Picard knew Wesley's dad Jack and was a long-time friend of the Crusher family. You know, in a poll by Maxim Magazine, Wesley Crusher ranked the #2 most annoying Sci-Fi character, topped only by Star Wars' Jar Jar Binks. That's right folks - after about a decade and a half, the only person who could top Wesley was Jar Jar Binks.....
Too bad this isn't the Mirror Universe where I could put Wesley in the agony booth and keep turning up the power, slowly, very,very, very slowly savoring every scream and tortured grimace as I drink a martini and smoke a Cuban cigar. I would then have a video made of the event and posted on Youtube for all of Starfleet to enjoy.
But of course, Wil Wheaton is a nerd, and Star Trek fan, even before his stint in The Next Generation, and bright teenagers tend to be more volatile than dumb ones. I enjoyed his performances in The Next Generation as he's a bit older than me, and the stories written for him were just right back then. Gene Roddenberry was right in casting him, but of course, all you say against Wil or against Wesley is against the great bird of the galaxy himself. So quit your bickering.

But of course, Wil Wheaton is a nerd, and Star Trek fan, even before his stint in The Next Generation, and bright teenagers tend to be more volatile than dumb ones. I enjoyed his performances in The Next Generation as he's a bit older than me, and the stories written for him were just right back then. Gene Roddenberry was right in casting him, but of course, all you say against Wil or against Wesley is against the great bird of the galaxy himself. So quit your bickering.

WHAT?! But Riker was the one who had Wesley go to check on Data when he was acting suspicious! And then when He comes back to report that he thinks that Data is actually Lore in disguise, not only does Riker ignore his concerns, but says he's "out of line" for expressing them! WTF?! And even though he turns out to be right....about EVERYTHING, no one seems to care! What the hell was wrong with the writers in the first season?

Hmm... Gene Roddenberry wrote a lot of the first season, where did it get him? Nah, I don't think this most memorable moment of TNG is up to such simple analysis. The character of Wesley was conceived as a genius teenager, sort of what Gene himself wanted to identify himself with at that age. Wil Wheaton's portrayal of Wesley got him branded as this know-it-all genius nerd, which worked for me well, as I was one too then. But the execs and the less bright were annoyed.

I use to watch this when I was very young and I always envied Wheaton's physical appearance. I wanted to look like that so bad as a teenager! But no!!! I was cursed with Acne and a bad posture :*(

1. Jumper uniforms
2. Wesley Crusher

@Dragosmart The doctor told the costume designers to make new uniforms because the jumper uniforms risked the actors' permanent skeletal damage. The doctor apparently forgot about the psychological damage the viewers might face, so he didn't tell them to get rid of Wesley Crusher.

@ihatefurrys Oh, there's several (hundred?) thousands of us. But as one gentleman already pointed out, even worse were the occasional sightings of a man in woman's uniform (the one with that little skirt) in some of the early episodes... that was just nightmarish
