  • They were too early with this.. In ESC2010 or ESC2011, they would have ended in the top 10! With thanks to those amazing juries, who stop the brainless Europeans from deciding the results.. :-p

  • Just watched and listened again to this excellent song and this was a big chance for Portugal to win in 2008. Vania really deserved to win. Greetings from an ESC fan from Greece ;)

  • Very, very, very beautiful song

  • To bad that the jury was not back in that year. Portugal deserved definitly an top 5 position that year or was even the winner for me.

  • GREAT SINGER

    GREAT COUNTRY

    GREAT BACK VOCALS

    GREAT PERFORMANCE

    GREAT VOICE

    GREAT HOSTS

    STUPID VOTES!

  • If Eurovision had juries in 2008, this would have ended top 3 FOR SURE!

  • I love 'in crescendo' songs like this

  • Arrepiante.

  • i was amazed when she didnt even get top 10 its political bullshit

  • the best song Portugal ever made for Eurovision. portuguese soul in every part of the lyric. they should make more like this one instead of the weird thing of 2011.

  • @Lunatr I agree with you

  • @Lunatr I have to confess I was ashamed of that crap (can I say a bad word instead??) that was "representing" our country last year... Ashamed!

  • in this year, Portuguese song was in did the best!! And that's all of you saying the same: We are so underrated, it was so unfair!! But....... well, that's the rules of the game!!

And year after year we are allways there!! With DIGNITY!! And allways singing in our language: Portuguese. It really works for us someday in ESC?? I don't thing so, we are allone in this corner of Europe!! WHITH PROUD IN THE NAME OF HONESTY!!

  • THE BEST EVER!

The best song of the Eurovision2008

    12 points from Hong Kong=]

  • If Fado is played in 2012, we win for sure...

  • If only they instated the 50/50 votes in 2008..Portugal would probably have been in the top 5 :(

  • wow

  • The best song of eurovision song contest 2008!

  • Wow, this got the biggest reaction from the audience..

  • Bravo bravo! Bravo! Serbia loved that!

  • I listen to this song at least once a day. Thumbs up if u do the same thing!

  • Eurovision nowadays is not about quality but quantity...Russia won why????

  • @MarkoMiranda19 Because of Plush and shirtless Dima at the end!

  • Thanks to all people who are not portuguese and appreciate this song, this is the best song we ever had in the Eurovision Song Contest.

    Obrigado Vânia.

  • this song is the best prove we can have that ESC is a political/diaspora contest: never ever Portugal will win ESC because they just have 1 neighbor....

  • Nice song. Great voice.

  • this is perfection

  • OMG! She has that perfect controle over her voice. Powerful singing. Love it.

  • Thumbs up if you still hear this in 2012.

  • @Alphahumphrey2011 Nobody is,, It's 2011 --)

    Sinto-me orgulhoso.....

Preferem apoiar sempre as vizinhaças.

  • it was a wonderful performance!!!!! she did deserved win that year!!!!!!

  • That's fantastic!

  • Unbelievable that this didn't win!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the best song and performance of 2008 and one of the best ever all years, even now i listen and impressed, Vania has a fan in Turkey, hope to see Portugese victory one year with a song like this one.

  • Very nice!! Greetings from Greece!

  • this should have won, I bet it would if 50/50 system was used in 2008

  • It's amazing to see people from other countries say that they like our songs ^^

Some day we will win!! =^.^=

  • Serbia voted for this song but where was other countries ???? Wonderful song and interpretation.

  • this was amazing! brilliant! omg!

  • what an amazing performance!!! Didn't understand not a single word but she's really powerful why tha fuck didn't she win??? the best song!!!

  • @28thadude If you want any of us Portuguese people would love to translate it to you ^_^

  • I loved this song and thought it could have won the contest. Portugal have put some great songs in the contest in the past but dont come close. A shame I would love to see them win one year.

  • She sings like an angel. I'm from Belgrade, i voted for her... Even though I didn't understand the word this woman sang, the music and her performance were so powerful, she blew me away! Way to go Portugal, big kisses from Serbia!

  • It came up in 7th place

  • the best

  • portugal didn't win this eurovision contest because the only one who usually votes in portugal is spain. this contest is just about voting on neighbours, we only got spain as a neighbour.

  • @13tete13 when day the fishes will learn hot to talk and have cellphones, and there no one can beat us! muahahah! lol

  • 3 minutes of perfection <3

  • Maybe the best performance ever in eurovision. One of the greatest songs in the top 5 of the 00's and in the top 20 of eurovision of all time!AND OF COURSE THE WINNER OF EUROVISION 2008!SO UNDERRATED!

