will not reply any more. Have a nice life and find a new hobby. Goodbye.

  • the policeman should be in lady gaga's video

  • One country where pigs do fly!

  • king knows no better than fucking 4 wives, i think he is the hybrid from pig ,so he is giving importance in raising pigs. let him hang up with pigs.

  • This king has just given his country to Jews and corporations. The Bhutanese people will now be grist in the capitalist mill. TV will undermine their culture. Young people will ignore and mock their elders. The will smoke the weed growing all around them. Corporations will buy their parliamentary leaders and the Bhutanese will be slaves. Enjoy modernization! Come travel all around L.A. Or New York and see the national happiness TV and Jewish capitalism and "showbiz" brings to nations.

  • @MardukHail the people of Bhutan still have their minds, voices and feet, they will do it their way. No traffic lights is similar to studies in Denmark where traffic accidents are few and far between (because people use their own minds and courtesy. I love the dancing traffic warden.

  • I'm glad I watched this video! Thanks for posting it. My heart breaks for them.

  • @SevenWeapons Your heart breaks for them? Why? They're probably happier than you, me, and 99% of the world.

  • @trojanpony I'm saddened because they are becoming modernized. Didn't you see? That one family vegging in front of the tv? What made them more happy than the rest of us is trickling away as they begin to turn into the rest of society.... Paradise Lost...

  • @SevenWeapons Oh, I see. I thought you felt bad for them for being poor or disconnected or something, but just the opposite. Sorry for the misunderstanding and I agree. However, I am optimistic that they will use as much discretion with television and internet as they have with other modernizations over the century. For better or worse, I don't think it's realistic to expect them to be completely out of the loop of modern technology. They have too much pride to let it take over their lives.

  • this is the best country to live only if you from the ruling ethnicity not from minorities. otherwise face persecution, murders and arrests, get kicked out of you land. cant speak your language and wear you clothes. bullshit. as a buddhist nation, it should be ashamed of its treatment to Lhotsampas. May these people learn what Buddhism is about. not about ethnicity but having compassion and kindess to fellow Lhotsampas.

    Om mani Peme Huma

  • Fuck Denmark, I'm going to Bhutan :D

  • Also their silly gross national happiness! First of all, you can't find what is their GNH for any period, second of all, their slogan "Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product" is slightly stupid when - and I quote -More than one third of the population lives below this poverty line - source raonline

maybe that's where they should start measuring this invented happiness!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sorry but this is one f***ed up country! preserve your culture, tradition and land ok, but ban the sell of tobacco completely while allowing to smoke with a stupid "permit" is just idiotic! Either ban it completely or allow trade of it! Also forcing tourist to sign up with a designated tour operator for a hefty $200 (minimum) per DAY per person??? WTF? While they are allowed to travel anywhere! $200 in BTN (Bhutan Ngultrum) is 9,120.59! while their average daily income is around 40BTN!!!

  • @joolcee A lot of countries does the same. In Canada for example, doing drugs is illegal. But there's still free-injection sites for the urban drug addicts in Vancouver (for containing HIV and calming ad. The Bhutanese government is merely looking after the interests of all. The 1% smokers in the country may not be able to quit in a short period of time. Wouldn't it be kind of draconian to simply denying them their tobacco? Not even a western government like Canada does so to their drug addicts.

  • @joolcee if that Pead Head cranium has limited resources don't comment. You don't know from Sh*t and sha*t so keep your cool kid. Where did you get your figures regarding income. Do you know that we our people are one of the best paid in South Asia or you mistook us for Nepal, Yes! that country is totally screwed, go there and you can do drugs, kill etc.

  • @wangdugey whatever you say, I don't give a f@?k,

you are still f@?xed up country.

Are you preparing some big celebration in June to mark your 12th anniversary of being able to use internet and watch tv???

  • @joolcee I see you are one busy man on youtube writing negative comments on Bhutan. Are you being paid for this job NGOLOP. Just answer me the day a Nepalese sheds his caste system can he talk about human rights, living in Bhutan for a couple of years does not give you the right to change that countrys history or culture. You misplaced people are creating problems in Northern ndia, UK and very soon US also. Keep writing

  • Comment removed

  • @wangdugey

Why on earth do you keep referring to Nepal? It's got nothing to do with it! Are you thick?

