  • Thanks for this video! I'm a total amateur at shortwave radio and I just bought myself a Grundig S350DL for my first radio. I can't wait to use it. :)

  • Does that radio have a aux out?

  • How is the SSB/CW reception? What is the tuning rate of SSB in Hz.?

  • That's WWWV, in Fort Collins Colorado.

Canada is CHU Canada, with a male voice announcing in English and French Canadian which alternates back and forth.

  • I've got 3 Grundig radios, from small handheld to my largest which is a Satellit 800 which I use nightly and is my favorite radio... I like their equipment.

  • hey i was looking at buying one of these grundig radios from radioshack can you give me a little review on the ?? thanks !!

  • @chevyloverguy1 This radio has many pros and cons. The pros: it looks cool, has some nice features, decent reception, and is fairly portable. The cons: no SSB, hard to stay on one frequency (it likes to drift), and it's quite large. I also have an older analog shortwave radio from radio shack and I think it works just as well if not better than this one. But for a decent desk radio I would recommend it.

  • @chevyloverguy1 I have spent some time working on my Grundig S350. I have a longwire(5 or 6 feet in length) running from my radio's external antenna jack. It is connected to a tv antenna transformer which in turn is connected to a indoor passive vhf/uhf antenna. The antenna's sitting on my windowsill. It works for me. I love it.

  • awesome idea for the slinky antenna! sweeet, where did you learn that? cool lol, Grenich mean time, beep, beep, beep

  • @ellonysman I'm not sure where I read it. I think I was just searching for antenna designs and it sounded cheap and fun to set up. Thanks for the comment!

  • awesome idea for the slinky antenna! sweeet, where did you learn that? cool

  • nice radio!!!!

  • @owlsrock150 Thanks!

  • Ground the antenna to the radio. Should take out a lot of static. I like how at 2:09 your record light blinks to the audio of the radio

  • @Radninja88 Thanks for the tip, I'll try it!

  • Ground the antenna to the radio. Should take out a lot of static

  • Hi neighbor i live in Hamilton OH! Look at some of my videos!

  • @KC8YOQ Hi neighbor! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. BTW nice videos!

    -KI4RTG

  • @cornej92 I also have a slinky but mine is outside and is horizontal! Thanks for the reply!

  • @KC8YOQ Sounds good! No problem, thanks for checking out my video.

  • I wish this had side band.

  • @MrJohnnyrace Me too

  • @cornej92 My next rig will be.

  • thats WWV in Ft Collins, CO and Honolulu, HI. Google "Radio Station WWV"

  • @bradrnstyle Thanks!

  • The pinning time thing is a jamming signal they drop on Free America type radio stations.,

  • On 15000 khz you were hearing WWV in Fort Collins,Colorado,USA,which is a Government Service of The National Institute of Standards and Technology.you also heard CRI in Bejeng as well As WYFR.I myself have a Sangean ATS818ACS and soon a Tecsun Green 88 radio.73's,Brainy at BMSS

  • @brainman214 They use it as a jaming signal.

  • @brainman214 Sweet radios! Thanks for the comment!

  • that slinky antenna is hooked to the FM antenna ????

  • @mslcars2011 Yeah, to the FM and hooked in the back to the AM connector.

  • Good

  • WWV is from fort collins WWVH is from hawaii

  • shay shay

  • An outside antenna that is away from electrical sources are best, horizontal orientation lessons man made noise. Use shielded wire from the antenna to the receiver, helps prevent noise pickup. Take your radio and antennas portable to areas away from the city and you will see a big difference!

  • im trying to dx on a old boombox i have and it dosent work in the least bit why?

  • @geekforlifevandc Try an external antenna and have it out side....

  • put the dipole outside dude.

  • @JettaJ1 I would if I could

  • How can there be a chineese broadcast at 14310, ham band? see 3:28

  • @VA2SG I would say this radio suffers from imaging and most likely from antenna gain. These receivers are too hot! I see the same on my G5 and G3....

  • I never found anything good on the SW band. It's usually some religious nuts preaching or people talking in a foriegn language. I like this radio for it's excellent AM and FM reception. I don't really care for the SW.

