It was plain to see that JMS lost his mojo the minute season 5 came out. Legend of the Rangers confirmed it and Lost Tales only nailed the coffin for the last time.
Did they kick out Foundation Imaging and hand the CGI over to the neighbours' kid?
Why did they employ an ugly crap actress for an almost entirely physical role when a real martial artist would be cheaper and look less pathetic flailing around !?
@Thunderyend When they hired her, she wasn;t going to have to do that stuff. As the production progressed, they didn't have the budget for the weapons console JMS wanted to do, so they improvised that wire rig firing system for her. Obviously, that didn't turn out so well. Had the show gone to series, they would have replaced it pretty quickly.
Oh my God... maybe JMS had just seen an episode of "Power Rangers" while drunk, and thought it would be a great idea, putting it into production before sobering up...
Isn't that ship supposed to be cursed, old and crappy? If this show had gone beyond a pilot movie, they would have upgraded the weapons of that crappy ship...
Say what you want about the bad things about this show (the silly weapons system, the overly-chatty bad guys, etc.), this pilot had plenty of promise. Shame it never went anywhere. I'd rather watch a bad Babylon 5-show than reality-TV or wrestling...
What the hell? Hmm... let's see... no emotion, no acting, no spontaneous reactions, lawnmower man effects, power ranger grunts. Yeah... I'm glad I watched this first before subjecting myself to 60 minutes of pure horror. Lost Tales sucked too. This is why you usually take a project away from the creator and give it to someone else.
I had to double-check the credits and make sure JMS really did write this and intended for it to be a real pilot for a real series. I can take a lot but zero gravity tai-chi for firing weapons?
i admit, i wanted to see this flick because of the B5 links... but it was rather saturday morning cartoonish and i can't believe i spent money on renting it. at least the lost tails were good. i think they need to do a big screen B5 movie. lets face it, B5 and thier ships and plot lines were far more interesting than ST. in ST everyone lived in a eutopian communist civilization, in B5 they were still dealing with our everday crap. @ScreamingTc "he had a love of ships ramming and crashing into each other?"
I did and it has always bothered me. it made sense when adama sent the pegasus on the starbase, because cylons seemed to be really clueless on anything tactical, but in babylon v it worked every fraking time they tried it, one should have by this point realized you should keep the distance from dying ship lest it take you down with it.
i liked the ramming option in buck rogers countdown to doomsday because(...)
@Eikinkloster The two times that the ramming didn't feel forced were with the Churchill ramming in Severed Dreams. It did feel like a desperate enough situation to warrant it, and the ramming of the destroyed into the Minbari ship in 'In the Beginning'. Mostly because if the Minbari hunted down and killed crippled ships, then there's no point in thinking of surviving to fight another day. Taking as many of the bastards out with you as possible becomes the only option available.
@ScreamingTc (...) in buck rogers countdown to doomsday the ships were designed to ram and get away with it. not this Muslim suicide bomber style of JMS ships.
You know, having a virtual reality battle control room like that isn't a bad idea. You can see all around you, aim in any direction. But the idea of punching air to shoot your lasers is just retarded. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea.
They had something great with B5 Crusade. Then they made LOTR, the complete opposite, almost. Only thing worse, an intergalactic team of wrestlers which TnT would probably go for, or worse still a star trek movie from rick berman.
@xsf908 It is not known with certainty. Supposedly, they are agents of the Thirdspace Aliens (or some cosmic malice that is so advanced, it dwarfs the Shadows, the laws of the universe bend to their will), bestowed with highly advanced gifts by their masters.
Wow, I didn't realize there was so much hate for this film. I thought it was an interesting experiment in making a more light-hearted, adventuresome addition to the B5 franchise. Maybe I'm just not as picky a B5 fan as others, but I actually enjoyed it.
Sure, the weapons system is a little cheesy, but it was also pretty innovative for an American sci-fi show. I bet if they had had the chance to develop it some more, it would have worked better than people think.
O my God! As a great fan of the original series I am in awe about the sheer amount of stupid JMS is capable of bringing in one singular scene. I have the movie on DVD as part of my collection. Never watches it though. This moron face looking at me with a confidend smile not backed up by character warned me. Luckily so.
i've been watching the babylon 5 ultimate box set i just got, and i was loving it.... right up until this film!
it's so strange that Straczynski would make something like this... something so un-B5 like.
Its bloody strange, its so far from real B5 that i just tried to watch it as a random sci-fi film... but you cant cos of G'Kars constant fan service (hey, im a fan and i do feel well serviced by him tbh). But even if you can look at it like that, its still a fucking awful sci-fi :(
Don't think I've ever seen anything more insanely ridiculous than the weapons control scenes at 1:05 and elsewhere. The scenes where this silly girl was both punching and kicking (while suspended like one of those plastic toy monkeys which used to hang from the rear-view mirror of many people's cars years ago) were especially hilarious. Her yelling like a crazy person only added to the humor.
Did the valen have any guns at all? If earth and minbari made this thing, they had a horrible committee. Earth and Minbari battleships had weapons out the wazoo.
I refuse to call this.... this.... this... thing a Babylon 5 film. It has as much to do with Babylon 5 as my grandma. Thou at least my grandma talks like a Vorlon...
Hero1980 > "Good idea for weapons system fire control."
Are you kidding? Such a system would be extremely inefficient - the person involved expending far more energy than necessary to get the job done while other, much easier, methods would accomplish the same thing.
Not to mention if the person was out of shape, difficulties in three dimensional combat and human perception. if the ship was damaged in the individual just smashed into the floor and of coarse if the individual in question was incapacitated and no-one on board was a goddamn ninja!