  • @wangdugey

yes, I am paid for this by the Government of Kingdom of Bhutan. I'm paid whole 1,000 BTN, just under 15 quid to cover some of my monthly internet cost. Bhutan pay me to scare off potential tourist, because you can't have too many! Despite the fact that visiting Bhutan is quite an expensive affair, more people than Bhutan would like are interested. Hence, they hired me to ravage you tube and leave negative comments.

  • @wangdugey

Also another interesting fact: 60 % of the budget expenditure, is financed by India's Ministry of External Affairs

If only my neighbours would cover 60% of my expenses or at least 20%. I would be just as happy as Buthanese people.

Awaiting your reply shortly. Please don't be so stupid and refer to Nepal again. We are talking here about Bhutan. Not Nepal, that's a different country and a different subject. I hope you now understand it, yes? Very good, give yourself a pat on a shoulder

  • @joolcee Bhutan govt's is not financed by any govt or agencies for free...it is financed through Aids and grants, by signing memorandum of understanding...so please cut your craps..

  • @zamlingnelam took you long time. should be 'cut your crap'

whatever! understanding, yes!!! that's one way to call it. never mind, lost my interest in your sad little existence. call it happy if you are. I'll stay here in my own little material word, with freedom and education and all the goodies that money can buy, since I have everything else (family, good job, home etc)

  • @joolcee What ever??...i don't mind how u live or stay as long as u keep ur "craps" for ur self..

  • @zamlingnelam and again what ever!!!

  • @joolcee I remember a time a couple of decades ago when television was state controlled and you didn't have internet either...I remember it because I lived and worked in your country at that time in an effort to help it transition. Now, you think your "modern" way of life is so great that you can come on threads and pollute them with your disdain toward other ways of doing things? Wow...short memory, I guess.

  • @tvswnet you're an idiot. first of all, tv is still somewhat controlled.

once the internet started existing and was available to public (in the early 90s) it was available in UK

what transition are you talking about?

    get a life looser!

  • @joolcee According to your profile, you're in Poland. Surely you're aware of a transition a couple of decades ago. Also, "looser" should be "loser." If you're going to call people you don't know names, might as well spell your insults correctly.

  • @tvswnet

well i'm not in poland, i've lived in uk for 15 years. i don't really care much for poland, or how long ago transition happened! it's almost third world country that thinks its europe! uk is my home so don't bring poland into it, because apart from my nationality there is nothing that links me with it! Your tip is duly noted, i will now call you loser! if that's all you got, you're sad. so sometimes i get similar words mixed up! big deal. how many languages do you speak?

  • @joolcee I speak 5 languages--3 of them well enough to professionally teach and translate...not that's neither here nor there. Anyway, you seem like an angry person...good luck with that. Bye.

  • @wangdugey

this was said in March 2000 by one of Bhutaneses, or Drukpa if you prefer, or whatever:

"The cafe was not viable as a business venture because costs were high and local people unable to afford its rates for internet access, Mr Pradhan said.

"It is expensive for us also because at the moment there is not a lot of business and most people just use the internet for a few minutes to send e-mail," he said."

    Source BBC News.

  • @wangdugey

if you are so well paid as you suggest, why couldn't people afford internet in year 2000?

by the look of your national statistics, you still cannot afford it, also your population is going down and your life expectancy is 67.7/64.1 (women/men) this is the age that people retire in UK, not die!!!

such happy place, with rich happy people and they die so young? what is it? happy people tend to live longer so maybe it's something in the water? hmmm

  • Truth seekers need to do better research and study cultures like this. The new Zeitgeist movie, where they propose their solution and ideal society, is taking it too far.

  • "I think Bhutan is the one country where pigs do fly."

That's the one sentence I thought I'd never hear.

  • feed me with some weeds.

  • ENGLISH HOMEWORK YEAH

  • Lovely country, people and culture. Wise king. I sincerely hope it survives globalization.

  • Wow what a king..

  • I want to go here

  • this is how people are meant to live.

  • They would do well to ditch the TVs.

  • for all you who think bhutan is such a great place ask the 280,000 nepalese minority who actually do the heavy lifting like building the roads which i saw with my own eyes while there. Mind you they also encounter great discrimination and repression by the state as well. Utopia well if this was it I would shoot myself

  • @meleszenawi1111 Thanks for bringing that up. You know, if they say that it's too good to be true...