  • Comment removed

  • @john17972 I am totally in love with SW radio. It is fascinating to be to listen to broadcast from different parts of our world. AM and FM are boring to me,the same old crap. It's all a matter of choice. Different strokes for different folks. Great video by Cornej92. He is a regular MacGyver with his antennae creations. Totally awesome.

  • @musicman195959 Thank you very much!

  • Pô, mais que bosta, heim!

  • @v8fepasa O que é uma porcaria?

  • ive seen this at radio shack

  • I have the same radio! I get really good reception in the lower bands(3-10mhz) with a 50 ft outdoor wire ant... Have you found any decent software yet to use your soundcard to decode morse code or packets?

  • just in case nobody told you previously, the station you were listening to at 15 MHz is time signal station WWV from Colorado. the time signal station from Canada is CHU on 3.330 MHz. by the way, a metal slinky used as an extension of a shortwave radio antenna is useful. I live in an apartment and it is hard to receive shortwave radio stations inside.

  • @aurora990 Thanks for the comment! Does your slinky antenna cause interference issues in your apartment?

  • @cornej92 the level of interference I receive on my shortwave radio with a slinky antenna varies depending on the time and frequency. my ideal time to listen to shortwave radio is in the night mostly late night to early morning when interference is minimal.

  • where do you live? your reception on chinese radio station is so clear

  • @mexicotaco0913 I live in Northern Kentucky near Cincinnati, Ohio.

  • @cornej92 The chinese part of KY. That explains it.

  • I see that Thank You.

  • @JHAAMYEESS Yes, it goes down to 2300 khz.

  • Thanks for the video... What did you hook up the 18 ga wire on the back to?

  • @wakeupsheople He connected it to the antenna lead in the back.

The back has two clamp leads: one for an antenna and one for a ground wire. If you have this model, the antenna lead is the red clamp.

  • Awesome, man. Thanks. My wife would kill me if I set up that antenna system...but someday....someday.

  • @ThePretzelHead Have you considered using speaker wire for an antenna? It can be hidden pretty well around the perimeter of the room if you lay it on the floor. It has worked well for me in the past.

  • @cornej92 I'd like to aquire a portable shortwave radio for listening and emergencies but I'm on a budget. What's the cheapest and best shortwave that can pick up most every signal?

  • i get all my info from black ops but is it true that they really hammer these numbers into spys heads.

  • @topramen365 No, why would "they".

  • Just get a Ten-Tec Universal BFO or only $11 bucks from the Ten-Tec website. This will allow you to hear Sing Side Band (SSB) on the Grundig 750. There are some YouTube videos showing this working well on some cheap SW radios.

  • @snowpuppy77 Thankyou very much !! You just saved me a lot of money.

  • WWV 2.5, 5, 10, 15 & 20MHz comes out of Fort Collins Colorado and has a male announcer and WWVH which has a female announcer comes out of Hawaii using the same exact frequencies. The other time station is C H U which broadcasts from Canada at the present time I can't remember the frequencies.

  • hi does that radio pick up cb bands

  • @bluejay148 Yes, it goes up to 27410khz.

  • i just got mine few days ago...to the ppl complaining about this radio, ...what did you expect for 100 dollars? i own a sony icf-2010 ...2 grundig yacht boy 400's and a radio shack dx-398 (sangean ats-909) and they cost me lot more than 100 dollars. Anyway,.. i really like this radio but i want to ask you cornej92 if the sensitivity drops out above 20 megs on yours like it does on mine. im only using rod antenna for time being.

  • I have one of these radio's under the Eton name. Its an ok radio but it has lots of images of stations showing up at numerous spots on the dial. Its hard to figure out what the correct frequency of the station is when its bleeding out all over the place. It also has problems with shortwave stations bleeding in on the AM band. Otherwise its a pretty good radio. but the analog tuning has a tendency to drift.

  • nurdafided.setup but it works

  • can they pick up police frequencies? lol.

  • that time station is WMV from fort collins colorado

  • I have tried everything from adjusting the bandwidth control to moving the pathetic antenna around, I even tried connecting a grounding wire, but nothing works at all.

The whole thing just turned into a $100 dollar piece of shit just days after it was purchased brand new from The Source by Circuit City, A VERY REPUTABLE RETAILER I MIGHT ADD!!

  • I got that some thing for my birthday, I asked for it, my mom bought it for me, and now i am deeply regretting it. The Mediumwave band or AM band is riddled with adjacent channel interference.

