Best argument against tenure and overcommunistic teachers' unions. ;-) Teacher can't do the job, can that teacher, because someone who can do the job is waiting in the wings.
I listened to this song as a child and I totally understood it. I remember being sick with a high fever and heard this song and it absolutely brought tears to my eyes! My Mom explained it all to me so clearly and I never forgot what a fantastic lesson she had shown me!!!
This song is about the failings of the american school system. They emphasize normalcy and blandness, needing to make the "Special" (Retarded) children feel good.
@OctoberMountainGirl Don't discourage RiskyPack for sharing information that is possibly already understood by many, but encourage him for sharing information that is not understood by enough people.
This is not only about kid's creativity.. In my view this is a critical view of all social groups that try to exercise normative control to the individual. It happens everywhere if an authority tries to get rid of everything that is different. Look at governments, companies, subcultures, religions and so on
@RiskyPack i agree, but i think it has more to do with different people, such as people with disabilities, or monorities, people only seeings disabled people as "retards" and not seeing who they really are.
@BuMkRaKbOymoviemaka I agree with you.. But that is also a point of mine. People don't like difference, and having a different view on things is often frowned upon. I've grown up in a place where most people were behaving according to "the Law of Jante" where you should never try to be better than anyone else, or think your view is better.
Excellent, excellent, excellent! Thanks for making this. This song still rings true even after all these years. When will people learn not to kill a child's creativity?
Reminds me of public school systems today.

@Hellayapolitics2 Not where I went to school. LD students were made to feel grotesquely inferior for not being like everyone else.

And people around me when I was a kid wondered why I stuck my middle finger in the face of authority.

Would you happen to have an MP3 file for this specific version of the song?

@RiskyPack Almost all of Harry Chapin's music is a view of society. This isn't a new discovery.

This has always been one of my very favorite Harry Chapin songs. He was such a visionary...way ahead of his time I think.