  • Wow, definitely a place to see before you die. Happiness, beautiful and peaceful culture and people, and cannabis. What could make it more awesome?

  • the traffic police handsome thought.

  • To lexyzimus thats BS i have wireless in my house and guess what i live in bhutan and i can search whatever the hell i want!

  • Buthan's internet is more restricted than the Chinese one.

  • Buthan puts our society to shame

  • @clonetown

Yeah it does, a very traditional and non-hateful society like the West

  • Having several queens on a chessboard would be nice, but I hope the women are happy with their marital situation. The queens seem very influential, and happy to be an invaluable resource (as any politician should be!), so that is something.

On another topic, it's rather flippant of the narrator to call television a "deity". I hope it doesn't poison the people in Bhutan as it has people who already have it. It's also kinda rude calling royalty a "fairy story".

  • which proves, levels of drug abuse have nothing to do with availability.

  • @bvrcrap56 The level of availability typically lowers the level of abuse. It isn't as fun if it isn't forbidden, and drug lords can't have a hold on the trade.

  • one of 2 things is going to happen, USA will invade or china will ! that will be tragic.

  • This looks like shear heaven!!!! If you can't get a job directing traffic, then you can 'relax' with the pigs - amazing!!!! it's a modern day eutopia : )

  • @richaldo99 No it really isnt. If you cant get a job you languish in bars and leech off of your family the same as anywhere else in the world. Im not saying Bhutan is a bad place but I dont want foreigners to have a distorted view of the place.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL loveeeeeee this , cars and cows crowded the road. What a lovely :)

  • Television is the Trojan horse. I wouldn't wish (and am in no position) to deny anything to Bhutan but TV really rots the brain. They really need to keep their eyes on/off(!) that if they want to maintain their culture as it has been and keep what they value.

  • television and internet is going to destroy the youth and culture to raise the kids to destroy thier own land eventually. it is so captivating to see anything you can think of good or bad . alot of european ways and inventions are really destructive and they try to take over everything

  • @tingsgwan The internet may not be so bad. Raise the children to appreciate what it can be used for and it won't be abused [as widely]. The internet is just a toy for many in the US, as unfortunate as that is, so people don't understand/care what a great resource it can be. Television on the other hand...I'm living quite happily without it.

  • greetings from Romania, a nother Buthanese country .Well Bhutan will be soon devorated, by television, by stupid democracy, wich has failed as a sistem. I hope this interesting people survive. I dont see that young king so conservative. He wants a technological Bhutan

  • Fuck the materialism ! Long live Bhutan ! You are in state of bliss ! World has become shit now !

  • bhutan

    land of flying

    thunder pigs....

  • Its ironic that the scientific, modern industrialised world is so certain that they are advanced that they call themselves "developed" and other countries like Bhutan "undeveloped" when it is patently obvious that this is not a true reflection of reality. How could we have got it so wrong? How with all our scientific knowledge of the human species did we confuse money with happiness or freedom with choice? What good is to come of economic growth and ecological harm for the future generations?

  • Yes, in many ways places like Bhutan, and formerly Tibet, are way more advanced than us, I prefer tradition over technology any day

  • @ambientclouds I know this comment is over a year old, but former Tibet, when the Lama ruled last, had capital punishment, slavery and a a literacy rate that only even existed in the aristocratic class. It was a horrible place, where stealing anything could have your entire arm amputated and people had their eyes gouged for angering the aristocratic class or monks.

  • @jemmre Good question, that's actually the question Buddha asked himself and Buddhism is what he made out of it. Be happy with what you have, don't be greedy.

  • @jemmre You have the answer in your question: "...scientific knowledge of the human species..." Our science examines the world without us in it; in fact, we even study "the human species" as if it's not us. We've disconnected ourselves from our Selves, from each other, and from the planet which sustains our very lives. We've declared money to be more important than human life, and now we're more miserable than ever.

  • @jemmre Mmmhhmm...Lets see a civilization following Bhutan's philosophy outlast the destruction of Earth some day, either by a comet, solar flare, etc. Bhutan will be gone, and the rest of human civilization will be chilling on an off-world planet.

  • @jemmre Also, if I would not be happy if I lived in this country.

