  • Omg I was soo scared this morning bc my cocker spaniel was doing the same thing and I spent about three hours searching on what it could be and all my dogs symptoms seem to be this and this is the excat way he did it, but even though I have a clue I'll still take him to the vet tomorrow:(

  • Reba does this from time to time. The first time she did it, I too thought she could not breathe. When her Vet told me it was a backwards sneeze, I thought she was CRAZY. I mean Reba does sneeze the regular way. She sneezes so hard that sometimes she practically slaps her face on the floor!

  • I'm actually writing an article about this. It's not a rare condition. It's caused by nasal mites and there's even medicine for that. The bugs in the nasal cavity tickle the dog which causes reverse sneezing. There's at least two types of medicine availabe: Stronghold (oil) or Milbemax (pills), both available from vets.

It's not life threatening but a huge pain to have on daily life. If you take care of your dog, fix it.

Please like the comment so we can get it up there and people aware.

  • @dopenoisia Oh, and if you have more than one dog in your house, it's likely they all have the mites, since they transfer from dog to dog. While you are at it, get medicine for all of them. Even if there's one in the house that isn't doing the sneezing.

  • why is it called a reverse sneeze?

  • Comment removed

  • oke you have to close its nose then he/she will stop if it comes again just do it again

  • My dog does this too. I've googled it and it says it could be an allergen?! Is that true?

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't rare. We have two dogs that do it and it's all over the internet about what it is. I hate it when ours does it.

  • @makarios21 It isn't rare at all. I've had 4 dogs thus far, and I can remember 3 of the 4 doing it. I can't promise the 4th didn't. Maybe I just never caught it. I think it's just one of those things that dogs do when certain nasal/throat anatomy is irritated. Like how we cough, sneeze, wheeze, snort, etc. My pet hypothesis is that any dog can reverse sneeze under the right circumstances. Some are just more sensitive to environmental irritants than others.

  • Reverse sneeze

  • I don't think it's all that rare - my previous dog (mixed breed aussie shepherd and german shepherd) did this and then we got a dachshund and he does it too. Not a lot, just at random times. We always thought they were going to throw up or something.

  • @Trintyprince well my chiuaua does this alot wen i take her for walks. almost all the comments say this is no big deal but your talking about what your vet said. are you sure about the surgery thing becuz i dont think we can afford that and i dont think my parents are willing to pay for it. do u think she'll be ok without it?

  • the easiest way to help her, is to cover her nose with your hand so she can get suction and close the flap that's causing it to happen, my vet said its the flap of skin that separates the lungs from the stomach it opens and closes to let air in from the mouth and some times they get stuck open or close, if your doggie goes though this more than twice a day surgery is needed but it ill be cosmetic.

  • Thank you so much for posting this, its very helpful. I was looking after my parents papillon last night and he started doing the same as the dog in this vid off and on for 2 hours. I thought he was about to head off to the big kennel in the sky..Really alarming to watch and I didnt sleep a wink afterwards! Good to know it's a fairly common condition. Thanks again.

  • MY DOG SOUNDS JUST LIKE THAT!! how can i help him? he just scared the crap out of me the 1st time he did this and i dont no whats causing it, can someone help?

  • poor baby . this happens to my dog too :(

  • My new dog a yello lab mix, woke me up at 4 am this morning doing this. I was very concerned and even tried the hiemlic maneuver as I thought he must be choking on something. Is this a dangerous condition and what should I do?

    mmhamby

  • when my dog does that i act like im cranking a chainsaw

  • i never knew that was a sneeze lol

  • This isn't a rare condition. It's called reverse sneezing. It's very common in small breeds, but any size dog can have it. My Pom has it, I took her to the vet. Nothing to worry about.

  • THANKS for posting the video, both of my dogs started making that sound while breathing (happens when they are exited or run or eat to fast).

Then I found something about reverse sneezing, and that it is not harmfull.

And just to be sure I check how does its supposed to sound and they do the same as the video.

  • omg soo cute

  • Hey! Take a look at this -> watch?v=P1rbSj2y6RU shows you whats to do in this situation!

  • my chihuahua does this =O I akways thought she was choking. Good to knoe it's just a sneeze.. Any reasons for why it happens?

  • Poor dogs like "Is this what's supposed to happen?!"

  • So what is this exactly? My chocolate lab does this exact same thing but I only notice it when I come home from somewhere and hes excited to see me!

  • @findyourway19 -Same thing here. My maltese does the same especially when i am back home and he is excited. Is there a cure for this? it sounds creeeeeepy. sound to me he is sufferring a hard time breathing. poor dog

  • @findyourway19 It's just something dogs do to clear their sinus'. My poodle/cocker spaniel does it. It does the same thing a normal sneeze does, and can be a symptom of allergies.

  • my dog does this sometimes

  • if u close his noise it will stop it no need to let the poor thing go thur that

  • omg i thought my wiener dog was the only one who does this i always said he was having a panic attack lol so i would go sit down where he was and pet him until it stopped

  • This happened when I took my friends beagle for a walk. Because it was hot and humid and the dog is a little fatty I thought it was asthma or allergies and her throat was closing. But apparently beagles do that when they are excited and she probably hadn't gone for a walk in weeks.

  • my dog does this, when i heard my dog doing it at first i thought it sounded like it was getting ready to spit a loogie or something

  • OMG! My dog does this too! She is a Jack Russel, and it can happen at the most random times :S

  • Oh my gosh, thanks SO much for posting this! My pom recently started this and I wasn't sure if it was the AC, the fact we switched rooms where there is more moisture, his new dog food I thought he was allergic to, or a combination. Thanks again!

