Now if Brook Benton would be the vocalist as Jimmy and his group play this would make this all the mo better. If you have not heard Brook Benton sing Walk On the Wild Side, do yourself a favor and click on Brook Benton Walk on The Wild Side.
One of the things a great musician does is elevate the playing of the whole group. Jimmy Smith always plays with great sidemen because he makes them sound great due to the very high level of his performance. Not to take anything away from the guys he plays with, but like Jordan elevated the Chgo Bulls to a new level of basketball, Jimmy Smith raises the bar for his play, and we are the lucky listeners who get to hear the fabulous music. Thanks!
When Jimmy plays you forget it's a Hammond. When almost everybody else plays you can't help but be annoyed of that damn organ. That's why I play a Wurlitzer. At least I stand a chance.
@joepiedepoepie1000 Sounding original on a Hammond is difficult. I'm actually a guitar player of many years who did cultivate a recognizable style of my own and so I know that even on a Hammond organ a player can have a dead on sound that is unmistakeably their own. After 5-6 years playing an A100 into a Leslie 122 I began to get tired of the Leslie and preferred playing with the vibrato and chorus more. Ultimately I gravitated to the electronic theater organs. The Wurli 4500 is my calling (lol)
Many people might not know this, but the Hammond tone wheel organ is more similar to the electric guitar than any other instrument. Instead of a string vibrating in front of a long oval pick-up made of a thin wire wrapped around a non-conducting plastic bobbin with six tiny long narrow magnets ( magnetic poles of magnets are perpendicular and placed inside the non-conductive bobbin so that each align with string at a distance of approximately 1/4 inch) the Hammond tone wheel has 1 pick-up X 91.
@TheBlueb0ttle He was probably a little partial to those million dollar hands of his. On the hand I have to ask why have all of those welfare moms get theirs manicured in 2011. It's just life in America and it aint a bad one considering the options. Play it Jimmy!
From Jazz Scene USA, a great but short-lived Los Angeles TV show produced by the visionary Jimmy Baker and hosted by the incomparable Oscar Brown Jr. Though just a half hour in length, it was long on music and short on the superfluous. Jimmy Smith was in L. A., probably working at the It Club, and Baker knew enough to grab him for this show.
@JuicyOrganism The video shows that Jimmy Smith is playing through two Leslie boxes. Lately I found out that the type of those Leslie’s are 31H with one single speed rotors and has the nick-name tallboy’s. Can somebody in Holland, Switzerland, England, Germany or Belgium help me to find one of those boxes and let me hear how the sound is in real or maybe sell me one of those?
@JuicyOrganism Watch HD7100 's channel- Leslie Vibratone 31H tone cabinet , Stompin at the Savoy
Obviously there is some reverb going on with Jimmy's organ in the video that might even be added with the house PA system at the studio. HD7100 (Gary) is a very knowledgeable and an excellent player. He has an amazing collection ( does NOT sell) watch his channel.
Such a groovy tune with just a touch of that wide open country space.