angrydead > "incapacitated and no-one on board was a goddamn ninja!"
LOL. Funny, but also absolutely true. For survivability, a weapons system must be extremely redundant, including the operator. Ideally, nearly anyone should be able to easily step in during a battle to keep that weapons system operationable. You describe several situations where that would not be the case with this particular weapons control design. I can think of one or two more.
Their's also issues in the practicality of it as a weapon, even if everything runs smoothly it's almost impossible for the operator to fight several opponents at once attacking him differant angles.
I think it was. GKar knew that, that's why he was so intent on helping him. His parents would have known he was a target and Sheridan trusted G'Kar. Gkar's speech to the Gray council about knowing someone just like him, the President of the alliance, hinted toward that. Too bad the screwed Rangers up. It's premise was solid but the execution was abysmal.
i know this is a 6 month old comment (tho im sure you wanted to watch this vid again ^^) but i thought i'd just tell you: Straczynski wrote and produced this thing.
I like to think that someone who hated B5 and wanted to kill it had kidnapped his family and forced him to do it.
Just awful. There are so many reasons this is a bad idea for a weapon system (not even including "looks ridiculous"). As someone who loves anime, this actually reminds me of the sort of system they might use in that genre... except this is B5 (space opera) AND live action, hence it looks utterly stupid, not cool. But then, LOTR (original acronym, by the way!) is - sadly - really poor overall.
This scene is as horrid as I remembered. Looks like a cool ideal for a weapons system, that was poorly executed. Event with the greatest of Sci-Fi franchises, one always has a "Turkey". A blemish on a rather "Cool and Original" franchise that was Babylon 5 .
lol 'fire at will.......direct hit, colony destroyed' i think if this had intentionally been made as a B5 spoof for the fans it could hav gone from dire to great with little change XD
This was the prime example of what happens when budgets get cut.. bad actors get hired, and worse stories get written. Sad end to the B5 story.... much like Crusader.
yeah but even crusade vas much better then this crap for example those ships are so bad even old hyperion class cruiser is better battleship then those 2 i will probably never understand why they made this shit
an established character that is comfortable with role can make it work but im sure its an effot ... just take a look on G'kar role .. you can see difference ... although weve seen better from him due to dialouge and cutting ... i feel he was the only one to carry ... from an established character stand point
yeah uh... if it wasn't part of the babylon 5 universe i would say that i'd almost rather watch andromeda than this. there are so many tangents i could go off on but instead i'm just going to say that i wish crusade wouldve been completed
I was really disappointed with how they portrayed the Rangers in this movie. During the regular B5 show, the Rangers were top-notch, battle hardened, baddies. No wonder these puff balls got the worst ship in the lot!! And they completely ruined,'We live for the one, yada yada' by saying it over, and over, and over...well you get the idea.
Rangers got ruined by that stupid weapons interface. The Hand "toy ships" were pretty interesting though. And I actually liked that flying brick of a ship that the prototype Valen design.
JMS blamed the Patriots/Raiders Snow Bowl game for the ratings failure. I'd say blame the bad writing and overall crapiness of the show. My roommates were watching Legend of the Rangers so I went to my parents house, watched this game and had a great time. Got back to my apartment and my roommates were talking about how Legend was as bad as an episode of Voyager....
oh dear... I just hope that Lost tales is better than this. And why is the targeting system so strange...I mean really if they lose power in that holographic system theyre pretty much blind... weird
Wow, I have the DVD box set and have never watched this because of how bad everyone keeps saying it is. Way to go confirming my fears, that was a fecking joke!
I loved Babylon 5 and personally i thought Legend Of the Rangers had potential. And yes the targeting system was kinda dumb they should have had the whole bridge doing that with none of the kicks and punches. Star Trek came no where near B5. That teleportation business is all too convinient.
I just thought about how retarded this story line was. How come the ship they were trying to rescue committed suicides in the end...that's was dumb and a waste of energy.
In what way were B5 and DS9 a co-production? As far as I know, the only link between the two is B5's objection to DS9's original finale, which was almost the same as B5's. That's why DS9 has such a poor ending.
Pretty odd rangers as well. The rangers in the series were professional, inteligent troops. The ones in this are poor by comparison!!! They courtmarshal one for pulling out when his weapons break, for goodness sake!!!
long live star trek. And I never understood that whole 4D (not 3d) tactical room. but this leave me with one question...would it not be smarter for the captain to be in that room and the tactical officer on the bridge? I mean seriously...where the ship is going is the captain concern and no one else's. How can the captain give commands if he don't know what the battle field look like.
Considering that the tactical room is also where the weapons are fired, and the part in the name tactical would relate to the tactical officer. Also, wouldn't it be smarter for the captain to stay on the bridge, rather than go on a landing party where a red shirt is always killed?
Please tell me this movie wasn't made by Stazcynski.. Ugh.. It ruins babylon 5 for anyone who is not aware of the true glory of the original series and first few movies..
IIRC these are the ships they used before the whitestars came online, when the IA took over so mant policing duties they refit them and started using them again. As for the tageting system, its workable if your trying to make a system a retarded monkey could use, but you would need four of them to cover 3d space. With only one their is to much space open and far to much chance of getting dizzy.
WTF, was JMS thinking?