  • I didn't understand a word but I could still hear and feel the emotion in the voice and melody, a beautiful song indeed. ESC doesn't handle rock or soft and slow songs too well, especially when they are not in English...shame.

  • Portuguese is a beautiful language and those who can't understand that are really blind!

  • I cant believe how we didnt won. Literally Omfg

  • this music gives me shiver.. when i saw her singing this music at live, i didn't believed it was really she. it was just a shame portugal didn't win ESC in 2008

  • Too fat for to be winner.

  • Any English Translation of the lyrics, please?

  • Comment removed

  • @san7toss Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much, my friend! Efharistό poly (Thanks so much, in Greek)! Chris from Greece!

  • @Chris65959 De nada (You're welcome, in Portuguese) =)

  • @san7toss :) fantastic singer, fantastic music, fantastic perfomance and finally fantastic lyrics!

Having understood the lyrics-from your English translation-made me love the song even more.

By the way is that a "fado" song?

P.S.:Damned Eurovision alliances! In our memory and heart, YOU have been the real winner, by far!

  • @Chris65959 It is not Fado. But the song expresses a little bit of the tone of the Fado. This song "Senhora do Mar" represents a part of Portuguese culture, religion and tradition: it is about all the women that lost their men in the see, as a sailor, discoverer or fisherman =)

  • @san7toss What does a fado expresses? Is the song "Cancao do Mar" a Fado one? Thanks so much, San7toss! Obrigado! (Is it correct?)

  • @Chris65959

Fado means fate, a bad fate/desteny.

You can search Amalia Rodrigues to see what is Fado. Usually it's only performed by the singer and two or three guitarrists (with portuguese and spanish guitar).

Portuguese GGuitar it's wonderfull (for me the most wondefull guitar in the world but maybe I have a biased biased opinion) and if you want to listen to portuguese guitar of Coimbra solo you can search for >Carlos Paredes.

I'm sorry my english it's not the best .

  • @Chris65959 There are many types of Fado, Canção do Mar singed by Dulce Pontes I think it can be considered Fado but it's not pure Fado.

Canção do Mar it's a version of the Fado Solidao of Amalia Rodrigues, you can see him here, it's much more traditional Fado: watch?v=ke2F9vwpOCA

But it's a wonderfull music anyway.

  • @Chris65959

But there are more than this view of Fado. We have Humorous Fado, joyful Fado, etc.

But the most representative is the sad fado, the one that we can't dance, only with guitars, and the most wonderfull in my opinion.

Sorry again for my engglish, it's far from perfect.

  • @Chris65959 Usually Fado expresses sadness, loss, sorrow, tears, missing, etc, from the lyrics perspective. From the music perspective it is usually performed with Portuguese guitar. As already said you can search for Amália Rodrigues for typical old Fado and Mariza for "neo-Fado" as I'm used to call it.

    Yes "Obrigado" is correct =)

  • Is it possible for me to have the English translation of the lyrics, please?

  • the best song ever

  • the best song ever

  • THIS IS COPY OF MARIJA SERIFOVIC - MOLITVA 2007!

  • @nekserbia no, it's not a copy, this kind of music belongs to our culture... thats for sure! we don't copy nobody like a lot of the other coutries, who have afraid to sing in their own language... thats ridiculous...

  • @nekserbia I saw and listen Marija's song, and don't even sound like this one... I don't know what are you talking about, this song is so diferent that Marija's song...

  • @andrefcc3 I thought about performance....this thing with backing vocals holding her back etc. all copied from Marija Serifovic.

  • @nekserbia clean yout ears

  • @Kiara7165

cut the crap! Read my other comment, and you'll see what I mean.

  • WHAT AN AMASING SONG AND BEAUTIFUL PERFOMANCE

  • Yeah, "it doenst fit the ESC format"

ESC format = eurodanceshit + tacky pop tunes +blonde girls with tiny dresses

  • @CardozoSofia i agree honey! :D

  • @CardozoSofia lool

  • @CardozoSofia you probably have never watched eurovision the last 2 years to write such nonsense..

  • @CardozoSofia

    this should have win.....any year...........

  • @CardozoSofia exactly what won in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010

  • oh come on. So many here saying this should have won. It's a decent song yes, but it doenst fit the ESC format well enough to stand a chance. There is too little action and catchy tunes for it to stick in peoples minds. You need this to get lots of votes. This didnt have that.

