Erm, isn't the umpire suppose to stay behind the catcher 'till the pitch reaches the mit? Or is it just another piece of shit rule that no one follows?
Terrible....just terrible, he needs to attend ALOT of clinics. Although it is very charismatic, the game is not about the umpire. Seems like he is more interested in being a show off than getting the calls right. Terrible!!
ok once I had this japanese umpire that didnt know how to speak english or anything so before the game the coaches from either team didnt even meet up with him we just started to play the game. for a strike he would just grunt and a ball he wouldnt say anything. when he called someone out he would shout out something that nobody could understand and for safe he wouldnt say anything and just make the "safe" motion with his hands. it was so funny yet so confusing
i had an umpire like this!!! he would go HIGH IN THE SKY!! ball one! or once he got hit with a foul ball and cted like he was getting knocked out (cartoon)...HE WAS AWESOME!!! and he would insult players like..shorty is catching? then he comes up to bat and the ump goes OH SHORTY CAN HIT!!!! :D :D :D
im an umpire in miami fl and there is a few things wrong with this guy one is the shoes ALL umpires wear black shoes two is the way he calls balls buddy u can confuse the fans like that another thing is the bands on ur hands they got to go the last thing is when u call balls dnt point u can also confuse the score keeper u only do that with strikes
@Sonic8231 I am speaking from 20+ years of experience, and I am (along with every clinic I have been to) telling you it will get you in more trouble than it will keep you out of. They want to know where it missed, then the catcher can tell the coach with signs or between innings.
@ILOVEUMPS Well I personally love Norm. Umpiring isn't so black and white as you describe. Norm isn't trying to be a professional umpire. Obviously neither are you. Looks like he is having fun and good for the level he is at. All umpires should have this energy. But saying, "Ball, inside!" on close pitches has cut down on arguments I've had from the dugout. Maybe at your level it won't work, but at mine it definitely does.
@Sonic8231 Never said he was a bad guy. And when it comes to umpire mechanics, IT IS all black and white. That is why there are umpire clinics and that is why we have umpire mechanics manuals. There isn't a single clinic or manual out there that teaches or accepts giving the location of pitches like that. Nor is there one that lets umpires wear white shoes. I know this is little league, but more effort should be put into it than that!

He is not broadcasting a game. He should not be telling the location of the pitch. Just call it a ball or a strike. Somebody should be putting him in the direction of an umpire association to work with the guy on his mechanics. If the batter or catcher occasionally asks you where it missed etc, then you can tell him but not every pitch either. Most catchers are good like that.
NO ONE is teaching this - you NEVER signal for a ball, especially with your right hand. That is reserved for STRIKES. The umpire is not to comment on the location of a pitch that is a ball. If you think this is a good umpire, you are sadly mistaken. This is a joke.

Obviously if you go by mechanics he's a train wreck. But I've umpired with guys like that who don't do things the "right" way but call a good game. Sort of like the golfer Jim Furyk: You would never teach someone to swing the way he does, but it works for him and he's a great golfer.

I really only uploaded this video for my friends (I play baseball, they play softball. We happened to both have Norm ump our games). As crazy as this might sound, he is a -fantastic- umpire. One of the best I've ever had. Yes, his positioning is atrocious. Yes, he is moving as the pitch comes in. Yes, he does a lot of things wrong. But he is SO consistent and his zone is spot-on.
Anyway, just wanted to defend him. His antics are to be laughed at, not his skills as an ump.
If this is one of the best umpires you have ever had then I feel bad for you. I am also an umpire and am equally embarrassed. Among many of his problems, it is impossible to call any kind of adequate strike zone when moving with the pitch like that. There is a reason why umpires stand still and track only with your eyes...this stuff has been studied down to a science, there really is no debating it.
@rcmcknight Have you seen him in person? Have you been there to scrutinize his abilities? Trust me, I've played some of the highest levels of baseball in Canada, as well as playing my fair share of ball in the States, and he is one of the best I've had. He never misses a call. Is that so hard for you to accept? He is unique, that's for damn sure, but get over your insecurities and accept that fact that it's possible.
P.S. - He forgot his shin guards the day this was recorded. :)
@HouD Just getting the calls doesn't make a good umpire. 95% of a game calls itself. I don't want to call an umpire bad because no umpire is. They might lack mechanics or rule knowledge but that can be taught. Simply stating that Norm should change his umpiring a bit. If he fine tuned his mechanics he would be a much better umpire. Although he is a great umpire to you guys in higher levels of baseball a manager would eat him alive.

