I saw the movie at the drive in chicago ,but when I heard the song i thought I heard Curtis Mayfield singing it, maybe he sung it on an albulm before Claudine came out.
So sad that "The Powers that Be" designed a plan to separate the Black Man from the Family; In Claudine, you saw that If the Woman had a man at home he became a "liability" preventing her from getting any financial help. He wanted to stay, earn and provide but the "Theys" of this society wanted to make him a dead beat! shame on these strategists! And now they look at the offspring and wonder why they are all messed up! A daddy is crucial in the life of a child! We needed these Men!
@kjonesnewyork1 you are so right I just made a reference to this fact in my book. Now that our brothers are chosing the sister from another mother they make it impossible form him to leave the home today, and if he does he is diffinatly going to pay his due. it so sad what our mother's have/had to endure.
I tell u this we as africans in the world is still invisible we show the world being great, smart , loving , building foundation for the family, & look what happen ? What do we have to show for it being last of the human race ! Make us think right peace.
@JTBLACKMAN43 There is no last of the HUMAN RACE. YOU ARE A HUMAN OR YOU ARE NOT A HUMAN. THE PROBLEM IS THAT CERTAIN ENTITIES OF THE HUMAN RACE ACT AS IF THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES. WRONG ATTITUDE.
It's funny, this movie was first out b4 my time, yet, I grew up watching the old VHS tapes of it... funny how the 90% of us would be better off invisible~ instead of being pawns in the games of the 10% who run the world. Sorry, the recession is speaking through me....
I SAW CLAUDINE AT THE SUTTER THEATER IN BROWNSVILLE IN BROOKLYN NEW YORK...........A CLASSIC.........ME AND MY GIRLFRIENDS WAS IN LOVE WITH LAWRENCE HILTON JACOBS..........WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THE CAST OF CLAUDINE BESIDES JAMES EARL JONES & DIAHANN CARROLL........
saw this when it first came out.after my daughter was grown brought it on dvd for my kids to watch.it just made me laugh and cry all over again.our young just dont know what alot of single women have gone through to hold a family together.not only black women but women. we are the strongest force God put on this earth.ask all of those men who only had moma and he will tell you so.the movie had real characters/ i wish our young would stop killing each other and learn to enjoy their youth.
It is so ridiculous but the strife and the bliss will go right on through, right on through to have missed, all the things that hurt you so, no one will ever know, and so I will be invisible, that way I won't have to explain a thing, if you know what mean, I won't even have to been here on the scene, in a world that seems not for me, so privately I will be invisible that way I won't have to explain a thing---------
There will no no more lady's that sing like Gladys, Aretha.. those were the lives we lived.an these lady's song what love is about..the singers today don't have the Voice that have that Legendary Sound,,,I think i better get it together and sing and show myself and the lady's Singers of today what singing is all about..
YES!! my jam!..the whole album... was living right outside of Chgo in '74 when this hit. My mother also was a single mom with 6 kids at the time. People used to say how much she and Dianne Carrol looked alike. Heard this on KTSU this morning and had to look for it here. Thank you for the upload. - K/Houston
i'm sure this was the b side of midnight train to georgia? my sister used to play it as much as the a side. the end is great 'so i'll be invisble, invisble, invisble...'
@1starryeyedkid the flip side to midnght train to georgia was window rasing granny. The only two sided release from claudine was on and on and the makings of you.two yrs later, buddah released make yours a happy home.Mr welfare man should have been released as a single, with this as a flip.
If you think the soundtrack is classic, you must see the movie. Dianne Carroll was a Black entertainer that exuded a squeaky clean reputation. For her to play Claudine (a single mother with multiple fathers & on welfare) was a real risk for her. She did an excellent job on it.
THERE IS NO OTHER SOUND LIKE THE SOUND OF GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS. HAVE YOU EVER JUST HEARD A SOUND THAT YOU COULD JUST LISTEN TO ALL DAY? THAT IS GLADYS!!!!!!!!~~!
As a kid, I remember my mother playin' this song and I fell in LOVE. I wrote the words down, just so I got it right. Before, my mother passed away, I took her, my aunt and my man to a Glayds Knight concert in Concord, Ca. My mother later left us and went home to God. And it's one of my BEST memories. "To be Invisable"..............
@rhonzi Im 21 My parents did the same to me,Im thankful for that music filled with positive messages & harmony..Great to see other people keepin the spirit alive by passing it down to the generations.
The scene with the 2 boys on the Bicycle looking for Roop... and the littliest one wanting to be invisible from being misunderstood is etched.
Kudos to Mayfield for writing and Gladys and the Pips [and the musicians] for Breathing the necessary life into this track that speaks loud and clear as it was intended.
im only 14 yrs old life should'nt be tooken for granted i used to i wish i was invisible.... but this year 2010 im gonna stand up and do something about it fight for victory life is too short for all of this nonsense in the world all of this killingand disrimination has to come at rest i may be young but I's knows what im talkin bout! i can olny imagine what our ancesters were going through bebe we got to have God we can't do NOTHIN with out him!!!!wake up world wake up!

This was such a fun time in my life. The world has changed so much and people are just not the same anymore. What wonderful memories this song brings back!
Great song! "To be invisable..." I know how y'all feel. But to the last 2 posts, hold your heads up. It gets better, and pain is only "TEMPORARY" y'all. Yeah, it will rain in your life, but the sun eventually comes back y'all. Stay positive! Smile and love yourself. "The world seems NOT for me", oh no, nah-uh! Everyone belongs. You are not a "freak", rather you are UNIQUE! Remember that. You all have gifts, honey chile! Everyone is someone! Peace.

The harmony of The Pips takes away from the solitude and loneliness of the lyrics.
But adds to the anger and frustration of
"to have to take what you can get sure can
make a heart upset.
