  • YOU ARE ONE HANDSOME MAN.

  • fyi, buy some charcoal, grind it up n and mix a little when you are planting..you'll have a very high germination rate..

  • This is a good video series, thanks for making it. I'll have to get my family of 9 to start getting more prepared for stuff.

  • hey sootch00 i got a question on your food prep since you know alot about the subject, but during a shtf scenario do u give some of you supplies to family, freinds, neighbors, and to your fellow man, trade with them, or keep your supplies all to yourself for your household family, because i was thinking if i do help then could it possibly bite me back and be vulnerable to looters?

  • love your videos. preparation without panic. good advice.

  • Sootch we've raised chickens for years and they are, in my opinion, perhaps the easiest source of quality protein there is. They practically take care of themselves, will eat insects, grass, weeds and all sorts of table scraps. We feed ours scratch and crumbles but they could get by with out. One critical piece of advice that will help a newbie to chicken raising is build a predator proof coop! Coons are your worst enemy!

    Great vids! thanks!

  • my family grow much at our farm. we get about 200 to 400 kg of potatos every harvest. however we have been cutting down on the potato growing due to we cant eat potato all the time :D. so last year we begun to put some salads and other vegitibles on half of the field and its working great. we also have 20 chickens and we are thinking about getting some cows and pigs.

  • People should also know how to store what they grow and raise, because when the collapse comes every vegetable, fruit and animal on your property will be stolen. After a short time, even peoples' pets will be taken for meat. Your vegetables and chickens will be raided, and the pet dogs and cats will be taken and killed for meat. People should realise that. It is going to be very nasty very quickly.

  • hey sootch where in n.c. do you reside??? i live in greensboro, and also have a place in boone!!

  • Gardening is great, but some catastrophes can kill your garden and make it impossible to grow another for a long while. Canned goods only last a year. I'm saving up to buy nutritionally dense foods with a 15 year shelf life from 4logevity.myefoods.com. There are other companies out there but they all have chemicals in them and some even have msg. and are expensive. If I can get enough money to buy the $349.95 pkg. it works out to be $.91 per serving. Wish me luck!

  • Excellent advice. But one question: For us in the city/burbs, especially in apartments, if TSHTF, the fuel required to cook rice and beans would not exist, not to mention be extremely hazardous. I've built a little alcohol stove that can boil water in 5 - 6 min. which would work for min rice (expensive) but not dried beans (25 - 30 min). Besides canned, can you think of a bean that will cook quickly? What if I grind up lentils into a meal and add that to min. rice? Would that speed up hydration?

  • @robbykfunk There are solar ovens and cookers that you can make or buy, you should look into those. There is also some kind of tube that boils water with the heat from the sun really fast. You should check it out too. I think it's called a solar tube.

  • stocking up on flour and honey, coconut oil are good ideas too..they have a long shelf life...one thing that would worry me about having a vegtable garden is looting...hungry people will take it and your chickens too..best save the seeds as a reserve...powder milk is good too along with dried fruits and nuts

  • I keep Mountain House meals in my car and at home. Need to stock up on the Number 10 can meals.

  • Excellent video! Thanks.

  • you think gardening is good for the soul..........well come to my di's house and help him i'll do your job

  • what bout the s510 bill where gov will take control of "seed".. do you think we can buy some now and put away.. i never gardened.. so i was wondereing should i prepard for that.. i know bill is going through its stages as i type and has passed 3 levels already so it should go through by end of year or begining of next. will they take over our gardens too

  • You're right Sootch, "gardening is great for the soul" - it's also healthy. Looks like a beautiful garden. I have done my share of gardening in the past. Looks like I will be doing more in the future. If people are smart, they will start learning now. Great advice.

  • By not reproduce does that mean not produce seeds that will germinate or not produce fruit?

  • @magicster123 Store bought or Hybred seeds will not reproduce. The seeds have been developed to be resistant to pest or disease and will not reproduce. It's important to get "Non-Hybred" or "Heirloom" Seeds. Google it to find suppliers. Thanks~

  • @sootch00 My family has store bought "Hybrid" seeds that have managed to reproduce.

If you ask me, they're lying.

  • @Redlightning7 Hybrid seeds are not Genetically Modified like what most folks think, as in Monsanto gene-splicing GMO. Hybrid seeds are the result of manual 'natural selection'. During this process specific plants are chosen for the best traits and quickly bred to create the redder tomato or greener bean. But those traits are only guaranteed for that seed/plant, the plant grown from its seed is not guaranteed to be as good. Just remember, the heirlooms of today, were the hybrids of yesteryear.

