I'm not a fan of the Fiona version at all, just not my taste -- lacks the drama of Simone, and the vocal prowess of Garland and Fitzgerald. Just my opinion...
This is the best version of this song. I also like other renditions like Ella Fitzgerald's live at Montreaux, Louis Armstrong and even Fiona Apple, but Nina has them beat.
Different and soul depth for sure....whos is better? who cares.. enjoy all and be proud we can.............. apples and oranges both taste pretty good enjoy life and enjoy talent when it comes our way.................
@wyldeeyed Yeah they bring up different images to me with the way they're singing. Fiona's version is almost like her now ex partner has just walked out the door and she is singing it to him in anger and sadness. Whereas Nina's version is as if she is alone at the piano at midnight singing it with true heartbreak. Maybe that's just me but that's what I get when I hear their versions. I could write a paper on them!
I'm sorry, although this is ok I prefer Leigh Harris' version at the end of the movie "Eight Men Out", it fits the period of this music's conception better. Remember the movie is about the 1919 "Black Sox" and this music came out in 1918 and has a jazz age feel to it and should be sung that way.
@PetericL That's fair enough, I've just heard Leigh Harris' version and it's very good although I've never seen that film. I think every singer approaches the song in a different way and brings something new to the song. But that's the beauty of After You've Gone, and music in general, it's so versatile and universal.
this song speaks to me on so many levels, i had a guy in my life for ten years, who just up and left one day, no reason no explanation, i know i wasnt perfect but he sure as hell wasnt either. i hope one day he comes back heart broken so i can tell him off lol
@mscminton I had a guy do the same to me, after 6 yrs. Then after 1 yr apart, he wiggled his way back into my life only to do it again. It happens to a lot of people I guess. Luckily there is music out there like this to help during those times, good and bad.
@hlokaty well i hope you learned your lesson the second time!!! I joke and say I want him to crawl back but I know i would be better off never to see him again!!
In music almost everything is built upon something else. Just realized here what (or who) may have inspired the phrasing style of Shirley Horn. Anyone agree?
NINA is for ever alive in my heart and soul...1 of the greatest people ever have walked the planet if ya ask me!!!thanx 4 sharing this with the rest of the world!DJ EL C
@elduroduroduro I'm not sure if it's the case that a particular version is 'better' - because what does someone class as better? I love Fiona Apple's version and I love Nina's version too, they both have their differences and they both send shivers down my spine! :-)
@crazypianolady Very well put. I am also tired of people trying to start a debate on who they deem the best, or who has the best of all renditions. They are significant in their own ways, and artistry is what the person feels and incites in others, and there is no scale on rating feelings and emotions.
This is My ALL TIME FAVORATE From Nina Simone & thats saying a lot , I can't Believe the World is hearing it too , The Cassette that this was on was ripped to shreds from over playing , now it's on YT ..... can't say anymore ...
The only cover of Nina Simone's I don't prefer to the original version is Ne Me Quitte Pas by Jaques Brel. Everything else she's covered is the peak of any performance of that song.
Case in point: this song, I Put a Spell on You, My Way, House of the Rising Sun, Here Comes the Sun, Who Knows Where the Time Goes, My Baby Just Cares for Me, Feelings, Strange Fruit, Lilac Wine, You'd be So Nice to Come Home to...and the list goes on. Just listen to them. No comparison. Genius.
Some people could win the lottery and still complain about having to drive to pick up the check instead of having it brought to them. Don't be such an ingrate, be thankful for the music. With all the copyright hurdles, it's difficult enough to post audio-only uploads--concert footage is often out of the question.

Awesome! I just listened to Fiona's version and love her delivery of the lyric but hearing Nina deliver on both piano AND voice is inspiring.

Oh my God what a moving performance! Absolutely beautiful at this slower tempo. Here is a jazz performer singing with emotional honesty.

@crazypianolady And it was all started with Judy Garland's version. Which of course is a classic. Done in a way only she can.
