I found it interesting that the geomancer said "don't smash the mirror" earlier because it could take your soul. But later he was like "say no to good luck, and smash the mirror." She said no for the wrong reason (didn't want the woman to have it), and doomed herself.

What might have broken the curse is her giving it up willingly, for free. But that wouldn't have given such an interesting (scary) ending.