MISANTHROPE00 3 years ago
lol 'fire at will.......direct hit, colony destroyed' i think if this had intentionally been made as a B5 spoof for the fans it could hav gone from dire to great with little change XD

g-gundam.....but the ship..... by the movie was old as dirt.....been through 3 wars, been shot to hell and back, and still in service....

A Babylon 5 sequel was never going to work.

This was the prime example of what happens when budgets get cut.. bad actors get hired, and worse stories get written. Sad end to the B5 story.... much like Crusader.
Kingonads 3 years ago 5
yeah but even crusade vas much better then this crap for example those ships are so bad even old hyperion class cruiser is better battleship then those 2 i will probably never understand why they made this shit

The commander sees an entire colony get destroyed, and he says "No...." in the most uncaring tone of voice. Babylon 5 was great, this isn't.

yeah the reason i liked B5 so much was because it WASNT this damn scifi channel shit that caters to idiots. at least they still have chris franke

Much like Star Trek, the B5 universe has not yet reinvented seat belts.

*giggle* It's funny. I did enjoy the end of the movie, though. Clever.
JMS has joined the ranks of Chris Carter: excellent original show, but can't hold a spin-off to save his life.
The direct to dvd movie was good, here's to a return to the original characters and the Babylon 5 station itself.
annex18 3 years ago 2
I turned this show off at this point i thought: what the fuck has JMS done to his own creation. Its Power fucking Rangers.
Pathetic.

Nothing beats the original B5. Notice the actors in the original were not ALL super good looking.
Even Delenn is not super good looking.
She is attractive but not hard body model type which makes it more realistic.
OldDood 3 years ago 6
Yes, this is NOT JMS's finist hour.
This movie sure smells of Suits at the network taking control.
Now why could not the 'Weapons Screen' simply drop down over the bridge like on a White Star?
To jump into a hole in the wall is kind cheezy.
Also they HAD to put in all these 'good looking' actors and of course it is the Humans that are better then everyone else.
OldDood 3 years ago 3
OMG Power Rangers shite no lol
xLDZx 3 years ago
Man that was one of the worst piece of shit I´ve evern seen. They actually filmed an entire show? That sucks.
What is best is the mimbari´s name: Delan. Talk about creativity.

bad things to have for new roles ....
an established character that is comfortable with role can make it work but im sure its an effot ... just take a look on G'kar role .. you can see difference ... although weve seen better from him due to dialouge and cutting ... i feel he was the only one to carry ... from an established character stand point
hoppermantis 4 years ago
It might be fun to be in that virtual combat thing, punching space ships, but it's a bit silly to watch.
nutherefurlong 4 years ago
They must have been under severe budget constraints. The movie stank. Now Babylon5: Crusades was great! Too bad TNT cancelled it.
EVariation 4 years ago
yeah uh... if it wasn't part of the babylon 5 universe i would say that i'd almost rather watch andromeda than this. there are so many tangents i could go off on but instead i'm just going to say that i wish crusade wouldve been completed

- "I thought you said wyou didn't have enough to do any damage?"