  • @sootch00 Most hybrid seeds will still reproduce, They just have only a very random chance to reproduce the same as it's parent plant......what will most likely happen is the seeds will be a random generation of the hybrid plants parents, one or the other.

  • @sootch00 Hybrid seeds will germinate - the issue is that they will not breed true. A particular hybrid may be a 2, 3 or 4-way cross - saved seed will produce, you just don't know which parent(s) will come through. Heirlooms or open-pollinated (OP) will produce "themselves".

Not to complicate things, but anyone wanting to save seed would do well to invest in a seed-saving book - there are lots of plants that, while OP, still require some know how to properly save seed from.

  • hey man i've been thinking but i want ur opinion on this..what about slim jims if u think about those for a sec they r meat there for the have protein and they r all so very light weight and small where they dont take up alot of room

  • Oh Lord, tomatoe (mater) sandwiches. I'm just down the hill in SC. Enjoy your vids. Y'all take care.

  • Thank you for the video, and God Bless You and your family.

  • Those are words of iron. I am still having a problem storing too much food in one spot. Yankee Prepper got me thinking about the hordes of people that will be roaming house to house in search of food, water and fuel. They will take, they will murder, and then move onto the next house. And there may be 30-40 of them in a gang. Too many to defend against. So I am caching my goods in strategic spots throughout the county. Use those large rubbermaid tubs from Walmart, and bury them full of goods.

  • during the war in serbia in the 90 there wasnt an animal around as they were all eaten

  • MRE´s are excellent SHTF food. Lots of (tasty)main dish options, still affortable price (if you live in U.S.A) and you can buy in bulk. Also highly recomend British 24h military rationpack. Little harder to find , becouse ministry of defense does not resale them too often. It has stuff for two days despite the "24h" lapel and taste is pretty good too. Russian MRE.... well.....taste one before you buy. German MRE, lots of pork und sausage :)

  • where can you buy the MRE's? I also live in North Carolina so is there any place here that you can buy in bulk? Very nice Videos btw.

  • @dxskatepwns I pick up MRE's at Gun Shows or Surplus Stores. Shipping gets expensive ordering online. I buy Mountain House Foods online because they are lightweight. Many thanks~

  • In the Northeast here, we have a very short growing season. We plant gardens every year, with mediocre success. Thank-you for the helpfull info.

  • god bless america? america is a corporate government where its legal system is designed by bankers, to the bankers and for the bankers whose greed have done several damage to the economy as well as to its citizens throught the last censtury and this one also.

now, what i want to know is whats so blessed about it?

  • @pingadomulatinha It hasnt been that way forever, and that wont last forever, the thing you are describing is not america, hes saying bless the proper america.

  • You might want to consider vitamins if your diet isn't complete due to lack of all the proper foods.

  • WOW! what a wake up call!!!! With 6 children i could NOT afford NOT to see thus video! THANK YOU!!!!

  • @leungbabe Six children! Yeah, that's a handful! Lol! Just a little bit every week and you'll be suprised how quickly it adds up. Thanks for watching my friend~

  • we're pretty prepared we have 2 50 gallon water heaters, 2 cases of 72 basic mre entres, a case of 12 mre full meals, a few cases of bottled water, canned food, and plenty of guns to defend the supplies. :)

  • Hey sootch get yourself some ox heart tomato's. There an old variety of tomatoes that are relay good. I love them on sandwiches and just eating with salt and pepper. I can't remember ware we got our seeds but we just save some every year for the next year.

  • GOOD JOB Brother

  • Good job Brother

  • Hunting also could be wasteful if you don't have a way to preserve meat but a garden can be better because you use what you need when you need it

  • 1st rule of survival is don't live in a major city Live in a remote area, temperate climate with rain.

I live in remote Rocky mountains- no growing season. Stock food that won't require a lot of fuel .

I am near stream, lots of 5 gal buckets, water filter, small solar, rechargeable batteries, SW and CB radio, firewood, propane, lots of toilet paper, guns, whiskey, ammo and extra of the above things to barter.

Amazing how valuable TP and soap become.

    Form neighborhood watch militia

  • Thanks for the excellent comments~

  • Nice vid.but in your case..people have no food and there homeless wandering around near your home..wont they try to steal food from your garden?maybe put up a fence?

