Thats an adjustable reflector , the light and the photo cell is is in the bigger housing between the pair of lanes. I had to readjust plenty of these after being kicked by angry league bowlers. Coke spilt in the old telescorers was'nt any fun either.
Away from the lanes, Holman was a pretty decent guy. ON the lanes, he was a jerk. His lack of sportsmanship was obvious when he kicked out the foul light. There is just no excuse for that wretched, childish display.
@DeedsResearcher Professional bowlers live challenging lives. They always need to stay focused when bowling. However, some people handle it worse than others. I had no idea anyone could kick the foul light! It seems so outrageous. The closest I saw to that were angry bowlers who slam their fists on the ball return. Some end up cursing afterwards. Pete Weber said "dammit" after leaving behind the 10 in the 2003 PBA open.
@MONOPOLY35 It is actually the housing where the foul light mechanism is located. Kick it hard enough, and it can fall apart.
When I was about 14 or 15 (a LONG TIME ago!), I saw another bowler kick the ball return when he missed a simple spare. His coach ran over to him and asked "Would you have kicked it if the ball return could kick back?" The kid had a very red face after that, but never again kicked a ball return! Good lesson.
@DeedsResearcher I beg to differ with you sir. Off the lanes he was an asshole too. A while back, my friend and his young son (8-9 yrs.old) went to a bowling center in south Jersey. The son asked if that was M.H. bowling down by the last few lanes. After walking down a bit, my friend said yes it is. His son asked to get his autograph, and dad said sure. When his son approached Holman and asked for his autograph, Holman said "Hey kid, I'm busy practicing". Holman was a disgrace to the sport.
@fullhouse41 As I said, "Away from the lanes, Holman was a pretty decent guy." If Holman was practicing, he was AT the lanes. He was concentrating on his practice session, and probably working out something in his delivery. He need not be in a tournament in order to be "at work", and for pro bowlers, any time they are on the lanes, they are at work. The PBA used to have rules, fining us for giving autographs while bowling a squad. GOOD RULE! They wanted us to focus on bowling our best.
weird to see nbc broadcasting a pba event, from my days in my stroller i remember watching abc's wide world of sports on saturday afternoons, with the soothing sound of chris schenkel narrating...
I used to watch the PBA when I was a child back in the late 70's and early 80's.....I always considered Holman to be a bit of a dick at times, but he certainly was good at the game.
@DTrainExpress Play-by-play guy was Sam Nover. You're right about Steve Neff. The 2 of them also did the 1980 Legends of Bowling together, the championship match of which is posted here on YouTube.
If you listen carefully as they get ready to toss to break, I think that's a re-arrangement of Jerry Goldsmith's theme to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" from the previous year. (It would later be re-arranged for The Next Generation as well, of course.)
As a kid I HATED watching Marshall Holman and wanted to lose every televised match he ever had...even though I had a bad temper myself that I didn't learn to get a handle on until I was about 16. lol
hehehe, marshall looks so calm now on TV as a commentator. this video, plus the one when he covered his ears during applause while bowling against his partner, Mark Roth, is funny to see.
I remember in times of anger I'd kick the bowling rack, smack the overhead ceiling, and the worst, punch out the glass in the overhead projector. I had a terrible temper as a kid.
Holman was always a punk. Totally classless. I watched all those matches when I was a kid and anyone else can watch his crappy attitude memorialized for all time on this and other videos.
He's still around. Holman is an idiot! My friend who was 12 yrs old at the time asked him for his autograph while he was practicing. Holman said, "Get the hell away from me, kid!" Eversince then, I've never liked him at all.
Wow, that was a pretty douchebag thing to do! Jeez, you would think a BOWLER would be thrilled to sign an autograph. I'm a league bowler, I follow the players and I don't miss a tournament on ESPN on Sundays but I mean, it's not like he's a world class athelete that he has to be such a freakin diva!
roth did the same thing to my brother.... no wonder they were paired up... and my brother was like 8 at the time. Rediculous. I hate mark roth, and now marshall holman as well :)
Marshall was given a "Commissioner Exemption" into this weeks 1/18/09 event in Oregon and finshhed in t63 Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore., 2,654, $1,800 ....weird how 33rd place thru 63rd place all pay $1,800
I've kicked the ball return before, but it's pointless, you only hurt yourself and bowl worse. Never kicked the foul light though. No offense to him, but he deserved the suspension.
The protest was because if Holman fouled...his pins should have been counted as a zero and instead of shooting for a 4 pin spare, he should have been shooting at a full set of 10 pins on his second shot.
i used to kick the machines too when i got frustrated. sometimes it was because i felt cheated; sometimes because i was looking for an external source to vent my anger for failing to perform. either way, i was a jackass for doing it; marshall holman is no exception.
whoa..... first time i've seen this- he didnt seem to kick it THAT hard..... and they wanted a protest- PLEASE! it was an exciting match nevertheless.....
He destroyed equipment, but why is this a *ten* week suspension?

I loved the personality Holman had when bowling. It was great to see the raw emotion, you know how much he always wanted to win.
Although there are better ways of showing it than kicking the foul light... tsk tsk.

Well, the part of the foul light he kicked was behind the line. So I guess he didn't technically foul.