For example CFTR 680 News out of Toronto is overloaded by CFZM 740 out of Toronto. I am only located 14 miles west of Toronto. To be even more specific CFTR and CFZM are both Class A 50,000 watt stations. Everything was superb just days before I wrote this comment. DO NOT BUY THE GRUNDIG S350DL!!

  • Hey, you picked up 3 Chinese radio stations!!

  • How's the sound quality? I have a very old Grundig Majestic that runs on tubes, but it missing a few parts (mainyl speakers and an antenna) and it had a very good sound system.

  • the audio quality varies greatly upon signal strength but the audio quality is still good enough to listen to.

  • Thanks, can't wait to buy mine this week!

  • you are welcome.

  • hello there hey how can i listen to a shortwave frequicy from cambodia?

    thank you

  • IT.S THE ATOMIC CLOCK! Does not WWV come out of Ft. Collins, CO?

  • WWV does broadcast from Ft. Collins. Colorado. WWV broadcast audio tones, time in universal time, solar activity and marine weather. there is radio station WWVH from Hawaii that broadcast the same content as WWV and WWVL that can only be received by clocks that synchronize with the atomic clock.

  • Nice Radio! Is this a CCrane clone?WWV comes in on my old YB500 when attached to a poer supply.BTW,

CHU is Canada and 15 MHz ids WWV in Boulder(Fort Collins) Colorado. Thanks for posting,73's! Brainy

  • Spanish speaking numbers station on 7887mhz every day at 20:00UTC or 3:00 pm EST.

  • Hey. good setup. The station on 15 MHz is WWV fort colins, CO. USA.

  • Here is an ultimate test. can it pick up the

    Lincolnshire Poacher

  • The LP has been quiet for a year or so.

  • oh really i guess the damn spies left. Well that sucks do you know of anymore number station that would come in well on the east coast of the US.

  • Try looking for Cherry Ripe (various videos on youtube.) I think it can be heard in the states. Good Luck!

  • What does one of these cost?

  • What Type of wire did you use between the Alligator clips?

  • I think when you connect an external antenna it cancels out the telescoping antenna.

  • Hey very nice. Thanks for posting this!

  • My Radio Equipment

    YAESU FRG-8800 Shortwave Communications Receiver

Shortwave Antenna Alpha Delta DX-SWL Sloper 60 feet long wire 25 feet high

    73 KCØBRO

  • yes the one i looked over at rad shack did drift alittle ever the whole short wave

  • Hey Cornej92, can you do me a favor? I see you posted this a while back. If by chance you still have this receiver, is there any way you can post a vid of this piece being used in the evenings around the 6.100 - 6.900 area? TIA. Take care.

  • I noticed some drift towards the end and was wondering if it's usually like that, or if it was because you were using the rapid tuning dial. Any help would be great since I'm thinking about buying this radio.

  • I tried the G6, but traded it for this radio. It receives much better, and the AM is great.

  • Great, I'm glad you enjoy the S350DL

  • This radio has moderate drift problems. Some days it does well but every now and then it drifts off of frequency by a few khz (noticable difference).

  • Nice radio, but the video shows that drifting is a serious problem in this model, even on strong signals - any comments on that?

  • Agree, maybe not serious though. I'd say moderate.

  • Instead of putting up the slinky near the wall, try putting it near the window... better yet... (this is what I did when I lives in an apt.) ... put a sheet of aluminum foil across your bedroom's wall that faces the exterior. And attach the aligator... It isn't a pretty sight, but you can cover it with posters and such... You´ll get great reception. ... none of that Chinese shit

  • Sounds like a great idea and have heard success stories with doing this. It just doesn't sound like a sight I would like to wake up to every day. Ha!

  • Can you pick up ham bands with that thing?

  • 530khz-29mhz and FM radio band

  • Nice!WWV as you are recieving is Not from Canada! It is located in Fort Collins,Co.,USA!

CHU is in Ottawa,Ontario on 7865 Khz 24 hours.I have A Grundig YB500 as well as Sangean ATS818ACS(The Cassette Recorder one).I notice you tuned WYFR with Harold Camping. You're In Kentucky, while i'm in Tennessee!73's from Brainy

  • Correction, 15 khz comes out of Fort Collins, Colorado. I think its WWVB.