  • I have a bunch of dogs that do it. I've found that if you open their mouth they tend to stop. It's like their breathing gets a little out of wack. Everytime I open their mouth and try to have them keep it open it stops. Try it;)

  • So that's what it's called? I have a bichon and he does this from time to time. We always wondered what it was. We always thought it was maybe an allergy... it also sometimes happens after he gets overexcited but usually it's really random. It's scary to watch--his entire little body shakes!

  • @freelancer4726 My corgi and Yorkie both do this. Though these episodes should be short, my dogs overreact (I think they get it from me) and the episodes end up lasting longer. All they need is someone to sit next to them and pet them. Every time I do it, they calm down. I just think they need someone to let them know that they are okay.

  • Reverse sneezing is not so rare at all. It is a common occurrence around our house during high pollen seasons or when we have Santa Ana winds. I thought too that there was something wrong with our dog at first but our Vet assures us it's normal. If a dog keeps reverse sneezing for any length of time, days on end. They do have a doggie version of Benedryle the Vet can give to them.

  • My dog has those sometimes as well. We immediarely told the vet and she said it was just reverse sneezing and my dog is fine.

  • A reverse sneeze is nothing to be worried about. I had a dog who would occasionally do this, but he was usually fine after about a minute or two.

  • You should put your hand on his nose, than he will stop, our dog did this too and if you do it they stop.

  • i have a 10pd , 1 year old Dash-Poo. was told by my Vet that some animal have it and nothing to be worried about. i comfort her whenever i can, but seems there is no treatments and does no harm. is that right?

  • @titite35 It does no harm at all. It is just a sneeze, but backwards. Usually with my dogs (a yorkie and corgi) they tend to feel better after you calmly lay next to them and pet them for a little until the reverse sneeze has ended. Do not do it right as it has ended because they are still a little freaked out, thinking something is wrong and that can cause another episode. If it is an allergy, your doctor can give medicine but nothing else. Hope this helped :)

  • Reverse sneezing is a phenomenon observed in dogs, particularly in those with brachycephalic skulls. Its exact cause is unknown but may be due to nasal, pharyngeal, the dog's attempt to remove mucus, or from over-excitement due to present activity. It is characterized by repeated forced inhalation through the nose, accompanied by gagging sounds. Though it may be distressing to the animal, it is not known to be harmful. Most dogs are completely normal before and after episodes.

  • @uvlajzakonje way to copy and paste from wikipedia dude.

  • @makeghandi I just did it because there are people who are dumb enough to ask here, and not search the internet for this ''condition''. There are simply loads of questions like ''is it harmful'' or so, that nobody replies to, and then again those who asked do not bother to search the net. Trust me i know a couple of cases about this.

Anyway, it is nice of you to notice. Peace

  • our dog does that occasionally too.

  • That happens to my chihuahua but it lasts almost more than 20 minutes is that normal

  • My pitt Bull does this once in a while - it always freeks me out. I'm so releived it's nothing dangerous.

  • My shih tzu has inverted sneezes too.. my vet said it's nothing to worry about, it happens every so often but still makes me nervous... ususally lasts less than a minute, but I hate to see it happen :(

  • Same thing with our beagle. I thought it was asthma or something, but when we asked out vet, she told us what it was. It does kind of scare you though...

  • my Pom does this too

  • my rott does this and it scares the crap out of me cause it looks like he's having trouble breathing.

  • @KianaTheWordsmith OMG! I just bought a chorkie (chihuahuaXyorkie) and I took him to the vet- I thought he had doggy asthma or something. it totally freaks me out!

  • I really thought my beagle was the only one to do this. I thought it was because she was out of shape lol.

  • @W88Angel me too i have a beagle and i thought it was wierd!

  • @W88Angel wtf I have a fat beagle and I thought it was a breathing issue coz she was a stray!! well I feel a bit better now.

  • My two Chihauhau's do this ... glad I've read that others do it too!!

  • Oh btw it is also (or most likely) triggered when they get excited.

  • Its not rare its actually very common and mostly seen more on smaller dogs.

  • I had a dog that did this several years ago...have another one nwo..wonder what causes it?

  • My chihuahua does this... I thought it was something really bad ....

  • my dog does this sometimes, i watched a dog 101 video on yorkshire terriers and it explained everything

  • Tony, my 5 year old beagle, has had this his entire life. Nothing you can really do. Just rub his throat and pinch his nose until he calms down

  • My 8 month old corgi has done this twice over the past few days... I'm glad it's something that is common. It's certainly scary! :(

  • thanks for the video...My husky did this n it freaked me out

  • Thanks for posting this- it has helped to diagnose what my dog is doing without incurring a huge vet bill.

  • While reverse sneeze is usually harmless and not caused by anything serious, you should have your vet check your dog for possible causes. Sometimes reverse sneeze is caused by a significant physiological problem that can pose other health threats to your dog.

  • I freaked out when my corgi did this... I usually just rub his chest and it calms down the "sneezing"

  • =O my dog has the same thing lol

  • my kitten bites me T^T then my black cat is lllllaaaazzzzzyyyy! lol

  • cutie! but im more of a cat person

  • me too my cat makes weird sounds lol

  • @JiraiyaZantIssun Lol that is a funny little dog! :D

  • very cute dog, what kind is it?

    so its reversed?

  • Its a Corgi

  • This dog is cute.

  • Thanks