  • @TheEcoApe So Molitva, sung in Serbian and with a choreography whith much less action than this one, wins (and well done, cause it was the best song that year along with the Slovenian entry by Alenka Gotar) and this fado masterpiece ends 13th. No, my dear, with jury and only jury this would have ended top 5, no doubt.

  • One of the best song from Portugal!

  • this was brilliant and Portugals best ever entry..it should have done much better than 13th

  • she really really have won. Russia with a very average song won instead. what do people have int their ears?

  • @MrClaudiojuan I meant "She really should have won.

  • I didn't like the song at the time, but now looking back i relise how good a song it was. Really disliked Russia winning, that just show'd that it had become far too pollitical. Believe this was the year when people in the UK at least, seriously felt we should withdraw.

I always think she's about to start singing in English, keep thinking i hear "I never"

  • @AngryAnt0 It's really great!!!! :D and I'm not saying this just because I'm Portuguese ;) in the part where you think you hear 'i think''..translating, she says: Ahhh dark waters...waves of sorrow, friezed the fire in my eyes...... and it goes on.. :P

  • if there was a jury in 2008 like ther is now, Portugal would have won and not only finish 13th

  • @simsdan001 i doubt the jury could have helped her that much, but she certainly would have been in the top 10

  • when will everybody understand that eurovision rating sistem is not based on how good your song is but rather on who your friends are...

i dont ever watch that thing because i got tired of all the politics involved

  • awesome

  • i dont understand why russia song win...

  • perfect

  • This song sends chills down my spine.

    Love it.

  • Indeed a very nice song. I love it. But for me the best entry of Portugal was in 2009!!!

  • Do we need to sing in english to win?

  • She looks like Adele!

  • @dUrAxE in 2008 we didn´t know adele ;)

  • (...) Love, what 's happened to you? Ah, black waters, waves of sorrow, Froze the fire in my eyes. Salty wounds, prayers in vain? Let his heart Beat next to me! Ah, black waters, waves of sorrow Froze the fire in my eyes He not sailing! And nobody sees you crying Lady of the Sea!
  • Letter: Lady of the Sea before you, I'm fallen Who comes and takes half of life and peace From this table, this house, now lost? Love, what 's happened to you? Lady of the Sea before you, my soul is empty Who comes and takes what is mine? O sea, bring me My endless love! Ah, black waters, waves of sorrow Froze the fire in my eyes He not sailing! And nobody sees you cry Lady of the Sea! Who comes and takes half of life and peace From this table, this house, now lost? (...)
  • @shady0176

You're translating things by words not by expressions. First of all, it's lyric, not letter (despite the fact that in portuguese it's the same word); second of all, there are some expressions which aren't properly translated like "black waters" - you should say "dark waters"; "nobody see you cry" - you should say "nobody sees you crying"; "let his heart beat next to me" - you should say "let his heart beat next to mine"; "he not sailing" - you should say "he will not sail again". =)

  • I was voted for this song fantastic Vania!!!! In Belgrade we've liked this song sooo much that zear

  • DEVIAMOS TER GANHO!

    THIS SONG SHOULD HAVE WON!!!!

  • If I'm not wrong, this song became 2nd (semi-final) and of course it was better than the fucking Russian entry!! Vânia didn't deserve 13th place!!

    Força Portugal !

  • Russia LOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • I dont understand anything of what she sings but i like this so much

    Its like poetry

    And what a breathtaking perfomance...

In which place did it end up?

PS russia sucked really bad that year

  • @diana1gr 13º :(

  • 13 th... :(

  • @diana1gr 2nd in the semi final 13th in the final

  • @diana1gr imaging that your husband is a fisherman and he's lots ou die in the sea, thats all about this song, senhora do mar, Lady of the sea

  • @diana1gr From the begining to 1:35 the translation is something like: Lady of the Sea Before you, you have me fallen Who comes and takes half of life and peace from this table, from this house, now lost? Love, where are you? Lady of the Sea Before you, my soul is empty Who comes and takes for herself what is mine? Oh high sea, bring me Endless love of mine Ah, dark waters, waves of sorrow Have frozen the fire in my eyes He'll not sail anymore And no one sees you crying Lady of the Sea
  • @diana1gr We ALL agree that Dima Bilan is the worst ESC winner EVER. That year Portugal, Armenia and Ukraine would have been better winners.
