This is what happens when you throw the ball too hard - too much deflection. No drive, no five, even with the modern high octane super dynamic power core bowling balls of today. The game of bowling has become a joke in the last 15-20 years and so has the PBA.
@worldslayer Really? I'm incredibly knowledgeable about bowling. If Duke would have thrown the ball just a hair slower on that PARTICULAR SHOT, the ball would have gotten a bigger piece of the 5-pin (probably thrown it toward the 7-pin area). You obviously don't understand this and obviously didn't understand my previous comment. Duke's ball got a piece of the 5-pin, but not enough of it. When I say the modern game is a joke, I mean the scores are too high cuz the equipment is too good.
@worldslayer Also...the modern resin/particle bowling balls are a joke. They are responsible for the ridiculously high scores. For the last 15-20 years bowlers can hook the ball like Mark Roth and Marshall Holman and Wayne Webb did in their heyday - all they have to do is buy a $250.00 bowling ball the destroys the pins and hook out of the building. I've had twelve 300 games and you know what? I wish I had only one. One that was shot on long oil with a plastic ball.
@worldslayer Speaking of plastic balls....a couple years ago Wes Malott refused to bowl in the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship because he didn't want to be forced to use a plastic ball. He didn't want to use a plastic ball because he probably has never used one in his lifetime and they don't hook much. He said that his wrist and hand would take a beating when trying to execute shots with lift, turn, and hook. The guy is a big pussy. Bowling should go back to long oil/rubber/plastic balls
@worldslayer By the way, Duke's shot was a "paralyzer" shot, where the 5-pin moves toward the left, then a pin moves it back toward the right and it stands up. This shit is so common these days because the pin action is so fast because of the atomic bowling balls. Everything I've said are good reasons why, as I said in my initial comment, bowling has become a joke. Because bowling is a joke, the PBA has become a joke as well. $15,000 first place prizes. Eleven tournaments Now that's a joke.
@worldslayer I don't need to practice anymore. When I don't need to practice, the local bowling centers don't get my money. It's a downward spiral. That's why bowling is a dying sport. If I want to practice, it's all cosmic bowling and tons of distractions. Bowling centers now make most of their money from cosmic bowling because not many people practice anymore (they've got an atomic bowling ball, remember) and/or bowl on leagues.
@worldslayer The USBC is also a joke. They sanctioned TWO 900 series rolled by a 17-yr-old kid who PRE-BOWLED, which means he was by himself on a pair of lanes bowling three games because he couldn't bowl on his league night those weeks. He used modern equipment (of course). Let's see...he had the lanes to himself. He's up every 30 seconds instead of every 5 minutes. There weren't 9 other guys moving the oil around. And the USBC sanctions his 900s. To be continued...
@worldslayer The USBC sanctions this kid's PRE-BOWLED 900s, but they didn't sanction Glenn Allison's 900 from 1982 because of "blocked" or "illegal" lane conditions. Allison was 51 years old at the time and used a Columbia Yellow Dot plastic bowling ball and bowled on long oil, and IT WAS DURING LEAGUE PLAY. Nine other guys were moving the oil around. He was the first person in history to roll a 900 series. But they sanction this kid's TWO 900s that were pre-bowled. See? It's a JOKE.
@worldslayer Allison also bowled in another league that night prior to his 900 and had a 578 series. I think it would be wise for the USBC to hurry up and sanction Mr. Allison's 900 series. "Illegal" lane conditions? Give me a break. If anything should be classified as "illegal" in bowling, it's the modern atomic bowling balls with super mega dynamic power cores. These bowling balls of today should be outlawed.
@worldslayer The game of bowling has become so "soft" and high scoring. I'm all for going back to the days of rubber and plastic and long oil and let the best bowler win. Make the bowlers earn their hook and their high scores. People with releases like Roth, Holman, Webb, and Weber would have the advantage in the power department. If you don't have the release, learn it. Learn it and earn it. The industry should outlaw the modern equipment that has become the great equalizer.
the entry on his ball wasn't very sharp, it just didn't have enough hook on it because ideally the ball takes out the 1-3 pins and then the 5 but it was going too straight to hit the 5 lol
This really sucks for Norm... But it made great TV :D One day before league started, we were in our 10 minutes of practice and I threw my very first shot of the day; I hit the 1-3 pocket rather well and struck. Well, at least until the 2-pin that was in the left gutter slammed into the seven pin and stood up in its place ;)

i had a bad one too i had to shoot 280 to win my youth tournement and i went open strike, strike, etc until the tenth i threw it out a little to far and it came back like a train and i left the nine pin shot 250 for second in the tourney though cause a kid that averages 130 shot 300 my average was 177
i believe him. this 14 year old girl at our youth league shot a 290 scratch and ended up bowling a 380 with handicap.... she then rolled a 99 and a 112....
Hate to sound like a dick but ummmm I doubt you have had worse lol that 5 pin was a 100 grand 5 pin lol if duke carried that one and another he prob wins that tourney for 100k lol
Haha, Norm was playing up the 2 board, and he was doing it successfully! That's why he's such a great bowler, because he can dominate any playable part of the lane... Today in practice, I threw a few shots standing on the 11 board and throwing up 4... It isn't easy :D

"What do I have to do to get a strike?" I doubt that Duke was thinking that. He was probably thinking..."Wow, I threw that shot too hard and I was lucky to have my ball break enough to barely hit the headpin...that was a messy mixer that I almost had the luckiest strike of my life!" Yes, that's exactly what he was thinking. :-)
Darksideseem...you are right, I couldn't tell you a cheetah pattern from any other pattern. Sometimes "hit 'em light and make 'em fight" is the best method for various patterns. I was just making a light-hearted comment about what "The Duke" might have been thinking. I'm sure he thought his shot was good enough to carry, but I doubt that he was thinking "What do I have to do to get a strike." The comment was more about the announcer than about Norm. Norm Duke is incredible...one of the best ever
Face it, it was not a perfect shot !

what don't you guys like about this tournament?
SmooveLefty 6 months ago
Not only the ball hits the five, but the head pin taps it too off the wall. You can see the five pin move slightly when it shoots by.

It was probably a little off spot to begin with.

That was just a bad break. When they show the raplay you can clearly see that the ball does make contact with the 5 pin.
