oil based is the only way to go any other stuff is shit for residential driveways all the pros use oil based but....... the only place you can put coal tar really is big parking lots or any place where the asphalt is thicker ressidential drive way are to thin for the product it wont let it breath or expand since ashphalt expands on hot summer days
@1sickwop Oil based is terrible, dosen't last, does not provide grit and longevity sand in asphalt based emulsions do, wears off usually within months, makes for a shiny NOT dark, rick black finish, can be slippery(hmm oil and water, maybe if you want to build a slip and slide), there are no hardeners, it does not help to fill in grainy, rough spots. I can go on and on. 1 man get rich quick gypseys who offer a tailgate guarantee use it cause its cheap & quick, theres no pros to using gilsonite..
dont use that stuff it cracks your driveway get somone who has an oil base machine NOT WATER BASE (water base sets on top of your driveway and cracks your driveway)oil base soaks down in your driveway and opens the pours and dosnt let it crack but the stuff like this or from lowes DONT GET IT its water base too and where you fill in the cracks with it it seals the crack and closes the poures in the driveway so be smart and use OIL BASE SEALER and not with a sponge with a sprayer

(continued from below) away within 1 to 2 years, and is generally useless at protecting asphalt long term. Blackmac, on the other hand, which is developed by McAsphalt, is ONLY shiny during the curing time (about 1 week), dries to a matte black finish, lasts 2-3 years, and is generally backed by a satisfaction guarantee, which SM doesn't offer (gee, wonder why not?).
To the homeowners throughout Ontario:
Don't run the risk of having SpringMasters seal your asphalt. You'll regret it.
(continued from below) some unnamed US company which Ben Stewart won't name. Ben has stated (and I can prove it, it's in writing) that SM prefers this product due to it's reduced 'wholesale cost' and 'added drying agent' which quickens drying time. REAL BlackMac is ONLY AVAILABLE from 3 depots in the GTA, is NOT SHIPPED from the States, and has NO ADDED DRYING AGENTS, so what SM customers are really recieving is a sub-par product that is ULTRA-SHINY for WEEKS, wears (continued)...
I used to work for SpringMasters in 2007 and 2008. I would have stayed but I left when I discovered more about SM's products (including the Sealer).
It is ABSOLUTELY TRUE that SpringMasters purchases no-name brand seed and fertilizers for distribution in their MasterPlans, which are MASSIVELY overpriced. Also, it is true that SM uses LOWER QUALITY sealants for their driveway sealing service. They use an oil-based derivitive of BlackMac, manufactured by (continued)...
Some rookies had made mistakes yes of course, but we have a lot of professional in the company that have been working for more than a year. I've seen driveways done by dirty hairys ( guys who drive his own truck, own company) and most of them does a shitty job. We don't sound like idiots at the door if someone says "your a really good salesman. And maybe you don't like the carts but its probably why we are Ontario biggest sealing company.
Ya its funny how you bought it, just like any other stupid home owners who really think something is 100% pure even tho we just told them its a "tar-based" it says its a based.
no buddy, mmctw2002 your wrong, spring masters have put business bankrupt every years lol, its so funny, the other business, the one that use acrylic or oil are dumb ass. Btw when I said, tar, I mean coal tar, its like almost the same.. so we do use coal tar.
if they use acrylic sealer, they did scam you. im in the sealcoating business, and we use a coal tar asphalt blend. never use acrylic sealer! all it is is oil, and oil ruins your asphalt
they use a shitty commercial sealer that you can buy for like 20 bucks, which is call acrylic, that is just like paint, they scam me, they don't even seal it, they just paint it, so I called Spring Masters Canada over, and they actually seal it with 100% pure tar.
Theslinx...you dont know what your talking about. Maybe you should do some research on what sealcoating really is. Whoever told you 100% pure "tar" is the scammer. Tar is a generic term used by scammers and uninformed customers, not professional sealcoaters. Any reputalbe contrator with half a brain would never call it "tar" And ive never heard of Acrylic sealer!? Up here its either Asphalt emulsion or Coal tar. Whatever this Spring Masters Canada put on your driveway...its NOT sealcoat!!Wake up

OH AND BY THE WAY!
THESLINX: Coal Tar sealant IS WATER-BASED, JUST LIKE ACRYLIC. So admitting SM uses Coal-Tar (which is incorrect, actually) doesn't help your cause.