  • GOODBYE folks im moving to Bhutan..lol..you deal with the dictatorship of Obama.

  • if i would be born in this country, i must have been happy long ago,

  • I've noticed that the Bhutanese and Tibetans all have atrocious musical taste.

  • Are you retarded. There musical tastes aren't atrocious, it's their traditional music, you should not be so ignorant

  • @gatheringleaves

Well, *I* find it atrocious. If YOU actually LIKE it, excellent, go for it. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I've listened to some Tibetan nusic before. I honestly found it hard to imagine how anyone could like it.

I respect the rights of the Bhutanese etc to their own ways of life. It's merely that some aspects of them don't appeal to me.

  • Yeah so you shouldn't have even brought it up in the first place you idiot, I swear people really need to open their minds

  • See it sounds like a paradise and all that it ain't travel there you will see

  • Do you know about more than hundred thousand of Nepali Origin Bhutanese forcefully evicted by this tyranny ruler? How can this king and his kingdom can have gross national happiness while 100 of thousands of it's citizens are suffering in refugee camps? Reporter of this video please, try to bring the true plight of this kingdom and what it's king has done to it's fellow citizens. Bhutan was never a sangrila nor has gross national happiness, even today.

  • @sphatik

Uh yes it does, they were there illegally and they were causing disruptions

  • @gatheringleaves who said that? will the people who live in the country since their 5 generations illegal? what about you guys there? then the whole country itself is illegal, right? don't speak your idiocy....

  • Seems like you guys are not familiar with Bhutanese Ethnic Cleansing campaign that lead to thousands of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. You guys should rethink what western media portrays Bhutan to be. Here is the Human right commission link if you wanna check

  • the address is aAgwkf (Use bit ly)

  • @pinkyush.any nation has the right to protect thier own country..bhutan was simply protecting themsleves by being overrun by the illegal immigrants from nepal. Just beczuse they have lived in bhutan fro 5-10mins by illegally crossing the border doesn't suffice one to be a citizen of that country.

  • @pinkyush These illegal nepalese has ruined their own nation Nepal and now trying to infest their corrupted nature into Bhutan. Stay away please, we are one happy nation who wants to live and carry forth our legacy passed down from our ancestors. Our kind is our god! He is the most noble king of all the time!

  • @tsherique Dude! Did you even check the Human right comission report link that i provided? Every body is entitled to their own opinion but not their own FACT .and the fact which is clear like light of the day is that People of Nepelese Origin (not Nepali citizens) who were living in bhutan for generations (more than 2) were forced toleave bhutan. Not tens not hundreds but thousands were tortured.and funny that your king is your god. I pity you for your ignorance.!

  • who cares, the people of Bhutan didn't decide that, the King did, and anyway they were causing trouble so some of them deserved it

  • I look to Bhutan and pray. Don't turn out like us. Be your own masters, and deny the enslavement of modern media. The internet brings just as much knowledge as ignorance. The television enslaves cultures into western ideals. Yes there are things gained, but the Bhutanese have something special, something not worth giving up for anything.

  • Hmmm.... a monarchy that makes Gross Domestic Happiness the national policy. Yet, here in the USA we are taught to believe that Free Market Capitalism and Democratic Republicanism are the best forms of political - economic system for any nation, and that everyone follow her example. It also appears US gov't doesn't see an oxymoron in bringing Democracy to the Iraqi people by force.

  • @danpt2000 You have made the point accurately. Concepts like "democracy", "free market capitalism" are not really the ideals we should pursue. They are only PROCLAIMED as ideals by the US. In actuality, the pursuit of materialistic values and democracy has made men always demand for more, and they feel doomed when their demand could not be satisfied,

  • yeah right, gross national happiness is only being maintained because of massive investments in hydro electricity by the Indian government and buying a major share of the electricity. nice place, Utopia, temporary, peace

  • @vijishellboy : the nebouring places are all just envious and jealous of us!!

  • @vijishellboy why is everyone jealous of this tiny happy nation BHutan?

  • @tsherique Because you will really become happy if you live there - either by being born there or migrating there and living there long enough. Bhutanese people know the meaning of life - and I mean THE meaning of life. That is, living a simple life. In this way, it prevents your standards from becoming too high, and you will be always happy.
