Well yea, but the problem is people do have guns. Guns exist ergo some people will always have them, and if you take them away from law-abiding citizens, only lawbreakers will have guns. In that case I'd rather have a gun too.

And I'm a against violence. Just saying it's a double-edged sword.

They banned guns in Britain in 1995 and crime is up instead of down, particularly violent crime. Even if guns did not exist, criminals would still find other means of inflicting harm on their victims. Guns are a great equalizer against violent thugs. A small woman with a gun can fend off many much stronger attackers. If you are ever confronted by gang members with knives, you'll be wishing you had a gun. Wishing guns would go away is a very naive attitude.

I question this assertion. The latest data says something different. Intentional Homicide Rates by country in 2010: United States 4.8 per 100,000, United Kingdom 1.17 per 100,000. The UK number has been declining since 2000. That does not make the UK a perfect place. It does indicate, however, that the absence of firearms is positively linked to lower rates of homicide.

I'm an American, from Texas, and the gun regulations mentioned in this episode is so far from our attitudes about guns.  In Texas, people hang rifles in their pick-up trucks. It is true, we love our guns in America, especially Texas. Texans believe in ownership of property first. We are not concerned about the community as we are about protecting our own properties. That's a very Texas attitude. Not mine, of course. Most Americans keep guns but don't actually use them.

A firearm is a tool, as is any knife, hammer, or one's own bare hands. It is the individual who is responsible for any act for which the item in question is used. An argument can be made for restricting sale to minors and those with previous convictions for violent crimes. Failing that, no government institution has any ethical grounds to restrict an individual's right to own a firearm.