  • I guess you haven't seen my other videos! Lol! I'm a gun reviewer. If it came down to a melt down, I'd have the garden hidden.

    Good point my friend~

  • If you can't garden for some reason...like you're living in the city...window boxes is the way to go. A lot of plants do well in window or patio boxes.

  • Thanks for the add-on, My friend~

  • ur a really smart dude,, if i had the money to perpare i would be all ready ready ,, are u talking about 2012???

  • Thanks~ I'm not preparing for a specific date. I believe that in todays world, it's smart to be preparing just a little at a time. Then you'll turn around and have a nice supply. Best to you my Friend~~

  • Sooch,

You talk about gardening. What to do with any extra? Have you thought about dehydrating or canning?

    Thanks for your efforts

  • We can if possible. This year we froze some. Unfortunately, that's not the best option in case of power outage but we're using that stuff now. Next year we will can everything. I have done dehydrating a few years ago and it's something I would like to get back into to.

  • A good source of protein, vitamind, antioxidents and good fats are lagumes and nuts. Fresh, not canned if possible.

  • Yeah, thats a concern of mine too. Im thinking about getting a map and highlighting out different backroads routes to get there, and having several routes in case i encounter blockades. Im wanting to put together a BOB too, cuz if it happened id pretty much grab my dog, guns, and hit the road.

    And cold pizza ROCKS!

  • If not, its always fun to break open the heating element, pour it in a bottle with a bit of water, put the cap on, shake it, throw it and wait for the boom (which is frowned upon doing it on the flightline at a deployed location. Just sayin. Lol)

  • I would however like to make a slight correction for you, if i may. The MRE's DO need water, at least if you want to have the drink and heat the food. You dont have to heat the food, but after eating them for 4 months while deployed i quickly found out the main meal tastes a looooot better heated.

  • An excellent point for sure...Pizza is the only acceptable hot /cold food... if there's a choice :)

    Thanks Bro~

  • Love your vids man, especially these kind, im trying to figure out how i can prepare. Im decently stocked with weapons, but trying to decide if i should do food or not (me and my dad have the plan that if things go bottom-up, ill bail and go to his house in the florida panhandle boonies, assuming i can get out of the city (i live in atlanta))......

  • My biggest concerns about Bailing out are Road Blocks and Check Points searching for "Contriband" or just plain out backed up traffic and being stranded.

I would want to head out at the first sign of trouble coming out of Atlanta especially. Might give you a major edge.

Many thanks my Friend and Best to you~

  • Where do you buy your MREs?

  • Military surplus outlets or Gun shows. I don't like buying them online because of shipping cost but that's an option too.

    Thanks~

  • i like the brita filter pitcher to purify water. we have a 5 acr lake in the front yard. you are giving me great ideas. thanks

  • Great points about the learning curve... I dig your general attitude about being prepared but not paranoid... awesome stuff!

  • Also i wanted to say.. i have started collecting seeds and will be starting a garden no matter where we will be next year. collecting seeds i know they are good for quite some time. we have beans. we need more rice. i have 7 to feed. so a garden would be wonderful

  • Yes, a garden is the only solution to having long term food. Especially with 7 mouths to feed! Best to you and your family~

  • I have watched a few of your videos.. like them very much. we have been thinking about this stuff much lately. i hate it when the cubbards start getting bare. we are currently in the works of selling my house and moving. here in the desert i can say. it is hard to do anything. it gets cold in winter and hot in the summer. if something did happen i think i would rather be in a more stable temp location. with more growth and animals..

  • I stocked my pantry will all kinds of canned goods and bottled water but my kids kept eating them :(

Any advice on what water purifier to get? Also do they sell antibiotic tablets you can just add to pond water to make it drinkable?

  • antibiotics kill the good bacteria that we depend on for digestion, immunity, and vitamin production. use berkey water filters, or Lugol's iodine drops, or colloidal silver to treat water.

  • I like tomato sandwiches. Fresh tomatose sliced thin with mayonase.

My parents garden is producing some nice green tomatoes ready for frying at the moment. Also the zucchini is ready.

If I'm on my farm in PA after the SHTF I'll have a good supply of game. Because anyone cumming on my property to hunt better get bullet proof fast.

  • thank you for posting this information god bless you

  • where can i find a place to buy mre's?

  • Military Surplus Stores are a good source. I usually pick them up at Gun Shows. There should also be online sources but you'll pay shipping. Thanks for posting.

  • One thing i am not sure of is when keeping water storage how long can you keep water till its no longer safe to drink?

