Transfixed is correct. I've had the pleasure of seeing him 18 or 20 times over the years, I always bring friends who haven't seen him and we sit close. In the 70's he could play for 4 hours without a break, come back for 3 curtain calls and still, then, as now, its like, "Its over?", "Its time to leave?" Transfixed.
one of the most famous guitarist's guitarist's of the 20th century . adaptable, unstoppable, articulate, seasoned and funny. his skill as a composer alone will far outlive him and his playing. if you EVER get the chance to see him live, don't pass it up and get as close as you can. he has an access to something when he plays that makes it impossible to be anything but transfixed. a true master.
Do you know what venue he was at for this performance? I was at the Union hall in Madison over 20 years ago and I remembered him playing this song. Leo looks a little older than I remember him, but I remember he broke his strings during this performance on his 12 string and left them uncut which caused them to vibrate at the ending of the song before he played this one....Could be a coincidence, but who knows..
I believe this was recorded for Home and Away in Canada. I saw him a couple times at the Union in Madison as well. Great venue back then, but I haven't been there for probably 20 years myself.
Am I just crazy, or is that thing going out of tune as he plays? 12-strings are so hard to keep tuned up as it is, but he's getting on it hard and picking all those tiny stretchy strings and they start sounding sick by 3/4 the way through the song.
A little, but he does so many slurs, slides and bends that it isn't significant enough to take away from the song imo. Still sounds great, unless you have perfect pitch, but in that case to bad for you =P
It's definitely the video transfer's fault. YouTube can mess things up; I have seen this clip on DVD many times, and he's well in tune throughout the whole piece. His technique is pretty much flawless -- I've seen the close-ups of his hand, and I have no idea how the hell he does it. Ah well.

I call it the "Kottke Thumb". :D

I'm pretty sure Leo Kottke's thumb isn't made of skin, bone, tissue, blood vessels etc, but of only one ingredient: Pure awesome.