This may be an entertaining video which proves that 70+ thousand people still love a clown but it is not even a trace of a testament to a properly trained veteran amateur umpire. If Norm would apply an equal amount of talent to plumbing his work would rival that of the Three Stooges. Thanks for making the other 98% of umpires look better.

@HouD This clip ended up on am umpire forum where we all had a good laugh at it. He may have a decent zone but if he ever wants to be taken seriously he should think about attending a camp or clinic where they could teach him the finer points of calling a game.

I love how everyone posting here claims to be some "Official Umpire." Who gives a shit? It seems like hes having fun, the teams playing enjoy him being there, and seriously its a game..
Until I see one of you in some Major League game, calm the shit down.. really get a life because its not that serious...
I personally think the umpire is awesome, obviously everyone is having a blast with him around and ultimately that is what anyone could ever want from a game. Keep up the awesome work!

I'm glad you're happy with him, because just on this short video he called a pitch high that wasn't, and there's no way he can call the low strike consistently.
Gotta admire his enthusiasm, though.

As an umpire, I am embarrased that this guy calls himself an umpire. He is easily doing 20 things wrong and I have yet to see a batted ball.

I really only uploaded this video for my friends (I play baseball, they play softball. We happened to both have Norm ump our games). As crazy as this might sound, he is a -fantastic- umpire. One of the best I've ever had. Yes, his positioning is atrocious. Yes, he is moving as the pitch comes in. Yes, he does a lot of things wrong. But he is SO consistent and his zone is spot-on.
Anyway, just wanted to defend him. His antics are to be laughed at, not his skills as an ump.

If this is one of the best umpires you have ever had then I feel bad for you. I am also an umpire and am equally embarrassed. Among many of his problems, it is impossible to call any kind of adequate strike zone when moving with the pitch like that. There is a reason why umpires stand still and track only with your eyes...this stuff has been studied down to a science, there really is no debating it.

@rcmcknight Have you seen him in person? Have you been there to scrutinize his abilities? Trust me, I've played some of the highest levels of baseball in Canada, as well as playing my fair share of ball in the States, and he is one of the best I've had. He never misses a call. Is that so hard for you to accept? He is unique, that's for damn sure, but get over your insecurities and accept that fact that it's possible.
P.S. - He forgot his shin guards the day this was recorded. :)

@HouD Just getting the calls doesn't make a good umpire. 95% of a game calls itself. I don't want to call an umpire bad because no umpire is. They might lack mechanics or rule knowledge but that can be taught. Simply stating that Norm should change his umpiring a bit. If he fine tuned his mechanics he would be a much better umpire. Although he is a great umpire to you guys in higher levels of baseball a manager would eat him alive.

This may be an entertaining video which proves that 70+ thousand people still love a clown but it is not even a trace of a testament to a properly trained veteran amateur umpire. If Norm would apply an equal amount of talent to plumbing his work would rival that of the Three Stooges. Thanks for making the other 98% of umpires look better.

I have umpired for several years, and this guy is just having a good time. he isn't looking to go pro with it. he makes it more entertaining and emotional for the players and spectators. Being an umpire i can say that there are way too many douche bags like you that take it WAY too serious. Call a good game, and have fun. as long as the parents and players respect you, that's all that matters.

@HouD This clip ended up on am umpire forum where we all had a good laugh at it. He may have a decent zone but if he ever wants to be taken seriously he should think about attending a camp or clinic where they could teach him the finer points of calling a game.

@UmpMartin well you might be a stuck up umpire who hates to do his job, it looks like he is having more fun and every seems to love him so good for that community and if u keep a good zone the game moves along faster so im defending this guy and i know he wont move up to anything serious but for these kids its good to see an umpire like this