  • From what I've found, water has no shelf life, but needs to be stirred or shaken to add oxygen. Worse care is it would need to be boiled or sterilized. I've been buying the 5 gallon food grade "Jery cans" at Walmart in the camping area and 50 gallon Food grade Blue Barrels for extended drinking water. The soda bottles are for cleaning and other uses because of the semi-toxic plastic. But to get started, I just wanted to get water stored. Even this water is better then no water. Thanks~

  • When I was a child my neighbor took me out in the woods in the Ozarks and thought me what was edible we never had to go more then ten feet to find food this helped me when I got lost when I made it to the road 20 hours later I wasnt hungry other then the ticks I was fine when I got out he thought me how not to get lost I need to relearn what is edible city life has not been beneficial to my survival skills

  • Protein Powder too

  • We here in Charlotte suspected about the homeless problem in our western forest.

Campers and hikers are reporting contact with these folks more and more. The Rangers are keeping a low profile on the susject. Even Uwharrie reports them.

You are doing good things up there. We are seasoned woodsman in my family but you keep them videos coming as we never stop learning and you are helping people. God Bless you and yours.

  • Thanks for the comments. I'm glad to hear it's helping. Many people out there are not sure where to start and I hope it will get them started preparing.

I was in the forest this weekend and saw more of the "permanent" campers. It's really sad.

    Take care neighbor!

  • Watch the HFCS! I live in town. I seen a few houses with livestock. This is not permitted. (code) Ever taste a real egg? Man they are good. I like the rabbit idea. Learning about edible plants is good too. I put PDFs onto memory stick. If the net goes down- I have them= to read. Or even if I am out and about. yesderday things looked very normal. Healthy in fact- my block. Kids playing people -happy. I am pleased. As blight can be fast, and hard.

  • Your just so good at this. So calm and sensible about what people ought to be paying attention to. Good tips. I fear that if this ever happens it will be bad for so many not prepared. May I suggest that a ham radio and knowing morse code would be a plus as well. Contact is going to be controlled so you might need to know these. God Bless.

  • I started my garden indoors sprouting my seeds back in February. We built a square foot garden and transplanted the seedlings in March. I just harvested my first zucchini squash yesterday. Due to the heat setting in here in Phx (it's 100 degrees now) our gardens need to go in early. The tomatoes do well here in the heat though. We are getting a couple hens and are busy working on a chicken run. Can't wait for the fresh eggs!

  • Thanks for the post. Always great to here additions to the plan :)

  • Another great video! I look forward to the list of good books you mentioned. Oh and howdy neighbor! Didnt know you was in the Tarheel too until this video!

  • I'd love to get some MRE's but they are just so freaking expensive.

  • Great videos!

    Thank you for posting!

  • Hey, thanks for the comments!

  • Always keep some radish seeds on hand even if you don't like them. They are ready to harvest within 30 days of planting them usually. Not the best tasting thing to plant but it will get you by.

  • Excellent point. My radishes are coming along nicely :) Thanks

  • I was wondering how you prevent the rabbits from eating the garden?

  • Excellent question. I am putting up a light fence around the garden. I plan on putting it up this week. I found "Wildlife Netting" at Lowes that's very inexpensive and easy to put up and take down after the season ends. I'll show it in an upcoming video. Thanks for the post.

  • Electric or solar powered fence works well also.

  • Don't forget to always save your seeds as well. Just take a coffee filter and gently place fresh tomato (or other) seeds one by one on them, leave out a few days to dry out. Take a marker and write what seeds they are on the filter and then store in a paper envelope for next year:) and if you are using Heirloom seeds this is very very important to do:)

  • Thanks for the post Gemm!

  • Great video, My wife and I want to start a garden!

  • Excellent! It's great no matter what. Nothing like fresh vegtables.

  • Another awesome video Bud! Some fine looking young men there too. Another extremely fine video with great essential points. Popeye has to have his Spinach every day. This is a highly valuable video for anyone who has enough room to grow veggies or fruits. You are also correct about your notions about hunting out the resources, if everybody were to start hunting for food. The MRE's and snack bar items you mentioned were a nice touch too. Very Cool!

  • Thanks for the post. Always good to hear from you! I'm getting ready for a kids gun safety vid with my older son. He's really starting to enjoy the Sport.

  • That sounds great, looking forward to it!