I just might call that damage...

LkeVelvet 4 years ago
Shittest film ever. Wtf happened to this great series?!
aribenzane 4 years ago
Rangers got ruined by that stupid weapons interface. The Hand "toy ships" were pretty interesting though. And I actually liked that flying brick of a ship that the prototype Valen design.
PeoplesGeneral 4 years ago
I'm a long time B5 fan, I NEVER WATCHED THIS THING when it came out, good thing I didn't.
moonrules 4 years ago
JMS blamed the Patriots/Raiders Snow Bowl game for the ratings failure. I'd say blame the bad writing and overall crapiness of the show. My roommates were watching Legend of the Rangers so I went to my parents house, watched this game and had a great time. Got back to my apartment and my roommates were talking about how Legend was as bad as an episode of Voyager....

oh dear... I just hope that Lost tales is better than this. And why is the targeting system so strange...I mean really if they lose power in that holographic system theyre pretty much blind... weird

There is even better scene in this movie where Sarah destroys asteroids. :)

Wow, I have the DVD box set and have never watched this because of how bad everyone keeps saying it is. Way to go confirming my fears, that was a fecking joke!
YiddoBobbins 4 years ago
I loved Babylon 5 and personally i thought Legend Of the Rangers had potential. And yes the targeting system was kinda dumb they should have had the whole bridge doing that with none of the kicks and punches. Star Trek came no where near B5. That teleportation business is all too convinient.
Takudza 4 years ago
I guess I'm the only one who actually liked this one.I thought it had some potential and would have watched it if it became a regular series.
bugleboy624 4 years ago
I just thought about how retarded this story line was. How come the ship they were trying to rescue committed suicides in the end...that's was dumb and a waste of energy.
alphathewolf 4 years ago
uh....kinda a neat idea in theory.....but in reality it is useless... just not that user friendly...

babylon 5 and Deep Space 9 were actually a co-production!
greattlemurs 4 years ago
In what way were B5 and DS9 a co-production? As far as I know, the only link between the two is B5's objection to DS9's original finale, which was almost the same as B5's. That's why DS9 has such a poor ending.
joeyjoejoe996 4 years ago
Even power rangers won't use that kind of silly targeting system...
nedlee1 4 years ago
Pretty odd rangers as well. The rangers in the series were professional, inteligent troops. The ones in this are poor by comparison!!! They courtmarshal one for pulling out when his weapons break, for goodness sake!!!

long live star trek. And I never understood that whole 4D (not 3d) tactical room. but this leave me with one question...would it not be smarter for the captain to be in that room and the tactical officer on the bridge? I mean seriously...where the ship is going is the captain concern and no one else's. How can the captain give commands if he don't know what the battle field look like.
alphathewolf 4 years ago
Thats right, long live Star Trek!
NewFrontiers01 4 years ago
Considering that the tactical room is also where the weapons are fired, and the part in the name tactical would relate to the tactical officer. Also, wouldn't it be smarter for the captain to stay on the bridge, rather than go on a landing party where a red shirt is always killed?
Meyosan 4 years ago
Ah c'mon. You never wanted to punch out an evil enemy battleship? No, me neither. I guess we can cut them some slack. They can't all be winners.

i forgot about this movie. I guess this is what the Nintendo Wii will look like in the 23c.

I've got this on DVD. The effects and combat sequences make the original Battlestar Galactica look state of the art.
Alexj99782 5 years ago
Someone must have hated these rangers and gave all the better ships to the higher-ups. What kind of ship has this crappy interface?
I no longer want to collect the DVD.

That has got to be the stupidest battle scene ever. The lamest was the weapon system. Did they run out of fundings for this?
FENIXBLADE 5 years ago
Yes it was and the weapon system was probably what killed the whole damn thing.
Though someone claimed to have actual experience in the field said the system was, DON'T LAUGH, realistic and workable.

Weapons are out 10%? Wasn't this supposed to be pilot for another spinoff?

WTF kind of shitty ships are the rangers using? I thought they used white star class ships.
nuttsax 5 years ago
IIRC these are the ships they used before the whitestars came online, when the IA took over so mant policing duties they refit them and started using them again. As for the tageting system, its workable if your trying to make a system a retarded monkey could use, but you would need four of them to cover 3d space. With only one their is to much space open and far to much chance of getting dizzy.