  • Thank you

  • excelent radio

  • Thank you for your comment

  • can you get bbc world service on that thing

  • Yes, I can

  • I love the retro look of this radio. I am looking into getting the Grundig 750 which has Single Side Band with it..

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Sideband is definitely a plus. I highly recommend a good radio with it.

  • Great video, I'll check on whether you've done more. Very nice radio, although I notice it must be single conversion, as a lot of the signals you were receiving were images from other bands. Not a big deal. I'd really like to hear a nice slow AM bandscan at night on this radio if the interference isn't too bad there. By the way, CHU Canada has moved their 7335 signal to 7850...

  • Is that radio available at Radio Shack?

I thought about getting one myself.

  • Yes it is. Priced around 100 dollars.

  • I bought this radio last week after some difficulty finding it; it is a popular radio that some Radio Shacks are sold out of.

I found the shortwave to be great day or night. But, I thought that a.m. reception is only mediocre at best, even at night. I think the folks at Grundig could improve on the ferrite bar antenna.

Overall, it is a decent radio for a hundred bucks.

    Thanks for your reply.

  • I have had a lot of success with DXing on the AM band. Solar Cycles and the ionosphere play a large role in your reception. When I first got the radio it had great RX on the AM band. Now with the solar cycle things aren't coming in nearly as good as they were.

  • @gubscout Thanks for your comment. I agree with you. It worked great for me for about a year but after that it began to wear down. Not sure why, it was kept at a good temperature and not exposed to the sun but it began having the same problems you are having. Not sure if there is anything you can do, maybe write to Radioshack or even Grundig explaining your problem.

  • You were picking up several mainland Chinese stations - most likely CRI or Voice of China. Cool!

  • Nice video, noticed some images showing up while you were tuning into the 14khz range coming in from 15khz. Also Harold Camping at around 11khz is probably an image that really is on 9895khz.

That's due to the single conversion this radio has.

I also noticed you had your bandwidth set to wide. That's good while searching around but when you want to listen to a broadcast, switch it to narrow. And no mistakening Harold Camping's voice....

Thanks again, nice sound to the radio,

  • Thanks for the info and tip. I never looked into that wide and narrow so now I know. Hope to make another video soon. Thanks.

    -Jesse

  • Cool. I will give the slinky-tenna a try on my S350. I also wish it had SSB. Since my Sony ICF-2010 died I hate not being able to understand the Donald Ducks! Can pick up lots of them on 80 meters here in NC.

  • I just bought it today. I'm in a hotel right now so I have a few thousand tons of concrete and steel over my head but hopefully when i get home i can manage to set something like this up. I'll let you know how it works out. Also, Do you use the Ground wire input?

  • I sometimes use the ground wire input for another form of antenna that I've rigged up. I have never actually grounded this radio but I have heard if you do reception is much better. I have also heard that if you just get a long piece of wire and run it away from teh radio it acts as a ground. What I used here is just the antenna jack and speaker wire. Nothing is grounded. Good luck with your new radio.

  • Receives well on the higher SW freqs also! I may look into buying one of these units. Will it receive ssb transmissions? Also, I like the way the Grundig is built.

15mhz is WWV in Fort Collins in Colorado. They have a great QSL card! I think that Canada also has a time/freq. standard also. I think the call is CHU. Last time i heard CHU, they were broadcasting on 7.335.0 Mhz. They have a good signal in Texas. CHU also sends out a great looking QSL card!

    73 es gud DX,

    John

  • I agree 15000 khz is Ft. Collins Colorado

They also broadcast there time signal on 2500khz

5000khz and 20000khz, CHU Canada broadcast on 3330khz and 7335khz. Any way Good Broadcast.

  • No, this unit does not do ssb which sucks. I pick up lots of ssb stations but of course they cannot be clarified. Thanks for the info on those stations. 73's back to ya!

  • What time of the day did you shoot this video?

  • 15hr18min UTC per WWV - it is recorded on the video :-)

And the WWV solar flux data reported on WWV was very clear. Nice antenna system, and NICE VIDEO CORNEJ92!

  • Great set up you've got there. Well done on the antenna set up.

  • great radio and nice set up

  • Thank you! I appreciate the positive comment.