  • Great video!! I agree, you need to figure out how to grow food ahead of time. It is not something you want to figure out when you really need it. I am a city girl and dont know much about growing food. My first attempt at raising chickens was a disaster. I think I burried them to deep. LOL Made you smile. Good Day!!! Shannon

  • LOL! That sounds like something I'd do. Even if you can have a small herb garden to get started, getting your hands dirty is key. If you're still in the city, I hope you have a place to retreat to. Thanks for the Post... I needed a good laugh.

  • That is what I said the wildlife will go quick. we almost wiped out the buffalo 150 years ago when compared to today there were not many people, can you imagine what would happen now ?

  • EXcellent point!

  • what exactly do you mean by seeds that reproduce?

  • The seeds offered in most places are Hybrid seeds. There are Genetically Modified to resist disease and grow stronger. They will not reporduce so you have to buy new seeds next year. If you buy "heirloom" seeds, you can harvest the seeds to replant next year. There are many sources on the internet. It's worth it. Thanks peajinx :)

  • I wish I owned some land. Damn condo.

  • All my kids are grown and gone, but when they were little they enjoyed working in the dirt with me. Of course as the boys got older it was a fight over who was running the tiller....LOL.

Depending on the run date, and the tempature that they are stored. MRE's will last 15 years.

  • I can't wait until my guys are fighting over the Tiller! LOL!! Thanks for the MRE info.

  • its good to get the kids in to it . great vid keep them coming

  • Thanks Amigo!

  • Good tips! You should check out RodneyHampton's channel if you haven't already, he's planting a garden too.

  • Thanks, I really like his videos. Highly recommended.

  • crop rotation is very important, have you tried those upside down tomato plants that was on tv? I wonder if that is a BS product or not.

  • Save you cash dude! Drill a hole in a five gallon bucket and hang it...gesh......

  • I've seen them at Lowes. I think they should work. Thanks for the input.

  • Great video thanks

  • Thanks for your series! I woke up about a year ago and started getting busy, problem is for me, I don't think I will ever feel totally prepared. I think I drive my husband crazy, I started pulling him down the rabbit hole with me and He is totally on board. I am glad to know there are others in NC who have taken this attitude as well. Keep up the good work. I have been thinking of making a few vids about my family's preparations also, to help those who may be on the fence. Thanks,Noreen

  • Thanks Noreen! I'm glad your husband's on board. It would be difficult doing this alone... buy the way, there are many of us in NC :) It makes an excellent Rabbit Hole! LOL!

  • Pintree seeds @ superseedsdot com

Johnnys select seeds both out of Maine. I have been buying from both for many years and I HIGHLY recommed them. Just save some for me ; ) They have many heirloom and organic seeds too.

P.S. on your bars, be sure to avoid GMO (soy,potatoes,etc...)

  • Great info. Thanks for the sites!

  • I started my first garden a couple of weeks ago, and I am loving it!

  • Excellent Gemm, plus it's always nice to have fresh veggies! Thanks.

  • Get yourself some chickens, I get seven eggs a day. I will not eat any eggs from the store anymore, they taste like cardboard by comparison. I might put up a vid with my chicken setup. Peace.

  • I've been wanting to get chickens.. plus my Mother-N-Law hate 'em! LOL! Thanks!

  • Thank you , Great Series !

  • Thanks for the post.

  • you can also grow potatoes indoors 365 days a year, see pioneer livings video called

Growing potatoes 365 days a year.

This is in addition to your normal garden, just some extra insurance.

I keep my seeds in the freezer, then when ready to plant get out for a week, then germinate in a damp tea towel, then plant what comes up, this way your seeds will last almost forever, i have planted seeds after 6 yrs, no trouble.

    Good video

  • Excellent points! Thanks for posting!

  • I actually got a dehydrator and learned how to make beef jerky, for christmas. My dad knew I liked it so he got it for us. We always have alot of beef around so we could make a bunch of that.

I'm gonna try to go to my gun shop and check those MREs.

  • My folks had a Dehydrator when I was growing up. I had forgotten about it, so thanks for reminding me and the post!

  • The only downside is, mine is electric. I think it can take batteries though so it's ok.

I wanna learn how to make beef jerky with no electricity.

I think I'm gonna get a 30-30 and a remington model 700 shotgun. When I say "I'm" I mean buy my dad them.

30-30 is 200-300 and I can get a model 700 for 200. I'm selling all my stuff and I'm saving up for them now. Can't wait!! I also want to get him a ruger p95 but he didn't seem to care for it when I told him about it.

  • Well thought out and simple. 5stars.
